Young Archaeologists Seeking More Opportunities in Kent
Young Archaeologists’ Club (YAC) are a very active group with a large membership of children and young people of all ages, united by a genuine passion for archaeology and history. Several of our members are currently working towards their BAJR passports, helping them prepare for future university study or apprenticeships in archaeology.

Over the years, we have had the privilege of excavating with a number of groups, and we are grateful to those who have supported and recommended us. However, despite this, it remains difficult to find local groups willing to welcome young people onto sites in a meaningful way.
Our group is fully equipped to take part safely and professionally. We are covered by our own CBA-issued insurance, bring our own equipment, and are led by qualified archaeologists. These young people are not simply “children looking for something to do”, they are the archaeologists, conservationists, and future members of Kent’s local archaeology groups.
Too often, young participants are overlooked or only offered limited roles, rather than being given the chance to contribute properly. This is a real shame, especially when their enthusiasm, commitment, and interest in the past is so clear.
Last year, we were delighted to work with the National Trust, and we have been invited back to help at Bodiam again this year. This is a wonderful opportunity for the children, but it also highlights the lack of similar support and opportunities available more locally.
We would be very pleased to hear from any local groups who feel they may be able to help by hosting a session or offering opportunities for our young archaeologists to get involved.
