Social Media Update
[pg40]The Kent Archaeological Society (KAS) has undergone a few changes in our social media usage since the last edition of the magazine. Previously the society utilised popular platforms Facebook, Twitter (now X), Instagram, and LinkedIn.
KAS on Bluesky
However, as many of you may know there has been a dramatic exodus of historians, archaeologists, academics, scientists, and museum professionals from X since both Elon Musk’s purchase of the platform and Donal Trump’s election to a 2nd term of office. The reason many have given for leaving X is that it no longer felt like a platform that was designed for and supportive of engaged discussions. Many of those leaving X have ventured over to Bluesky, an open-source social media platform designed by the former owner and creator of Twitter. After much deliberation and keeping an eye on Bluesky, the decision was made to create a KAS account. In the brief time we’ve been on the platform, the society is already nearing 200 followers and has reached people from the UK, Europe and further afield. It is hoped that by using this platform we can continue to build the society’s presence in the heritage field.

TikTok Analytics
The society has also ventured into the short-form video creation world of TikTok to accompany our social media suite and YouTube Videos. Since establishing our channel in July 2024, shortly after attending the Kent County Show, the society has already gained 351 followers, 870 likes, and over 27,000 post views! We are always keen to hear ideas of videos you’d like to see from the team, so do get in touch with myself via email with your suggestions.

The society will continue to utilise all of the social media platforms at our disposal to not only increase our engagement with members and the public, but also to build relationships with partner organisations for the benefit of the county’s archaeology.
