The Monumental Inscriptions

in the Church & Churchyard of High Halden

 

Taken in the Summer of 1894 by Wynford B. Grimaldi of Hathewolden & printed in January 1895 by W. Thomson, printed, of Tenterden.

 

Noted from a copy lent to me by the Rev. B.W. Gilpin, rector, in 1916. Missing numbers are those of footstones. The inscriptions may be taken to be headstones unless otherwise stated.

Tablets in the church of the Lord's Prayer &c were presented by Mrs Louisa Kolle Grimaldi of Hathewolden to the Parish Church of High Halden in memory of her father James Soames, Esq., J.P. of Maze Hill, Greenwich, November, 1894.

12.       Sarah Marshall wife of Tho. Marshall daughter of Jacob Turner of Smarden died 10 May 1683. Left 2 sons & 6 daughters. Aged 32 years. Also Mariah Marshall second wife of Thos. Marshall Gent died 17 July 1736 aged 77.

13.       Mrs Jane Simmons widow of Wm. Simmons, gent. by whom she had 2 sons Stephen & Richard, and 2 daughters Elizabeth and Jane, who all died as infants. Stephen the eldest lieth interred near this place, she departed this life 17 January 1695 in 24th year.

 

14.       Joseph Gorham died 18 January 1702 aged about 44 years.

 

15.       John Paull & Ann his wife. He died 14 April 1706 aged 80. She died 30 April 1682 aged 40. Issue 2 sons & 2 daughters. One son & 2 daughters survive viz..... Susan & Mary.

21.       Robert Sampson of this Parish, carpenter, died January 3 1726 in 57th year. Left issue one daughter, Mary. Also Hannah wife of John Poune & former wife of Robert Sampson died 12 October  1749 aged 64.

24.       Wm. Hyland late of this Parish, carpenter and millwright, died 13 November 1732 aged 77. Also Susannah his wife who died 18 March 1778 aged 81. He had issue 9 children.

 

27.       Thomas Marshall, gent. died 12 February 1734 aged 60.

 

28.       Mary wife of Richard Waterman died 19 November 1744 aged 28. Also 4 of their children.

74.       Thomas Taylor late of this Parish died 21 November 1791 aged 88. Also Sarah his wife died 27 December 1794 aged 86 and lies buried at Tenterden. Their issue Mary, Sarah, Stephen, Thomas, John, William, Richard and Nathaniel.

 

77.       David Meadhurst late of this Parish died 8 December 1791 in his 71st year.

 

79.       Thomas Lindridge of this Parish died 1 January 1792 aged 65. Also Susannah his wife died 2 December 1785 aged 59. Issue John, Susannah, Thomas, William, Edward and Joseph.

 

82.       Francis Phillips late of this Parish died 28 January 1793 aged 41. Erected by Elizabeth his wife.

 

84.       Joseph Drawbridge died 5 June 1793 aged 77. Elizabeth wife of Joseph Drawbridge of Cranbrook died May 7 1751 aged 32. She left issue one daughter Hannah who survived her 5 months.

 

85.       A vault built by Thomas Farrance in the year 1795 who died 14 October 1810 aged 60.

Also Wm. Farrance died 2 November 1853 aged 72.

Also Susan Farrance died 15 April 1856 aged 54.

Also Wm. Farrance died at Bishopsden Farm, Benenden, August 27 1868 aged 64.

101.    John Davis son of John & Mary Davis of Woodchurch died 18 December 1814 aged 4 years & 15 days. Also Mary Davis their daughter died 31 August 1819 aged 11 years & 4 months.

124.    John Jennings late of the City of Canterbury, gent. died 9 November 1822 aged 26. Son of John & Sarah Jennings whose remains are interred in St. Margaret's Churchyard in that City. To the North are interred the remains of James Jennings late of this Parish, schoolmaster, who died 3 July 1792 in his 48th year. Also of Ann his wife who died 19 March 1805 in her 66th year. Left issue one son James.

 

126.    Ann wife of Charles Coleman died 9 June 1824 in her 50th year. Also above Charles Coleman died 11 October 1841 in his 71st year. Also 3 children who died in infancy.

 

128.    Elizabeth wife of Wm. Foster died 17 July 1825 aged 75. Also Wm. their son died 19 March 1852 aged 77. Also Elizabeth his wife died 6 March 1851 aged 77. In memory of Wm. Foster of this Place died 27 May 1817 aged 68. Had issue by Elizabeth his wife 13 children 5 of whom are buried near this place & 8 survive.

 

129.    Ann Medhurst relict of Thomas Medhurst late of this Parish, gent. died 31 July 1825 aged 75. Also of James son of Thos. & Ann Medhurst died 20 April 1862 aged 80.

135.    John Lengley late of Smarden died 5 October 1826 aged 72. Left John, William, James, George, Peggy, Mary & Elizabeth. Also Peggy his wife died 20 April 1840 aged 72.

Also of John son of above John Pearson died 22 August 1864 aged 73. Also Sophia his wife died 28 August 1863 aged 71. Leaving issue John, Thomas, Mary and George. Mary died 16 April 1842 aged 20.

 

150.    Peter Pearson died 18 July 1834 aged 28. Erected by his widow. Left issue 1 daughter - Ann.

 

152.    Jane, daughter of James & Jane Brissenden of this Parish died 29 July 1834 aged 19. Elizabeth her sister died 23 October 1829 aged 7 and 2 brothers who died in infancy. Also James their brother died 29 May 1881 aged 39.

 

155.    Richard Waterman of this Parish, yeoman, died 25 November 1834 aged 82. Mary his wife died 24 July 1839 aged 83. Left issue by Mary his wife John, Mary, Young and James.

 

158.    James Russell died 3 April 1836 aged 38. Also Elizabeth Jane Russell Tyler daughter of above died 26 October 1838 aged 5 years and 8 months.

164.    Wm. Evenden of the Parish of Tenterden died 30 November 1841 aged 60. Left 1 son and 3 daughters - William, Elizabeth, Hannah and Rachel. Also of one son and 2 daughters deceased, William, Mary and Rachel.

William died 23 February 1819 aged 1 year and 7 months.

Rachel died 1 June 1820 aged 6 days.

Mary died 29 September 1826 aged 15 years.

William Evenden junior died 29 January 1838 aged 33.

 

165.    Richard Hopper died 1 September 1842 aged 40.

Lieut. & Adjt. T.J. Parker 218th The Royal Regiment died at Newry  in Ireland on 26 January 1843 aged 33 years. Erected by his brother officers - sympathizing with his family - have placed this tribute &c in the church of High Halden.

 

167.    Jane widow of Wm. Birch of this Parish died 8 January 1845 aged 51. Left 2 sons and 5 daughters - Allen, Jane, Elizabeth, Sarah, Ann, Emily and William. Also 2 children who died in infancy - Wm. aged 3 weeks, Rachel aged 7 weeks.

 

169.         Margaret wife of Wm. Boots of this Parish died 1 April 1845 aged 79. Also Wm. Boots died 4 June 1860 aged 86. And Charlotte fourth daughter of the above and wife of Peter Dowell died 28 October 1837 aged 33.

203.    Henry Oliver of this Parish died 14 June 1858 aged 89 and Elizabeth his first wife died in the year 1796 and lies buried in the North East corner of this churchyard. Leaving issue 1 son, Thomas now surviving. Also Elizabeth second wife of the above who died 21 June 1857 aged 78. Who had issue 4 sons & 3 daughters, Henry, Elizabeth, James, Elizabeth, Frederick, Purfield and Caroline, of whom Henry, James & Caroline now survive.

Frederick their son died 7 November 1847 aged 6 years and 11 months. William their son died 22 July 1866 aged 34.

 

214.    Mary Jane second wife of Thomas Pearson, miller, and eldest daughter of Henry & Mary Oliver died 26 February 1859 aged 28. Left 1 son and 2 daughters, Emily, Mary Jane and John.

 

216.    Elizabeth Morris died iv March MDCCCLIX aged xlvii years.

 

217.    Mr John Collins late of this Parish, Grazier, formerly of Tenterden died 28 May 1859 aged 78 leaving John his only child surviving. Also Mary his wife who died on 3 May 1841 aged 50 and was buried at Tenterden. Also Ann their daughter wife of Edward Russell died in this Parish 29 May 1847 aged 28.

 

220.    Peregrine Charles Baillie Hamilton late Captain 1st Rifle Brigade died 20 February 1860 in 37 year and whose mortal remains are buried beneath this stone.

 

221.    Robert Dering (late of Boars Isle) died 13 March 1861 aged 75. Left surviving one son Henry. Also Mary his wife who died 7 December 1861 aged 71.

 

222.    Emily Burch daughter of Wm. and Jane Burch died 26 January 1862 aged 31.

 

224.    A stone sarcophagus.

Ann wife of John Tickner of this Parish died 8 October 1862 aged 66. John Tickner died 12 December 1870 aged 75.

226.    Sarah wife of Sion Waterman of this Parish died at the London Surgical Home of a Fibrous Tumour 9 August 1865 aged 30.

 

228.    Elizabeth wife of Wm. Tyler died 20 January 1866 aged 36. Left 1 son and 4 daughters, Ann, Alice, Emma, William and Adelaid.

 

230.    Elizabeth Oliver second daughter of Henry and Mary Oliver of this Parish died 5 March 1867 aged 32.

241.    William Burch of this Parish, farmer, died 13 January 1872 aged 84. Left surviving 2 sons and 1 daughter, Allen, Ann & William.

Also Elizabeth Anne wife of Charles Oliver and eldest daughter of the above died 9 March 1867 aged 33. Left surviving Mary Parton, Jane Mannering, John and Eliza.

 

248.    George Russell, of Yalding, accidentally killed 10 September 1873 aged 26.

 

249.    Thomas Kirkbank died 2 October 1873 aged 82. Mary Ann his wife died 30 April 1872 aged 64. Also Sophronia Arabella Kirkbank died 30 April 1869 aged 22. Also William Burt Kirkbank died 8 September 1840 aged 4 years. Also Sylvester Albrina Kirkbank died in her infancy.

 

250.    William Wilkinson of this Parish died 21 March 1874 aged 83. Fanny Wilkinson wife of the above died 16 March 1875 aged 82

258.    Francis Matthew Gaugè died 18 March 1876 aged 73. Ellen Sarah his wife died 5 March 1850 buried in Kensall Green Cemetery. [London]

 

259.    Wm. Luxford, farmer, of this Parish died 25 December 1876 aged 77. Mary his wife died 25 June 1880 aged 80. Left surviving 5 sons and 4 daughters - Henry, Ann, Alfred, Sarah, Edward, Mary, Flora, William, Elizabeth and Eli. [sic - 5 daughters listed.]

 

261.    George Davis of this Parish died at Great Chart, July 21 1877 aged 91. Mary Ann his wife died 17 November 1852 after two years suffering aged 54. Left surviving 4 sons and 4 daughters.

264.    Elizabeth Luxford 4th Daughter of Wm. & Mary Luxford died 4 August 1877 aged 39. Also Wm. Luxford Late of this Parish 4th son of Wm. & Mary Luxford died at Wanganui, New Zealand, 17 November 1877 aged 41. 

 

267.    Roderic McLeod, Esq. died 6 January 1879 aged 71. Elizabeth Foster McLeod wife of the above died 17 November 1873 aged 71.

282.    Mary wife of Samuel Packham of Northiam, Sussex, (formerly wife of Thos. Cook of this parish) died 12 January 1885 aged 98 years and 11 months. Also Thomas Cook died 9 September 1827 aged 46. George their son died 9 August 1832 aged 15 years.

288.    Anne Betts wife of Wm. Mummery born at High Halden 8 January 1813 died at Ospringe 9 February 1886.
