Monumental Inscriptions with concise wills of Gravesend & Milton Cemetery
Monumental Inscriptions of Gravesend & Milton Cemetery with concise wills from the first two decades 1839-1859. Recorded by David Edward Williams, 15th June 2025.
The Chapel from the North West, (formerly the Pleasure Gardens tea room), showing the curved roads of those gardens. Note the headstones in multiple orientations.
Introduction
The original area of the Cemetery, from the Main Entrance to the Catacombs, was originally laid out in in 1834 as the Victoria Gardens, named after Princess Victoria, it was intended as a Pleasure Garden and as a rival to the nearby Rosherville Gardens. But it was not a success and after a short time, in 1837, it was decided to convert it into a cemetery, which were becoming a better business prospect due to over crowded and unhealthy churchyards, notoriously so in London.
Looking North from the Chapel to the Gate House.
The architect of Highgate Cemetery, Stephen Geary, was commissioned to design the monumental gate house and convert the tea room into chapels, one for the Church of England and one for Non Conformists. Features of the the Pleasure Gardens still exist in the form of curved roads and two circular mounds, which I suspect had a central speciman tree planted on them. It remained in private hands until 1905 when it was taken over by Gravesend Corporation, it is now closed for further burials.
The monumental Gate House from the North East.
The earliest graves are concentrated to the west and north west with others close to the curved road east of the chapel. There is a mixture of orientations depending on one's adherence to the established church or the non conformist alternatives, the row facing the west side of the catacombs are orientated north south, the non conformist tendancy.
One of the two Mounds of the original Pleasure Gardens, this the Western one, perhaps originally planted with a tree to provide shade ? Again, note the variable orientation of the graves.
As usual, in the period covered, the monuments tend to reflect the better off section of society and the majority lie in unmarked graves, since the cemetery was not enlarged, to the south, until 1926, I imagine that most of the common graves have many layers of people in them. The catacombs were not very popular, although they continue to receive burial into the 20th centuay, the total estimate is about 500 bodies but there are no monuments of the walls of the surviving western structure, although there are a few later headstone on top of it. My thanks to Jacob Scott of the Kent Archaeological Society for making it possible for this and other of my works to appear on the Society's website.

Mary Christie, Widow, Clarence Place, Milton.
She revokes her previous will because of the circumstances in which her eldest son William, has been placed compared to his brothers and sisters. She leaves him the greater part of the money which her late husband had left her.
Her 3 younger sons, Charles, John and Robert have good appointments and her daughters, Hannah, Mary and Kitty, “are handsomely provided for”, while William has only an equal share with his younger brothers and no appointment and considerable expenditure relating to his profession.
So, the money now held by her trustees shall, at her death, be solely his, except for £50 each for her other children, so William will be in a better position than he is now.
Witnesses: Anne Mc Gowan, Barnaby John Stuckley Bartlett, 3 Lacey Terrace, Milton.
Affidavit 27th March 1846
Anne Mc Gowan of Brompton Row, Brompton, Middlesex, Spinster, states, on oath, that she is one of the witnesses of Mrs Christie's will. She signed the will at the same time as the other witness in the presence of Mrs Christie after she signed the will in their presence.

* The Grand Duke of Russia.
This reference, in which Culmer only mentions the Grand Duke, may refer to the Grand Duke's unannounced visit to Queen Victoria in 1839, before her marriage to Prince Albert, the following year, 1840.
The Grand Duke was Alexander, who became Czar in 1855 as Alexander ll, around the time of the Crimea War. He was assassinated in 1881.
To put this into the context of the day, Russia was extremely unpopular in Britain due to the strong public support of Poland and it's struggle for independence from the Russian Empire, to which it was shackled. These feelings, (which are echoed today !), found a strong voice in Punch magazine, which had it's say on the visit to England of Czar Nicholas in 1844.
Punch urged Englishmen to be polite and welcoming, offering the guest, “a politeness so frigid that the autocrat shall consider himself in Siberia”
“He shall be dropping his money, snuff boxes, broaches, orders and whatnot wherever he goes. Money costs him nothing, remember, he can afford to lavish it , Friends, Countrymen, swear with Punch to carry every shilling the man leaves, to the Polish Fund. Remember what is the hand that offers these honours. Don't touch his money. Hand it over to Lord Dudley Stuart”*
* Lord Dudley Stuart was Vice President of the Literary Association of the Friends of Poland and widely recognised as one of the most dedicated supporter of the cause of Poland and Polish refugees in Britain.
When Culmer was an active Thames pilot, he must have taken the Grand Duke's ship safely to Woolwich, where the Duke landed. He doesn't seem to have been embarrassed by the gift, no doubt, not a Punch reader and probably not that aware of European affairs, although the outbreak of the Crimean War, not that many years after the visit, should have lead him to think again about the gift ?

Proved 17th April 1855 Administration granted to Ellen Dalrymple, his widow. Tebbits and Stone have renounced administration.
Note in Margin: 19th February 1879. Administration granted to Ellen Louisa Wilhelm[ina] ? Dalrymple, Spinster, the daughter. If the will was not administered by the widow, it is nor mentioned.
According to a brief note in Ancestry, George was the son of Sir William and Louisa Dalrymple, born in 1820 in Sevenoaks. But Sir William does not mention George among his children in his will, proved in 1849. Sir William appears to have a military background and among his bequest is an history of the Peninsula War, the name Teixiera is of Portugese and Gallician origin, meaning Yew Tree, (Taxus).

who departed this Life
7th December 1851
Aged 58 Years
George Gahan had an interesting and varied career. He did not rise to a high rank but it seems he was of a class of officers who formed the backbone of the service.
The Navy Biographical Dictionary, 1843, tells us that he came from an Irish family “of very ancient descent”, which was allied to “many of the Nobility of the present day”.
His father was a naval officer who served at the Battle of Cape St. Vincent,1780. His paternal grandfather was an army officer who saw action at the Battle of Dettingen, 1743.
Gahan entered the Royal Navy in 1805 as a Midshipman and served on the Scilly Isles guardship H.M.S. Hornet.
In 1807 he served on H.M.S. Salvador Del Mundo, flagship of Admiral Young; this was a Spanish ship captured by the Royal Navy.
In 1809 he served on the sloop, H.M.S. Jalouse, ( a captured French ship), in the capture of Le Charles, a French privateer. At this period he was also engaged in escorting conveys to the West Indies.
In 1814 he served on H.M.S Childers and in September of that year took part in the unsuccessful attack on Fort Bowyer at Mobile, Alabama, during the war following America's failed attempt to seize Canada.
In 1815 he was, at long last, promoted to Lieutenant, one wonders, was he such an able person that commanders of ships he served in did not want to lose him if he was recommended for promotion ?
In 1815 he was on H.M.S. Pique, (captured French ship), at Plymouth. After this time he joined the Coast Guard blockade, serving on H. M. S. Talavere, 74 guns. After the defeat of Napoleon, he transferred to the Coast Guard. In 1830 he was injured due to “his zeal, activity and perseverance suppressing smuggling” . In 1832 he had to resign on health grounds, spending 9 months in a Naval hospital.
But, in that year, he was soon back to his duties, commanding H. M. S. Dove, a revenue vessel. He continued to serve in the Coast Guard service until he retired.
During his career he was awarded the Royal Humane Society's Silver Medal for saving the lives of 3 men during a storm off the coast of Norfolk.
George Gahan married his cousin, Elizabeth Gahan, in 1819, they had one daughter.
After her death, he married Honor Cole, in 1838. She was daughter of William Cornish, Esquire, Magistrate and Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall. Her great uncle was Captain Sir Charles Cole, R. N. and she was sister in law of Lieutenant James Clayton, R. N.
The couple had 3 children. By the time of the 1851 Census, they were living in Brunswick Road, Milton but at the time of his death later that year, they were living at Perry Street, Northfleet.
George Gahan was now retired from the Royal Navy, on half pay and also a pensioner of the Coast Guard. His wife Honor was 30, his daughter from his first marriage, Helen, was 27, son William was 9, son Daniel was 1 and daughter Honoria was only 2 months; they had one servant living with them. George Gahan's death was obviously a terrible blow to Honor but she would have been cushioned by her familial connections, from the harsh treatment handed out to the less fortunate in those hard times.

William Kingham of Gravesend, Gentleman.
All his real and personal estate to his wife Elizabeth, absolutely. He appoints her his sole executor.
Witnesses” John Allingham John Jensen
Proved 24th April 1857
In the 1851 Census, William Kingham describes himself as a retired Varnish Maker, born in Marylebone.
William Kingham was a craftsman specialising in coach varnishing. In 1821, probably not long after his apprenticeship ended, he founded his own company at 37 Barbican, City of London. In 1840 he took on John Jensen as his partner. The Barbican site produced high quality varnishes and Japan black.
In 1848 Jensen took over the business, this must be the time that Kingham retired, note that Jensen was one of the witnesses of Kingham's will.
In 1856 Jensen went into partnership with Wilfred Nicholson and they were a legal entity by 1861, the business moved, first to the King's Cross area and finally to Stratford.
Later the business merged with John Hall & Sons of Bristol.
In 1874 Jensen retired. The company was still know as Jensen and Nicholson into the 20th century. By this time they had moved from carriages to motor cars and domestic appliances, producing enamels under the trade name Robbialac. In 1958 the company became owners of Cuprinol wood preservatives. In 1960 the company merged with Lewis Berger & Sons and was known as Berger, Jensen and Nicholson.
After more mergers the company became part of Crown paints, which in turn became part of Akzo Nobel.

In 1808, during the Peninsula War against Napoleon, a force of Royal Marines, Royal Navy sailors and Spanish irregulars, under the command of Lord Cochrane, defended the Castell de la Trinidad at Rosas on the North East coast of Spain,( the Costa Brava), against the French and Italians.
Previously, Major Pattoun and the garrison at Citadel of Rosas, had been forced to retire from their position by superior numbers of the enemy, to Fort Trinidad. Major Pattoun and his marines had to enter the fort by means of a rope ladder while under heavy fire.
After the Indian Mutiny broke out, Major Pattoun's son, Lieutenant William Henry Wilson Pattoun, was one of the men of the 61st Foot (South Gloucester Regiment) who took part in the capture of Delhih, after marching 250 miles in high temperatures.
Delhi fell on the 19th September 1857 and Pattoun died nearly 2 months after the city fell, he seems to have suffered a severe ankle wound, so I wonder if an infection caused his death ?

The other one died in 1847 in Dalston, a “Gentleman”, his wife was not a Sarah.
