Survey at Hope All Saints

PDF

(by kind permission of the farmer, Mr Peter Waddell)

Last year a full survey of the remaining standing fabric of this church was undertaken, and interior and exterior elevations drawn at a 1:10 scale.

This year a ground plan of the church, so far as it was visible, was drawn and the various elements of the building were phased. Using the evidence on the ground and also old plans, photographs, drawings and antiquarian reports, an attempt was made to define the sequence and dating of the structure. It was found, however, that the documentary evidence was often faulty and contradictory.

Fallen worked stones with architectural details which can assist with dating, have been recorded by photography and scale drawings.

Some survey work remains to be completed on the surrounding earthworks and the visit of an ecclesiastical petrologist from University College, London, is expected to help in the identification, and perhaps provenance, of exotic foreign stone in the fabric.
