16th and 17th century evolution of Broomhill and Camber
This research has continued from last year. 1570 was certainly a year of a great sea flood. Although no detailed information has yet come to light about the rupture of the sea bank or wall south of Broomhill Church, it is clear from records of Walland Marsh stored at Lydd, that Symonds Wall at the north end of the Midrips was breached in October or November. It took a year to repair that breach. Conditions seem to have been very similar to those in the last week of February 1990, when a westerly gale and a surge at this end of the Channel coincided with one of the highest spring tides of the year.
