Archaeology Research Group - 19th January 2026

The Archaeology Research Group met on 19 January 2026 to review ongoing projects, plan future events and discuss grant funding, youth engagement and fieldwork activities.

The Group confirmed plans for a practical archaeological recording forum on 21 March 2026, focusing on excavation recording techniques, with the event expected to take place at Lenham Community Centre (subject to venue confirmation). Planning also continued for the 2026 annual conference, which is proposed to focus on the archaeology of south and south-east Kent, alongside discussions on a future metal detecting and archaeology event.

Members received an update on the Group's annual grant budget and considered current grant applications, including support for archaeological geophysical survey work at Dereby Court. Discussions also covered future funding priorities and budget management.

Updates were provided on youth engagement initiatives, including activities undertaken by the Young Archaeologists' Clubs and opportunities to develop training and skills for young people through future projects.

Fieldwork updates included progress at the Lees Court Estate, where analysis of significant Early Neolithic pottery continues alongside preparations for further excavation later in the year. Members also received updates on the Mote Park Big Dig, the proposed Kent archaeological sites guide and the Kent Downs Heritage at Risk programme.

The meeting concluded with a review of ongoing actions, including conference recordings, event budgeting and venue arrangements, with the next meeting scheduled for late spring/early summer 2026.
