The Ian Coulson Bursary Award 2025

PDF

Huge congratulations to St. Edmund’s School, Canterbury, who have been awarded the 2025 Ian Coulson Bursary.

This annual bursary has been established by the Kent Archaeological Society in memory of Ian Coulson — Adviser for History in Kent schools for over 25 years and a former President of the Society.

The bursary aims to develop classroom resources based on Kent’s local history and/or archaeology, two of Ian’s great passions, to support the teaching and learning of these subjects in Kent and Medway schools.

The project “Unlocking the Past to Shape the Future: Investigating Pupils’ Lives at St. Edmund’s School, Canterbury, from 1749–2025” will explore past and present voices of St. Edmund’s by inviting local primary and secondary schools to develop key research skills using the school’s extensive archives and surrounding heritage centres.

Pupils will connect with voices from the past to gain a deeper understanding of how local and national history can come alive, and will learn invaluable, cross-curricular research skills throughout the project.

A suite of teaching resources will be created and made freely available upon completion.

We will keep readers updated on the success and outcomes of the project as they progress.

Congratulations to all involved!
