Steve looks at the lives and actions of eleven Parisian women in the shocking new reality of the German occupation of Paris in June 1940. After 1.5 million French men were made prisoners of war, women (still without a vote) became a big majority of Parisians. Josephine Baker, Coco Chanel, Edith Piaf and Suzanne Spaak were among the best known women, and the others whose stories are told include a dentist, a nun, a town hall clerk, a museum archivist, a Romanian Jewish-origin immigrant, the wife of a Jewish man and an angry teenager. Who was a ‘traitor’ and who a ‘faithful’? What did these terms even mean 85 years ago? Who turned a blind eye and who did the right thing?
