How did it come to this? Turner’s "The Fighting Temeraire"

  • Smarden Charter Hall, Chessenden Ln, Smarden, Ashford TN27 8NF Smarden, England, TN27 8NF United Kingdom (map)

A talk by Alex Ferris, hosted by Smarden Local History Society.

Are you an Art lover or History enthusiast? Then this is one for you.

Our next talk “How did it come to this?” is this Thursday when I will be talking about William Turner’s glorious masterpiece depicting HMS Temeraire, veteran of The Battle of Trafalgar, being towed to the breaker’s yard.

I’ll be exploring why the painting and the old battleship itself, stirred some good and some not so good emotions, and why the order Nelson gave to the Temeraire just as the battle began probably cost him his life.

We hope you will join us on Thursday at the usual time of 6:45 pm at The Charter Hall. The talk will start at 7:30 pm and guests are, as always, very welcome.
