KAS Annual Fieldwork Forum: An archaeologists' practical guide to site recording

The ARG are pleased to present our annual fieldwork forum, this year taking place at Lenham Community Centre on Saturday 21st March. The forum this year is focused on the practical process of on-site recording and is open to KAS members and non-members alike.

(Tickets £10 for KAS members and £15 for non-members)

 The Archaeology Research Group (ARG) is pleased to host its annual Fieldwork Forum on Saturday 21st March 2026. The event this year will be aimed local archaeologists in need of guidance and information concerning best practice in site recording. There will be a chance for attendees to undertake an indoor practical lesson on section drawing*.

Programme

10am – Arrival and registration

10.20am – 10.30am – Introduction, Keith Parfitt

10.30am – 11.00am – Archaeological Stratigraphy or Digging in layers, Keith Parfitt 

11.00am – 11.30am – Context, Context, Context (title not fixed), Ann Isenberg

11.30 – 11.45am –  Tea Break

11.45– 12.15 – Surveying and planning your site, Dr Paul Wilkinson    

12.15 – 12.45 – GPS/GNSS, recording your site to the national grid, Andy Ward

12.45 – 13.45 – Lunch (Please make your own arrangements)

13.45 – 15.15 – The use of sections and how to draw them 

                           (including an indoor practical drawing session), Keith Parfitt

15.15 –15.30 – Tea Break

15.30 – 16.00 - General site photography, Andy Ward

16.00 – 16.30 – Photogrammetry; a 21st century recording method, Jacob Scott

16.30 – 16.45 – Concluding remarks and Forum closes

*Attendees will need to bring a sharp pencil (HB), an eraser and 30cm metric ruler. Graph paper will be provided and you may keep your drawing for future reference.

Transport: Free car parking at venue. Lenham Station is a 20-minute walk away. Stagecoach 510 bus service between Maidstone and Ashford stops at Lenham
