Late Roman Knife Handle found at Bifrons Anglo-Saxon cemetery

A lovely late Roman Knife Handle found at Bifrons Anglo-Saxon cemetery and part of the Kent Archaeological Society Collection held at Maidstone Museums.

Hunting motifs such as this one are a common site throughout the Roman Empire! These knives are typically 60-75 mm long and 10-20 mm wide. Studies have looked at the style of depiction for both the hare and the hound, and this example is typical of style 2.1.1 (Arched Back) which is the most common style in British examples.

The knife handle was found in Grave 22 at Bifrons the description of which can be read here: https://static1.squarespace.com/.../1876+10+The+Saxon...
