41a. From Chillenden to Sandwich is five miles, and the road is in general open and pleasant; we enter Sandwich at the place where formerly stood Woodnesborough-gate, but which has been taken down many years. We shall not pretend to give a particular account of this town, as it is already so excellently done by William BOYS Esqr. F.S.A. in 2 vol. 4to. under the modest title of "Collections for an History of Sandwich"; it will therefore be quite sufficient for us to notice the Churches, and transcribe the Epitaphs (though the substance of them is given by the above learned Gentleman, to whom the author of this work, thankfully acknowledges the greatest obligations:) beginning at St Mary’s. It is situated in the Northernmost part of the Town; is an antient structure of two [sic] ailes, separated by wooden columns, one chancel and a low turret erected over the porch at the South side, in which hangs a small bell inscribed "This Bel was bought and the steeple built A.D. 1718. 81. In this Church was buried Mr Richard KNOLLES once Master of the Free school in this Town, and a learned writer; but there is no memorial remaining of him*.
KNOLLES*. Richard Knolles, of the family of the Knolles’s of Cold Ashby in Northamptonshire, went to the university about the year 1560, and became fellow of Lincoln college. Being appointed by Sr. Roger MANWOOD, Master of the Free School in Sandwich, he left the university and settled at that place; and appears to have been abundantly useful in the former part of his time, by "doing much good in his profession and sending many young men to the universities". But in the latter part of his time he appears to have become remiss, which probably might arise from his paying too much attention to his studies and from allowing too great a portion of his time to the composition of those numerous works for which he is justly celebrated; as we find that it is recorded, that as Mr Knolles had not attended the school with that diligence as it was necessary he should, it was resolved that a more industrious master should be appointed, and that Mr Knolles being dismissed should be allowed a yearly stipend of twelve pounds during life". He died at Sandwich, in a good old age, and was buried in St. Mary’s church, July 2d. 1610.
He was the author of the following celebrated works: "The History of the Turks", Lond. folio 1610; "The Lives and Conquests of the Ottoman Kings and Emperors", etc.; "A brief discovery of the greatness of the Turkish Empire"; "Grammat. Latinae, Graecae et Hebraicae compendium", etc.; A translation from the Latin and French of "The six books of a commonwealth", Lond. 1606; and probably a manuscript English translation of Camden’s Britannia in the Ashmolean museum, No.7469, folio. That he was a learned excellent writer, the following extract from the 122nd. No. of the Rambler, by Dr. JOHNSON, will abundantly testify. "But none of our writers can, in my opinion, justly contest the superiority of KNOLLES, who in his history of the Turks, has displayed all the excellencies that narrations can admit: His stile, though somewhat obscured by time, and sometimes vitiated by false wit, is pure, nervous, elevated, and clear. A wonderful multiplicity of events so artfully arranged, and so distinctly explained, that each facilitates the knowledge of the next. Whenever a new personage is introduced, the reader is prepared by his character for his actions; when a nation is first attacked, or city besieged, he is made acquainted with its history or situation, so that a great part of the world is brought in view. The descriptions of this author are without minuteness and the digressions without ostentation. Collateral events are so artfully woven into the contexture of his principal story, that they cannot be disjoined without leaving it lacerated and broken. There is nothing turgid in his dignity, nor superfluous in his copiousness. His orations only, which he feigns like the ancient historians (85) to have been pronounced on remarkable occasions, are tedious and languid, and, since they are merely the voluntary sports of imagination, prove how much the most judicious and skilful may be mistaken in the estimate of their own powers. Nothing could have sunk this author in obscurity, but the remoteness and barbarity of the people whose story he relates. It seldom happens that all circumstances concur to happiness or fame. The nation, which produced this great historian, has the grief of seeing his genius employed upon a foreign and uninteresting subject; and that writer, who might have secured perpetuity to his name, by a history of his own country has exposed himself to the danger of oblivion, by recounting enterprises and revolutions of which none desire to be informed".

82. In the Church Yard, at the South side, is a Tomb inclosed with Iron rails, on which is: Hic jacent corpora Johannis et Gulielmi CARDER. Johannes Carder Chirurgus animam exhalavit 6 Julii anno Salutis 1686, aet 64. Gulielmus Carder chirurgus, filius Johannis, Ob. 30 Nov. anno 1731, aetatis 74. Per varios casus per tot discri mina rerum. Tendimus in coelum.
