Until recently, Boxley Abbey near Maidstone has been one of Kent's least-explored major historic sites. The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) has been working across the site to improve its condition, increase understanding and offer training. Archaeology has played an important part in this work, with the SPAB strongly supported by experts from the Kent Archaeological Society and other archaeological groups.
The KAS were pleased to grant of £1,400 to support this year's archaeological work.

Matthew Slocombe MA FSA IHBC
Matthew Slocombe is Director of the SPAB. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and Council member of the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain. Matthew wrote the Shire book of Traditional Building Materials.
Jonny Garlick, SPAB Special Ops
'In the early 1990s I trained as a building surveyor, at the South Bank University in London. Following my dissertation on 'The History, Repair and Future for Cob in Devon' I worked with a conservation builder and designer in Devon before becoming a SPAB Scholar in 1996. After the SPAB Scholarship I worked for a small, medium and large sized commercial surveying practises where I became Chartered. I was asked to join the SPAB Technical Department in 2005 and have since overseen the SPAB's U-value and Building Performance Research, carried out over 30 SPAB Working Parties covering the length and breadth of the country, and currently help project manage the SPAB's repair projects and the SPAB British Hydraulic Lime Research.'
Graham Keevill of Keevill Heritage Ltd (cc'd) and SPAB's OHP/Boxley Abbey Consultant Archaeologist
'Graham Keevill graduated in archaeology from the University of Leicester in 1980 and has been in professional practice ever since. He has directed archaeological work throughout England, and has been extensively involved in major strategic studies, management plans and environmental assessments, eg on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (he directed the excavation of Thurnham Roman villa) and at the Tower of London. He is the Cathedral Archaeologist for Rochester, Salisbury, Christ Church Oxford and Blackburn, and fulfils an equivalent role at Tewkesbury Abbey. He has led fieldwork projects at many English monastic sites, including major excavations and surveys at Eynsham and Dorchester Abbeys (Oxfordshire), and complete geophysical survey of the precinct at Tewkesbury (a Scheduled Monument).'
