Funeral Hatchments in Kent

FUNERAL HATOHMENTS IN KENT By Miss M. TESTER AT the restoration of Charles II, following the Co.ntinental fashion, it became customary in this country that on the death of a member of an armigerous family, his or her coat of arms were painted on a board of wood, or canvas, generally lozenge shaped, in a conventionalized style. This board was termed a 'hatchment', a corruption of the heraldic term 'achievement'. The size and style varied according to the period· from 1600's to 1800's. It was carried in the funeral, then hung on the outside of the deceased's house as a sign of mourning for about six to twelve months. After this it would probably be placed in the parish church, usually in a position as near as possible to any memorial of the deceased. From the early Victorian period onwards this practice gradually died out, and is now only carried out exceptionally to commemorate some notability. There are still some royal hatchments to be seen in a few churches, but one must be careful not to confuse the royal arms with these funeral boards. The funeral hatchments still hanging in the churches nowadays often have no particular significance for the incumbent or congregation, and there is an increasing tendency to remove them; or to allow them to fall into disrepair through lack of attention. Therefore in the past there has been little attempt to record even their existence let alone the details of the achievements and the persons commemorated. Now, however, a survey offuneral hatchments for the whole country is being carried out by :rtiir. P. Summers, F.S.A., of Kingswood School, Bath, so as to record all surviving ones b!:lfore they further disappear or deteriorate. Kent, so far, is the county with the highest number to be recorded, and a list is appended showing their whereabouts and the person commemorated in each case. The majority of them are in parish churches, although they may also be found in town halls, museums, and private chapels and houses. The study of these hatchments proves most interesting in their various arrangements and family connections, although very often errors arise so far as the heraldry is concerned. Some are in the form of memorial boards, oblong or square in shape with inscriptions. It is gratifying to record that many of these hatchments have been restored before it is too late. 79 FUNERAL HATCHMENTS IN KENT Although in a few cases the names of the deceased are shown on the hatchments themselves, it is not always easy to identify them . .Attention, therefore, has to be paid to memorial plaques, or monuments in the church, heraldic windows, family vaults and tombstones in churchyards, and failing all these sources recourse must be had to heraldic and genealogical research. This list for Kent is not claimed to be exhaustive and the writer would be very glad to hear of any additions. So many people have assisted already that it is impossible to name them all individually, but grateful acknowledgement is extended to all who have helped in this ,vork. .AI'l'ENDIX No. Place and identificatwn 1 Ashford church Lady Ellen Strangeford (nee Burke), d.1826 1 .Ashford Old Grammar Suhool Remarks Sir Norton J.
