THOMAS PONYNGES LORD DE ST. JOHN, Monday in the Vigil of St. Thomas the Apostle 1428. To be buried within the chancel of the monastic church of the Priory of Boxgraue on the north side of the chancel next the tomb of Lady Philippa sometime Countess of Arundell and of Mautravers, late my wife with a plain marble stone over my said body. To the Cathedral church of Wynton 6s. 8d. To the parish church of Warneford 20s. To the Prior of Boxgraue 20s. To each monk in the church of Boxgraue 6s. 8d. To each order of Friars at Winchester 6s. 8d. and in the city of Chichester 20s. I will twelve torches each of 6s. 8d. to burn on the day of my burial and in my exequies at mass and afterwards distributed to divers churches four to priory churches two to parish churches one to the chapel of Halfnaked, one to the parish church of Walberton Barnham, Myddelton, Brydham and Warneford. I desire that five wax candles containing 40 lb of wax shall be burnt around my body on the day of my burial and twelve poor tenants shall hold the torches aforesaid each of them to have a vesture of black cloth. 
To Isabel my daughter "j doseyne garneshed" of silver vessels for her better marriage. To Edward Seint John my servant 10 marcs. I will that Laurence atte Grove shall have yearly 40s. for term of his life by the oversight of Matilda my wife. To William Hormere 5 marcs. To Richard Pykot 5 marcs, John Prat 40s., John Calcard 20s., Robert Wulsle 20s., Thomas Bradebrig 40s. Residue to Matilda my wife by the oversight of my executors with "duabus filiis nostris " (sic). 
Executors Matilda my wife, John Bohun Knight, Thomas May and Richard Pykot, "per visum Willi Ryman armigeri".Dated at Halfnaked. I leave to Sir Thomas May, chaplain 40s. 

Proved 12 March 1428 in "quidam loco vulgariter nuncupato Halfnaked" by Matilda wife and relict. To alle trewe cristen men that this present writyng tripartie endented seeth or hereth Thomas Ponyngs Lord Seint John sendeth gretyng in God. Forasmuche as I the forsaide Thomas late have enfeffed Henry Percy Erle of Northumberland, Robert Lord of Ponyngs, John Bohun knyghts and other in the maner of Halfnaked and in the maner of Warbelton in the Shire of Sussex with all apperten. And in the Maner of Newbury in the Shire of Kent with the avouson of the cherche to the same maner – longyng with al the apperten, as hit more plainly is contened in a dede of all ye saide Maneris to hem y made and a fyn ressed vpon the same. For the more effectuel credence of this writynge tripartie endented to be yife. I do write the verray and trewe cause of myn entent and wil how in what wyse myn forsaid feffees shul gouerne hem with all ye saide Manerys and londes in bothe shyres abouesaide with all her apperten. After my deces that is to wite that my laste wil is and fully myn entent that my saide feffees shulle dewely and trewely enfeffe mawde my wyf in all the saide maners in bothe shires abouesaid with all her apperten. Foorthwith the avoueson of the saide cherche whanne and what tyme that she lust hem requir hem to haue and holde to here and her assignes al the terme of her life and after the deces of the forsaide Mavde my wyf that the maner of Halfnaked and the Maner of Walberton in the shire abouesaide hoolly with all her apperten. Remayne to Lucas Ponyngs my sone and to his eyres males of his body frely bygete for euermor and for defaute of heyr male of the saide Lucas frely bigete that alle the saide bothe Maners inthe Shyr of Sussex abouesaide with alle here apperten. Hoolly remayne to my sone Thomas hool brother to the saide Lucas and to his heyres males of his body bigete freely for euermor. And yif so be that the saide Thomas my sone deye withowte heyr male of his body frely begete that alle the saide bothe maners in the shir of Sussex abouesaide with all her apperten. hoolly remayne to Thomas my yongest sone half brother to the saide Lucas and Thomas and to his heyres males of his body freely begete for euermore. And yif so be that Thomas my yongest sone aforesaide dye withoute heyre male of his body freely bigete that all the saide both maners in the shir of Sussex abouesaid with all her apperten. hoolly remayne to the right heires of me the forsaide Thomas Lord Seint John for euermore. Ferthermore myn hool wil is that after the deces of Mavde my wyf that the saide Maner of Newbury in the Shire of Kent with all her apperten. forthwith the avoueson of the cherche longing to the same maner hoolly remayne to Thomas my yongest sone that is half brother to the saide Lucas and Thomas and to his Eyres males of his body frely bigete for euermore. And yif sobe that the same Thomas my yongest sone dye withoute heyr male of his body frely bigete that the saide maner of Newbury in the Shyr of Kent abouesaide with all the apperten forthwith the avouson hoolly remayne to my sone Lucas and to his heyres males of his body frely begete for euermore (Remainder as before to ‘Thomas hool brother to Lucas’ and default of heirs). And my ful wil is that the saide Mavde my wyf have her dower of all the londis Rentis and tenements in what shyre that euer thay be ynne withynne this land that I was sesyd of the day of oure weddyng and sithen hiderward. In wytnessyng of which things to this present writ tripertied of my volunte I have put to my seel these men beyng witnessis John Lord of Arundell and Mautrauers, John Pelham Knyght, John Blounham clerk Robert Tauk, Roger Gunter, William Ernele, Thomas Hunston and other I graunted at Halfnaked in the feste of Saint Denys the yere of Kyng Harry the sexte after the conquest the seuenthe.
