Return to Book 23 Contents Page Return to Lambeth Wills Index Page"Nos Frater WILLENLMUS" (BOTTESHAM) by Divine permission Bishop of Rochester recollecting the determination of the holy Doctor Thomas de Acquino etc. I leave my soul to God, Blessed Mary, blessed Andrew the apostle, blessed Dominic and All Saints and my body to be buried in the Convent of the Order of Preaching Friars in London which burial within three days after my death shall be carried out without further delay, at which five proper wax candles shall burn and twelve torches held by twelve poor persons each of whom shall have 12d. I will that that Convent shall have a pittance with those who come to the funeral.
I will to be distributed between my poor tenants at Hayllyng Snodelonde and Trottysclyue 40s. to which I assign of my goods £20 and what remains the said Convent can have by reason of my burial there. I leave to the Friars Preachers of Cambridge £20, and at Lynme £10 if so much remains after my debts and expenses up to £100 to the Convent at Cambridge and £40 to that at Lynme.
To Brother William Bozen a cloak, covering of a bed of tapestry etc and the best ‘canvas’ I have except the coverlet with tapestry on my great bed. To Brother Roger Dymmok a habit. To Brother John Sayll the next best after Brother Roger. I will that John Fynchyngfeld, marshal, and Henry Walpool have their accustomed fees. I leave to John Barbor my chamberlain the covering of a bed with tapestry, curtains, celur, matras etc. on which I lie.
To Thomas Groman and John Cuppere two qrs of wheat equally. To John Sewale, Thomas Boteller, William Totyngton and John Wrenne 8s. by equal portions to pray for me. I will all my servants have their stipends fully for the present term. Residue to my executors to dispose for my soul. Executors: Brother Roger Dymmok, professor of theology, Master John Launce rector of the parish church of Suthflete, Brothers William Bozen and John Sayl of the same Order and I supplicate the Lord Archbishop of Canterbury to be supervisor. Dated in my manor of Trottesclyue 16 February 1399 and of my Translation the eleventh year.
Proved 24 May 1402 by Master John Launce rector of Suthflete and William Bamburgh, Esquire, of the receipts and sales of the goods "bone memorie domini Willelmi nuper Roffen: Episcopi ab intestato defuncti". Good sold to value of £54. 17. 8 ¾. (166b Arundel I)
