"In the name of God, Amen. I John Glyn,
clerke and vicar of Lewsham in the countie of Kent, sicke in body but
hole in mynde and in a good remembrance God be thanked make my last will
and Testament in manor and forme folowing. First I gyve and bequeath my
soule to thands of Almightie God truely trusting by the meritte of his
holy passion to be pertaker of his heavenly blisse in soule and in body
at the tyme of the generall resurrection. In the meane season I will my
body to be buried in the North side of the high chauncell at Lewsham in
a tombe of marbe stone".
To every poor house in the parish 10s. To the
prisoners of Newgate 40s. To every of the Counters each 10s
to be distributed among the poor prisoners. To the Marshall See, to the
Kinge’s benche, to the White Lyon to the Flete and to the Gatehouse of
Westminster 20s each to be distributed among the poor
prisoners there.
To my brother Owen Glyn and to my sister Alice Glynn £20
each. To Owen Staney my cosen £20. To my cosen Prucs children £20
among them. To cosen John Eyton. To his brother Roger Eyton 5 marks and
his brother Geoffry Eyton a legacy.
To Mr David Morgan, Mr Thomas Wonte legacies.
To Alice Harte my servant all my household stuff at Lewsham
and at London (the greate kettell and the greate potte which I gyve to
Dukson the baker excepted).
Legacies to his servant Retherge app Howell and to Mr
Doctor Good Doctor of Phisick.
Executors Mr Wm Roper of Lincoln’s
Inn, Esquire and Mr Henry Jones Doctor of the Civill lawe. To
the former £20 and to the latter 20 marks.
The residue to be employed in works and Dedes of Almes and
charity.
Dated 30 Nov 1568 in presence of Thomas Talbot.
A Codicell made 15 Nov 1568. Leaves legacies to Johan Eyton widow. To
John Carde all his tythes due. Katherine Holmes of London. To the wife
of Robert Edmunds. To his godson George Edmunds an old angel. To John
Lawndishe an old angel. To John Makyn my godson. To Elizabeth Shingler
servant to Edward Merefelde also a small sum "to be spent at my
buriall in meate and drinke". Mr Hughe Apharry to be
overseer.
He forgives Henry Bateman sums due and also Robert Edmunds
the tythes due which are to be given to George Edmunds son of said
Robert my godson.
Directs that the sum left to John Eyton after three years
be employed in purchasing lands etc. for the relief of the poor of the
parish of Lewsham to be distributed by the churchwardens and some of the
most discreet of the parish.
A Codicill made 20 Nov 1568 in presence of John Mody, Kath Holmes, John
Shawe, Johan Kate revokes part of Legacy to Executor Mr Wm
Roper and gives part to his friend Mr John Lewes "Proloc
of th’arches" and to Mr Davy Morgan.
Legacies gyven and bequeathed by John Glyn vicar of Lewsham
the 22 Nov 1568 – viz: to Agnes "my olde mayden", Richard
Stake "my godson", Mrs Mody. John Shawe "the
parishe clerke", Margery "my keper". Powell "my
man" and Alice "my mayden" all tithes due since Easter
last". Mathewe Hunt "my godson". Richard Johnson "my
godson". Cosen John Eaton th’elder. Cosen John Price. John
Lettelworth of Greenwiche. Witnesses Robt Edmonde, John Shawe,
Wm Evans.
In the margin. Item: legacy to "my friende Mr
Doctor Yale. Item the legacy which I "willed in my oder codicill
(see Codicill No.1) to be yearelye distributed amongst the poore
"people of the parisshe of Lewsham Nowe my mynde is and will that
it shall goe and be "bestowed on the findinge of a Schole for the
pffite of the children of the said parisshe "to be taught
there".
