Sir John Gilford,
Knight, 20 Marche 7 Harry VII. To be buried in the churche of Saint
Mildred of Tenterden bifore the Image of the same where the resurrection
of our Lord is made*. To high auter of churche of Tenterden for tithes
forgoten 20s, of Rowynden 20s, of Benynden 10s, of Byddynden 13s 4d, of
Ebbene 13s 4d. My out beryng to be made not pompessly but conveniently
giving to every pooer household of the seid parisshes 4d to praie for my
soule. At my monethis minde & yeris mynde in like wise to be made
& doon and in like forme in the weke of my monethis mynde & yers
mynde doon at Tentirden I will that hit be doon at (the other places
above named) everiche with 5 masses one of the trinitie another of the
holy Goost the thred of thassumpcion of our lady the 4th our
our lady & the V masse of Requiem praieing for me, my fadre &
modre and all christian soules. A trinital for my fadre & modre
within the moneth at the Chartar hous of London trusting gretly to their
praiers & like wise in the hous of Grey Freres at London to whom I
am a brother. Also I will that at my yers mynde be leyde on me a playne
stone & noo tombe with suche epitaphie as by me or myne executors
shalbe devised.
To my son Sir Richard my 2 best bedds one of aras with hangyng therunto
& all apparell, the bed of silke imbrowdred with fedrebed &
bolstar, his owne chambre as hit is, the Rose chambr as hit is and four
yemen bedds. Over this I will that my wif have all the goods that she
brought to me & that I had with her.
I will my feoffes in the new myll called the Fullyngmyll at Strikynbold
mede, that is to sey Wm Brent, Fraunces Catesby, Wm Hed & John
Herynden, suffre & maynteyne my wif to take & perceive to her
& her assignes for terme of 20 yeres 10 marke yerly to fynde with
her wher she be an honest preste to syng for me my fadre & modre my
wives my children my bretheren & sustren & all christian soules.
My son Sir Richard to have my maner of Halden. Revenues of all other
landes, rents, fermes fefermes & mylles etc to goe to performe this
my testament & last will that is to say £23.6.8 to be imploied in
allmys deds for my soule & John Watts sowle of Haukeherst of whom
the seid money come fro & specially in prests synging, fowle waies,
pooer men & whemen in the vii hundr & yn pooer maydens mariages.
Also to Stephen Astable of Wydeam (Odiham) that wedded one of Dobells
doughters £7.
To the heires of that other doughter that Wilsham of Hasting wedded or
to thexecuton of Wilsham £10. To thexecutors of the Erle of Wurcetr
£22. To Richard Jannys son 100s. To the churche of owynden £10, wherof
4 marke was of gift of Alys Betynham & of one Rawlyns of Rowynden
the whiche I receeved.
Also I will that a preste syng for Mathewis soule somtyme my clerke and
wrote my boke of Gower having 13s 4d. Dame Elisabeth my wif & Sir
Richard my son myne executors.
Proved ‘in manerio de Halden coram Domino’ 25 Aug. 1493 by executors
named. [PCC 29 Dogett]
*There is a portion of a 14th century alabaster
"table" of the Resurrection now fixed in the west wall of the
north chancel.
