JOHN MARTHAM of the parish
of Merden in Kent, 7 May 1514. To be buried in the church of St. Michael
of Merden in the middle of the nave before the High Cross. To the light
of the High Cross 4d., of the Blessed Virgin Mary 4d., of St. Michael
the Archangel ---, of St. John Baptist 4d., of St. Christopher 4d., of
St. Erasmus 4d., of St. Henry ----- [King Henry VI].
To Thomasine Crotynden to her marriage 40s. To Parnel [Petronille]
Martham 40s. Residue to Johan Martham my wife whom with Richard Mugge I
make executors. (Latin)
Last will: made in the presence of Thomas Maplisden, Robert Reve,
Wyllyam Rolfe and John Noke of Merden. Myn feoffez Rychard Mugge, John
Swynerton, Thomas Rocalple (sic) and Roger Nash to delyuer vnto John
Stephen of the parish of Goutherst a state of all my landes and
tenements wt merez, paths, lanys and watirs and bildings when it
happenith to fall after the decese of me the said John Martham and Johan
my wyfe.
If it so fortune me to decesse of this Infirmy euery payment conteyned
in same endentures shalbe paid vnto Joane my wif terme of hir lif and
euery payment vnpaid after hir decese to be bestowed in forme folowing.
Furst to an ornament in the parish church of Merden 10 marcs. Item a
foule weye betwixt Clerks gate and Maplisden Went 5 marc. To the two
placez of Friers of Wynchelse 6s. 8d. To Rychard Martham £10 when 24
and if he die £5 to by an ornament for the seid church of Merden and
other £5 in foule wayes betwene my dwelling place and the said church
of Merden.
My feoffes to discharge John Cheseman and Martyne Vyne in the Kings
Exchequer in suche matters as they be tere in troble for me. To John
Swynerton, Thomas Alphe and Roger Naste [Nasch] my feoffez to euery of
them 40d. and I wyll that Rychard Mugge, John Swynerton, Thomas Alphe
and Roger Nasch have the guyding and gouernance of the said Rychard
Martham to put hym to prentyse and receive his part of all thissues of
all his landes and tenements in the towns of Wynchelse and Saleherst.
