STEPHAN SCOTTE of Smarden, clothemaker, 28 August 1530. To be buryed within the churche yard of Smarden betwene the grave of my wife and my sonne. To euery of the lights of Our Ladye and Sainte John the baptiste wt in the same churche 12d. For two yeres a taper of wax of the value of 12d. yerely to be made and sett up before the ymage of Saint Mighell tharchaungell wt in the said church of Smarden there to brenne in the tyme of devyne service. An obyte during the tyme of 6 yeres spending 13s. 4d. and to poore people 6s. 8d. A prest to sing for my soule, my wifes soul, my frends and all xpen soules wt in the said churche one hole yere and to have £6.13. 4.
To Bennett my wife my best bedd complet and twoo of my best kyne and my mare. My houshold stuffe, plate and juells shalbe evenly devided and shisted by the discrecion of Robert Peers, Thomas Scott, Harry Scott and Thomas Lake. If yt fortune the saide Bennett my wife to be wt childe than I will that the said Bennett shalhave the moytie or halfendeale of the said stuff &e and the other moytie or halfendeale to be putt in saufe keping for the behofe of the said childe. If she be not wt childe then among my doughters.
I will my sonnes in law John Frankeleyne, john Kelsam and James Newenden ne anny of them shall not in any wise medle or have tytle wt any of my moveable goods &e.
To reparacion of foule wayes wt in the parishe of Smarden £4.
Executors my said sonnes in lawe and my said cousyn Thomas Scott of Haukherst.
Residue for the help of my soule.
