WILLIAM SWERENDEN, one of the clerks of the Chancery. 27 March 9 Edward IV [1469]. To be buried where I shall depart ‘ab hac luse’. To the Master of the hospital of St. Bartholomew Westsmythfeld for tithes &e 40s. To the image of the most glorious virgin and mother Mary in the church of the hospital to be honorably painted a new 40s.
To the amending and reparation of the parish church of Boughton Maleherbe in Kent 6 marcs.
I leave to Margerie Rutland my sister 3s. 4d. I will that Edward my son have 40s. and certain ‘domicilia’ in a cedule specified. To each of my sisters Elizabeth and Katerine one of my gowns.
I will that William Kynght, chaplain, one of the brothers of the said hospital have 13s. 4d. annually during his life out of the 10 marcs William Colyn is held to pay for a mesuage and lands at Swerenden, to pray to the most High for my soul and for the souls of Laurence my father and Johanne my mother, Johanne and Johanne my wives and all ‘proles mei’. Residue to Edithe my daughter to her marriage and I pray Robert Palmer, William Head and John Hevynden to be my executors. [Latin]
Last wille: of William Swerenden 21 February 8 Edward IV of his landes and possessions in the parisshes of Boughton Maleherbe, Hedecorne, Cleve and Higham and Hoo in Kent. Feoffees to make a state to suche ten goodemen of the parissh of Boughton of a rent of 10s. The wardeyns of the parish church of Boughton to receyve the said 10s. and to imploye and speade it in the form suyng vppon 5 honest preests and 3 clerks vpon the Tewesday in the Esterwyke to say a dirige afore the euensong and on the morowe a masse of the feste, another of the Trinite the iij de. of or Lady, the iiij of the Appostiles and the vth of Requiem, praying of the soules of the said William, Johanne and Johan his wifs, Laurence his fader and Johanne his moder and all cristen soules and espiall his godfadres and godmoder and such as he hath had most cause to pray for, yeving to euerych suche prest 4d. and a clerk 2d., the parish clerk for his Rynging 4d., 3s. 4d. in brede, chese and ale, to be eten and dronken aftre the masses be said among suche as it shall please to be their and pray for the said soules. And the wardeyns for their labour yerly 6d. and remnaunt of the 10s. yerely to be imployed aboute the Crosse light in the same churche in the worship of the blissed passion of oure lord Ihu.
The same William prayeth and willith his executours that thei selle by the best price that they shall mowe all his londes &e in Clive, Higham and Hoo and the money to be deliuerede to William Swerenden soon of the said William 40 mark, if he remitte and quite clayme to Richard Swerenden his brother alle his title in certayn land in Milton beside Gravesend, the which discended by right of enheritaunce aftre the discease of Johanne his moder to hym and to Richard his said brother and yf he will not make a reles then eche £20.
The annuyte of 10 marks William Colyn, talyhchaundeler of London and Alice his wife have granted to said William Swerenden the fader for term of certeyn yeres, to pay detts and spially to Robert Palmer of money borowed and to John Herynden of 25 marc, provided by the sayd William Swerenden the fader in mariage with Edithe his doughter.
Feoffees to make a state of londs in Boughton and Hedecrone to Edward sonne of sayd William the fader and for defaute to remayn to William Swerenden the sonne and for faute to Richard Swerenden his sone.
The sayd William the fader willityh the sayd executours to deliuer to Edward, William and Richard sonnys and to Margery his servant the perticuler store conteyneth in a cedule and the remnant to Edithe his doughter. The said William bequeathed toward the making of the Stepill of Seynt Barthilmewe Spitell in London 13s. 4d. and two weddyngryngs.
To the werks and reparacon of the parish church of Eggerton in Kent 13s. 4d.
To Edward his son A tabyll and a payr of Trestellis, ij bras potts A good panne of a myddell syse A materas with a bolster. A payre of Blanketts, ij payre of good large shetys. A good couerlit and a good pelowe. A flat pese of paris syluer vncouered, vj sponnes of siluer. One of ony best gownes. A basyn and an ewer of latyn. A tabill cloth and a towell of diaper
an iron spit at Swerenden with all other instruments of houshold there, ij Latyn candelstikks a long joyned stole and xls. in money.
To William his son A tabill with a countre therin. A cheire. A fedirbed, a matris, ij bolsters, ij payre of blanketts, iij payr of shetys, ij couerlitts, a good pellowe, fhe bras potts, pannes, peautre and all other instruments of iron, latyn and bras and stolys beyng at Cleve, except a fire chafir of latyn and ij long stolys. An almery, a flat pece of siluer of paryce werk vncovered, vj siluer spones,l the grettist maser, my gowne furred with fychewe and another lyned. The secund joyned chest, a tabill cloth and a towell of diapre.
To Richard his son A rownd table with an almery vndre hit. A long joyned stole. A litill turned cheyr. A brass pot of Spaynissh latyn. A good mene panne. The lesser spit. A payr of potte hooks of iron. My best matras with a good bolster and a pelowe, ij payr of good newe shets, ij couerletts. A flat pece of Paryce werk siluer couered, vj spoones of siluer, a litill maser, a spruce chest. All the tayll clothis and towells beyng at Clieve and a dyaper Towelle at home, ij candilstykkys of laton, a bason and a lauer of pewter, a payre of blanketts.
To Margery his seruaunt A curs matras, ij payre of good shetis, a payre of Blanketts, couerlete, a Tabill cloth a playn towell, a lyned gowne, a lytill brass panne.
