JOHN POKYLL of Barsted in Kent, 6 August 1513. To be buried afore the aulter of Swete Jhus in the Cathedrall Churche of Rochester. To the hige aulter of Bersted to the mayntaynyng of a light before the holy sacrament 21d. euery yere lb of wax tell the seid some by spendyd. To oure Lady lyght next the highe aulter 16d. and to the holy Roode lofte in the lofte (sic) 16d. for wex to brenne in the seid place. To the reparacions or ornaments of Barstede churche 10s. to pray for my soule, my father and mother soules and all xpen soules. A will that the churchwardens ther or my feoffes shall take of the proffits of Milgate and of the londes as they be together in Thomas Fullers handes of my leace and shall leve [levey] by the lawe euery yere xijd. for terme of 4 score yeris tyll the some of £4 be to them fully paide to this entent that they shall fynd with 8d. therof euery yere of the seid yeris lb of wax brynnyng afore the holy sacrament at the highe aulter in Barsted churche and 3d. of the seid mony to be gyven to 3 pouer men or wymen in the holy tyme of Lent euery yere during the forseid yeris, and for makyng and settyng up of the seid wax the seid wardens or foeffes to take them self the on peny rest of the 12d. euery yere.
I bequeith to some godis almeshouse for pouer people and pilgrymes there to rest be nyght a materas and a bolster.
To euery monke beyng prest of Rochester Abbey 6d. to euery nouyce there 4d. To euery monke beyng prest of Boxley 4d. and to euery novice there 2d. To euery chanon and prest of Ledis 4d. to euery novis 2d. to praye for me and myn and all xpen soules.
Also I woll that yf my executours in performyng of this my testament have nede that than by my executours my crofte the whiche Bedford occupieth by me lease for 6s. 4d. by yere be sold, orells a wodde called Clerkenwode.
I gyve my cousyn John Pokyll three quarters of whete and 5 qrs of barley of the Cornes the whiche he oweth me.
Residue I gyve to the disposicion of William Fresell, priour of Rochester and my suster Godleff Pokyll otherwise Deve whom both I make my executours.
Last Will: of all my tenements and londes where my cousyn John Pokyll and other be seased to my vse and performyng of this my testament and laste will in the parisshes of Barsted Thorneham, Detlyng, Holyngbourne, Maidestone, Middilton or ells where. Fyrst I will that where my foeffes be seased of and in a tenement called Malgate with all the londes therto belongyng beyng in the lece betwene Thomas Fuller and me I will my executours take vp by sufferaunce of my feoffes of the revenues &e and to gyve vnto the place of Higham euery yere 26s. 8d. till £4 be fully paid, that my Ladies there maye praye for me and forgyve me also. Also my executours take of the proffits of the tenement and landes abovesaid to content my debts and to make restitution to all suche as I have doone wrong vnto yf any suche be or can be knowen.
Also of the yerly profitts of Melgate 20s. to be paid after other legacies to the vicare of Barsted and his churche in restoryng of a certen Rent of 12d. by the yere. Also I will that the Priour of Rochester and Convent of their souccessours have for the terme of 4-score yeris next xj acres of lond called the Ryes by Banks with a tenement and tilehoste 3 acres of lond and a lytell grove of wode there joynyng set next my Tylehoste ayeust Berstede lease to pray for my soule and all xpen soules vnder certen condicions and covenaunts comprised in a lease made betwene the seid priour and Convent and me beryng date 4 July the yere above specificed and yf the seid Priour and Convent may laufully wt in the seid terme of 4-score yeres …….for euer to their monastery the seid tenement and lands and observe and will observe for euer all suche covenants and agrements in the seid Indentures than I will, gyve, graunte and conferme for ever the forseid tenement.
I woll my cousyn John Pokell have Clobcrofte next my tylehoste lands the which sumtyme was his as he hade it afore by his fathers will and therfore he to fynde yerly di lb of wax brynnyng afore ower blissed lady in Barsted churche by the space of 20 yeres and in lyke maner di lb of wax brennyng afore seynt John Baptiste there duryng the seid 20 yeris.
I woll my suster Godlefe shalhave all my tenements, londes and tilehouse within the shire of Kent except Clobcrofte and such as I have assigned to the Abbey of Rochestre for my obite and yf she decease withoute issue then the remaynder with all condicions to John Pokyll the sonne of William Pokyll and his heires and in defaulte the remayndre therof to William Pokyll, sonne of Thomas Pokyll and in defaulte of all these than to the next of my Kynne all this to remayne.
Also I will that my suster Godlef durying her lyff yerely shall gyve for my soule and all xpen soules in holy Lent 13d. to pouer people at euery fest of Ester and at euery fest of the Concepcion of oure lady 13d. Also yf it cannot be broght to good ende the ordynaunce of myn obite above expressed than and in that cace I will that myn executours fynd an honest prest to saye and syng for me at the place of my burying by the space of three yeris.
