WILLIAM BRENT of Charrynge [Charing]. 21 December 1495. To be buried in the parish church of Saints Peter and Paul
of Charryng next the tomb or sepulcre of Roger Rey or according to the discretion of my exeuctors. To high altar 5s. To the light of the high cross 20d. of Saint Mary 12d., of Saint James 12d., of the Holy Trinity 12d., of the Apostles Peter and Paul 12d., of Saint Nicholas 6d., of Saint John 4d., of Saint Christofer 4d., of Saint Margaret 4d., of Saint Michael 4d. To the works (fabrice et operibus) of the church 13s. 4d.
To Anne my daughter wife of Edmund Millys 13s. 4d. To John, Edward, William and Margaret sons and daughter of the said Edmund Millys and Anne his wife to each 6s. 8d.
To Elizabeth Wombwell my daughter 13s. 4d. To Johan daughter of the said Elizabeth and John Wombwell 6s. 8d.
To Margaret my daughter to her marriage £40. I wish that my chaplain William Fitz James shall continue to celebrate there for my soul and the souls of my parents as long as it shall please my executors. To each of my godsons 4d. I will that my executors provide for ever 10s. yerely out of a meadow called Broktonysmede by the occupants of my mansion house in Charryng [Charing] for my obite in the church of Charryng [Charing] for masses and gifts to the poor.

This is the last will of me William Brent of Charryng, gentilman, made the 21 December 11 Henry VII to Lord John Fyneux, Thomas Brent, -------- Elcocke, John Nethersole, Xpofer Elendon, John Auger, John Duke and Roger Pende my feoffees. My foresayde foeffees to suffer myne executours to take the profittez of all my manours, landes &e. in the parisshes of Charryng, Sevington, Smerden, Boughton, Malerbe, Challoke, Kenyngton, Wyllysbergh, Henxsell, Lymme, Wy and Boughton Alhoff all the term of 3 pres to performe my will, and after to suffer Amie my wife to have my dwellyng place in Charryng with all odre landes and tenements in Charryng and the mille called Filthesmylle with all odre landes callid Filthes unto the tyme that John my sonne come to thage of 22 yere so that she lyve soole and not maried for and she marie thanne I will that my foeffes suffre my executours to take the profit unto the tyme that John my sonne come to thage abovesaid paying yerely to my wife 10 marke duryng the saide terme bonde to fynde John my sonne to scole till he come to thage of 22 and than my feoffes to make a state to the saide John his heires &e. for ever yeldynge to his modre duryng her life 10 merke yerely also to suffer his modre to have all suche chambers as my Lady Moile had with the parloure under nethe the saide chambres duryng her life if she lyve sole or els not.
If John my sonne dey a fore thage of 21 with owte heires thenne all the saide dwelling place, landes and tenements in Charryng and the mylle with the landes callid Filthes remayn unto Thomas my sonne on like forme. And if that Thomas dey afore he come to thage of 22 than I will that Amie my wife shall have my dwelling place with all the odre landes terme of her life if that she life sole and not maried for and she be maried I will that all the foresaid landes remayn to Roger my sonne yelding to her yerely 10 merke.
Also I will that my feoffes after the terme of three yere make a state if they be requyred unto Amie my wife of the maner of Perevington with the avowson of the churche of Perevyngton all my landes in Smerden callid Sclefynden and landes in Boughton callid Chapmanfolde all the terme of her life keping reparacions and doyng no waste and after her decease to remayn to Thomas my sonne his heirs &e. And if that Thomas die afore the age of 30 yere with owte heires thanne the said maner with avowson lands callid Sclefyndon and Chapmanfold to remayne unto John my sonne if he or his heires overleve Thomas or Ellis to remayne to Roger his heires &e. I will my feoffes make a state unto Roger my sonne his heires &e. of the maner of Rippell Wicheley and Halficke with all rentis scutes and servyses, and a state to Roger my sonne of all landes and tenements in Lymme to hym and his heires for evermore.
Also I will my feoffes suffer my executours to take the profittes of all my landes in Challoke, Kenyngton, Willesbergh and Henxhell to performe my wille as well in makyng of my chappell as other thynges according to my said testament and laste will. And further to do ther in as I shewid my broder John to shew unto my broder Doctour that is to say to sell parcell of the said landes if my said wille cannot otherwise be performed. And whanne all is performed thanne I will all suche landes as be in Kenyngton, Willesbergh and Henxhill remayn to Roger my sonne his heires &e. and the landes in Challok to remayne to my wife all the terme of her lyfe and after to remayne unto John my sonne. Also I will my messuage and lande in Boughton Alholf and a pece of lande in Wie be solde for the mariage of my doughter.
Also I will that he so ever have or occupie my dwelling place in Charryng shall have 4 acres of medowe Broctonysmede to kepe yerely and obite in Charryng churche for ever of 10s. yerely to be done in dirige, masses and almes gevyng to pouer people to pray for my sowle my frendes sowles and all christenne sowles. The Inventory taken on the death of William Brent is in the possession of The Rev. T.S. Frampton F.S.A. of Dover, who has kindly allowed the following copy to be made. It has generally been asserted that the Brent’s House in Charing is only a portion of the original but this inventory does not disclose a building of any greater size.
