21 June 1554 (3 & 4 Philip and Mary). Richard Sheff of the Paryshe of Cranebroke, clothier. To be buryd in the paryshe chirche of Cranebroke in Saynt Thomas chauncell besyde the body of my father there. I will there be bestowed vppon an alter clothe for the alter dedicated to God in the said chauncell and for other necessaries there £5. Towards the reparacion of the said chirch and for my burying place 40s. Prestes clerks and poor people £4. At my monthes mynde 40s. An obett for 4 yeres in the chirch of Cranebroke 40s. to pray for my soule.
To Elizabeth my wif £200.
To euery of my doughters now being unmaryed that is to saye, Margarett Sheff which at the making of this my will is 16 yeres and a halfe; Alyn Sheff of the age of 15 and a half; Margery Sheff of the age of 18 yeres and a half; Mary Sheff 11 yeres and 3 quarters, and Anne Sheff 6 yeres at Easter next before the date of this my present Testament, £50, to be paid at their severall mariages. If all die then to Thomas and William my sonnes when William come to age of 22 yeres. I will that Thomas my sonne stand and be charged wyth the bringing up of all my saied doughters vntill they be 25.
To Thomas Sheff my sonne one of my gobletts of syluer. To Elizabeth my wif my beste goblet of syluer wyth the couer, and my salte of syluer and gylt and all my syluer spones. To Katheryn Love my doughter one siluer pott wyth a couer to the same and a scripture ther uppon parcell gilt. To Anne Knachebull doughter of Richard Knachebull and Johanne my doughter £3. 11. 8 at her mariage.
I will that Thomas Sheff my sonne shall Kepe and bring vpp my two Wanyars [ ? = one year old] till suche tyme as either of theym have a calf and then bothe the heyffers and the calves to Mary Sheff and Anne Sheff my doughters. Thomas my son for 16 yeres shall deliver to Elizabeth my wif at the messuage wch. I nowe dwell in or at my messuage where Robert Clachynden nowe dwellith situate in the parish of Cranebroke 20 loods of good wood redy made.
To William my sonne £400 and land to be bought therewith.
To Walter Hendley my cosen my best gowne &e. To John Sheff my brother £5. To Mathewe Cryar my gowne faced with grograyn. To Sr. John Baker Knyght £5. To Mr. Richard Baker esquyer £5. Resydue to Thomas my sonne and executor and Sr. John Baker Kt. and Mr. Richard Baker Esq., ouerseers.
Last will: of my landes, tenements &e. in the parish of Cranebroke or ells where. To Elizabeth my wif in consideration and satisfaction of all suche dower as shuld fall and happen to the said Elizabeth after the death of me Richard Sheff, all my tenement and gardyn wch. Robert Calchynden nowe inhabitethe in the parish of Cranebroke and an annuytie of £10 out of my other messuages &e. in Cranebroke and the use of the greatt parlor at the upper end of the hall of my pryncypall messuage wch. I now dwell in and the chamber over and the two chambers next the harber [ ? = arbour] of the said messuage, the lytle buttry and the lytle seller wythin the said messuage.
To Thomas my sonne all my messuages and lands in the parish of Cranebroke and for lack of heires to William my sonne.
To William my sonne my marsh landes in the parish of Ivechurch and in default of heires to Thomas my sonne.
Witness: George Atkynson, vicar, Richard Cowrtop, William Cortopp, Henry Allard, Water Henly.
