JAMES BROWN of the Town of Maydston [Maidstone], 8 November 1488. To be buried in the churchyard of the collegiate church. To the high cross 8d. To the light of the blessed Virgin Mary of Pytee 4d., of St. Cristofer 4d., of St. Erasmus the Bishop and Martyr 8d., if St. Thomas the martyr 8d., of St. Katharine the Virgin 4d. To the reparation of the Collegiate church 8d. To the reparation of the Great Bridge of the Town 12d. To the parish and house of Aylesford to pray for me, Thomas Bourghchier late Archb: of Canterbury, Elizabeth late my wife 12d. [Also to several other houses to pray for same].
I leave and order that John Brown my son if he shall live after the decease of Alice his mother shall have my ‘federbed’ and to Johan my daughter another, and to her 8 marks of what I received from Phillip King for a messuage I sold to him for her marriage.
To Robert Pak ‘filio meo’ [?filiolo-godson] 12d. To Johan daughter of Thomas Dipdale my goddaughter 12d.
Residue to Alice my wife and she and Robert Reynold to be executors. Witnesses: Dom. William Page, parish chaplain my confessor, Richard Arnet, Roger Andrews.
Last will: William Ensyng, William Lilly and Robert Ragnold my foeffees of in my messuage and garden situated in a certain place called Glastlane in Maideston called ‘Le Sarsynnyshede’ to permit Alice Brown my wife to have and hold the same until John Brown my son be 20 then to make a state to him and his heirs (remainder to Alice my wife and Johan my daughter after her).
