In the Church
Chancel.
1. (On the glass of east window). In honour of God and in affectionate
remembrance of his father and mother, John and Isabel HARDY. G.H. mdccclxii.
2. (On the reredos). To the glory of God, and in thankful remembrance of fifty
years of happiness granted to our parents, 1838-1888.
3. (Brass on chancel arch, north side, close to pulpit). In memory of Richard
FARLEY, who having been parish clerk and sexton of Benenden for 27 years, died
suddenly on the 12th February 1874, aged 57. The Vicar of the parish,
William John EDGE, hereby records his grief for the loss of one whom he greatly
esteemed, and who for nearly sixteen years was his constant and faithful
assistant in all the services of this house of God.
North Chancel.
4. (Marble monument against north window). Sacred to the memory of Thomas
Hallett HODGES of Hempstead Place in this parish, Esq. High Sheriff of the
county of Kent in the year 1786, who died June 23, 1801 aged 47 years. And of
Dorothy Hodges his wife (youngest daughter of William CARTWRIGHT of Marnham in
the county of Nottingham, Esq) who died January 21, 1800 aged 48. They left five
surviving children, Thomas Law Hodges of Hempstead Place, Esq; Henry Hodges,
B.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge; Edmund Hodges; Ann Elizabeth Hodges; and
Julia Frances Hodges. Their second son, John Hodges, died on board the Warley
East Indiaman, on his passage from Madras to China, October 9, 1793 aged 16
years. And their fourth son, Francis Willoughby Hodges, third Lieutenant of His
Majesty’s frigate Diana, died of the yellow fever on board of that ship in the
West Indies, July 15, 1800 aged 17 years. Three of their children died in their
infancy, and are buried in the same vault with their father and mother, viz:
George Hodges, who died March 25, 1784 aged 14 days; Charles Hodges who died
April 7, 1786 aged 1 month and 21 days; Caroline Dorothy Hodges who died October
26, 1791 aged 1 month and 6 days.
5. (White marble tablet on black ground). Sacred to the memory of Rebecca, wife
of Thomas Law HODGES, Esq. of Hemsted in this parish, only child of Sir Roger
TWISDEN, Bart, of Bradbourne Park in East Malling, who died a short time before
her birth. She was the last survivor of that ancient family, born at Bradbourne
January 5th 1780, married February 16th 1802, died at
Hemsted February 2nd, 1843. Her affectionate duty to widowed mother,
her love for her husband and children, and her active sympathy with the
sufferings of the afflicted and the needy, were sanctified by an unfailing trust
in the merits of her Saviour, and the deepest resignation to the divine will.
(Arms below: Or, 3 crescents sa. on a canton of the second a ducal crown of the
first. Motto: Praevisa mala periunt).
6. (White marble tablet on black ground). Sacred to the memory of Thomas Law
HODGES, Esq. of Hemsted, deputy lieutenant of the county of Kent, Justice of the
Peace for the counties of Kent & Sussex, chairman of the quarter sessions
for many years and major in the West Kent Militia. He represented the county and
subsequently to the passing the reform bill the western division in five
parliaments. He married in 1802 Rebecca, only child of Sir Roger TWISDEN, Bart,
and had issue Thomas Twisden Hodges, Esq. who married first, Mary Ann Floretta
CHANDLESS and secondly Rosa WILSON, widow of General Sir W. NOTT, K.C.B. Anne
Rebecca, wife of Cook Tylden PATTENSON, Esq; Frances Dorothy, wife of the
Honourable Robert FORBES; Caroline Cordelia Hodges; Julia Elizabeth, wife of the
Revd. W.M. Smith MARRIOTT; Katharine, wife of William PEARETH, Esq; Charlotte
Lydia, wife of Edward Barrett CURTIES, Esq; Francis, Frederick George &
Owen, who all three died in infancy. A true patriot, a kind and liberal
landlord, an unfailing friend to the poor, faithful in every relation of public
and private life, he served his generation according to the will of God, and now
rests in sure and certain hope of a blessed resurrection, through the merits of
his redeemer, born June 3rd, 1776, died May 14th 1857.

7. (Same as last tablet). Floretta Mary Ann, only daughter of Thomas CHANDLESS,
of York Place, London, Esq., the beloved wife of Thomas Twisden HODGES, Esq.,
born August 28th 1797, died at Sandgate April 18th 1849,
leaving no issue. Her devoted affection for her husband, her extensive and
unostentatious charities to the sick and distressed poor, will never be
forgotten by those who knew her well. May our blessed redeemer reward her in his
heavenly kingdom. Her mortal remains are placed in the family vault in this
church, awaiting a joyful resurrection.
8. (On the floor behind the organ). Here lyes the body of Edward GULDEFORD of
Hempsted, Esq. who dyed the 4 of September 1678. And Anne Guldeford his wife,
daughter of Sir Robert THROCKMORTON of Coughton in the county of Warwick, who
died ye 3 of December 1710. Requiescant in Pace. (Parish register: Dame Anna
Mariah Guldeford, widow).
9. Here lyes the body of Dame Mary FORTESCUE, widow of Sir Edward Fortescue of
Bragnam, who dyed the 30th of June 1693. Requiescant in Pace.
(Register has: 1694 July ye 10th. Dame Mary Ffortescue, widow).
South Chancel.
10. (Mural brass). Under this stone doeth lye buried ye body of Edmond GIBBON
late of this parish of Benninden, who dyed ye last of January in Anno Dni. 1607.
Who was ye principall founder of ye free scole of Benninden and gave the livinge
that thereto belongeth.
11. (East window). A memorial of thanksgiving June 12 1867. J.S.H.C.M.W.H. (On
the occasion of the marriage of Hon. John Stewart HARDY).
12. (Window). In memory of Jane Isabel HARDY, born March 16th 1843,
died June 21st 1862.
13. (On south wall). P. SCHEEMAKERS, Sculptor, Anno Domini 1750. Near this place
are deposited the remains of the Right Honourable Sir John NORRIS of Hempstead,
who after fifty years faithful service in the Royal Navy, attained the supreme
Command, with the rank of Admiral of the Fleet & Vice Admiral of England. It
is but bare justice to his memory to say, since so much at least may be said
with the strictest truth, that there never breathed a better Seaman, a greater
Officer, a braver Man, a more zealous Wellwisher to the present Establishment,
nor consequently a truer Englishman than this Sir John Norris.
14. (There is a marble bust above the monument, and beneath the inscription:
Arms: Quarterly, argent and gules, a fret or; impaling Arg. a cross sa. between
four Cornish choughs ppr. Crest: A Cornish chough rising ppr. Curiously the date
of his death is not given, but Hasted III, p.83 says, Sir John Norris, Knt.,
died May 13, 1749, leaving issue by Elizabeth his wife, daughter of Matthew,
Lord AYLMER, 4 sons, of whom John Norris Esq., his eldest, succeeded him here,
and resided at Hemsted).
15. (Beneath the foregoing). Sacred to the beloved memory of Mrs Sarah NORRIS,
daughter of the Right Honourable Sir John Norris. The delight and constant
source of inexpressible happiness to all who knew her. Her soul was delivered
from this earthly prison on January 19th 1762 in the 50th
year of her age, to receive the reward of the righteous in the paradise of God.
Reader, if a life who uniform pursuit was every virtue that could adorn her sex,
if an illustrious example of uncommon piety in a dissipated age, if a brightest
elegance of manners with the warmest benevolence of soul mark the character of a
woman worthy to be recorded to posterity, here let the tear drop and hence
receive the accomplished portrait of female excellence. Her afflicted nephew,
John AMBROSE, of Mount Ambrose in the county of Dublin, and Kingdom of Ireland,
caused this to be inserted, to perpetuate his irreparable loss, and in testimony
of his affection for the memory of the best of women. Anno nostrae salutis 1791.
16. (Window). To the memory of Edith Elizabeth GRAHAM, born January 31st
1847, died January 8th 1875.
South aisle
17. Sacred to the memory of John Samuel LAZONBY, Esq. who practised as a surgeon
etc. for many years in this parish. He died November 3rd AD 1835,
aged 43 years. This tablet is erected by his friends and neighbours, who will
long deplore the loss of one so distinguished for his professional skill, zeal
and benevolence, so highly respected for his integrity and morals, and so
endeared to all by his amiable manners , his unostentatious charity and his
unaffected piety.
18. (Brass plate beneath a window). This window is erected in affectionate
remembrance of Thomas & Sarah NEVE, AD 1868.
19. Sacred to the memory of Frederick BOYS, the 6th son of the Revd.
Daniel Boys, vicar of this parish, and Sarah Rider his wife, who departed this
life on the 13th March 1844, aged 24 years.
20. Sacred to the memory of the Revd. Daniel BOYS, M.A. of St Johns College,
Cambridge. 51 years vicar of this parish and 47 years vicar of Brookland in this
county, who died September 11th 1857 aged 80 years. Also of Sarah
Rider, widow of the above named Daniel Boys, she died August 4th 1863
aged 79 years.
21. Sacred to the memory of Daniel BOYS, eldest son of the above named Daniel
Boys, and late of this parish and of Finchley Road, Hampstead, who departed this
life
23rd October 1873 aged 65 years. His strict integrity, combined with
his many virtues, endeared him to all who knew him.
22. (Ornamental brass plate on the wall). The body and chancel of this church,
being much dilapidated, were to a great extent rebuilt beautified and with the
exception of the font, entirely refurbished in the years of our Lord 1861 and
1862 at the sole expense of The Right Honourable Gathorne HARDY, MP of Hemsted
Park in this parish. The church was reopened for Divine service Easter Day A.D.
1862 and the inhabitants of Benenden, desirous to record their gratitude to God
and their deep sense of obligation to their benefactor for this good work, have
erected this tablet as a memorial to future generations. August A.D. 1866.
23. In memory of Mary, wife of Thomas HUNT and one of the daughters of Anthony
PAUL of Halden in this county. She departed this life in the month of January
1759. Thomas Hunt above named who departed this life in the month of May 1783.
Philadelphia, wife of Paul Hunt, who departed this life in the month of October
1792. Rebecca MAGDALEN, widow of the above named Thomas Hunt, who departed this
life in the month of May 1805, and of Paul Hunt, above named, who departed this
life without issue, in the month of May 1826 aged 71 years. He was the only
child of Thomas Hunt by Mary his wife and the only surviving descendant of
Anthony Paul.
Tower.
24. (Brass in front of ringing floor). The west window of this church was
erected in memory of Thomas Law HODGES, Esq. by the tenantry on the Hemsted
estate, AD 1866.
25. This church was ruined by a storm of thunder and lightning 30th
December 1672 and rebuilt 1677 and finished in the year 1678. Stephen SHARPEIGH,
Gent, Richard CRYER, Churchwardens; Richard SHARPE, Gent, Thomas HUNT, Sidemen;
James MUNN, John CHITTENDEN, Churchwardens for the year 1713. (On the fly leaf
of the Parish Register, which begins 1653, is this entry: July 21 1678 first
child baptised in the new church).

26. Sacred to the memory of Richard DAVIS, Esquire, of this parish who departed
this life 13th November 1828 aged 72 years, and of Margaret, relict
of the above, who departed this life 28th May 1847 aged 84 years.

27. East of the church (within enclosed ground). An unspotted life is old age.
Harold GATHORNE-HARDY, born 24th March 1850, died 11th
June 1881. "He that believeth in me though he were dead yet shall he
live".
28. "He giveth His beloved sleep". Jane Isabel HARDY, born March 16
1843, died June 21, 1862.
29. Sacred to the memory of Thomas MANWARING of this parish who died November 28th
1849, aged 50 years.
30. Sacred to the memory of Edward GOWER, son of Edward and Elizabeth Gower of
this parish, who died June 17th 1823 aged 63 years. Also Mary their
daughter, who died May 16th 1835 aged 68 years. Also Elizabeth their
daughter, who died February 25th 1836 aged 71 years.
31. In memory of Edward GOWER, Senior, late of this parish, who died 4th
July 1804 aged 68 years. Also Elizabeth his wife, who died 18th July
1794 aged 65 years. John their son died 15th June 1767 aged 4 years.
Their surviving issue: Edward, Elizabeth, Mary and Ann. As also John, his son
(by Elizabeth his second wife, whom he left surviving), who died in his infancy.
Likewise near this place are buried in one grave the father and mother of the
said Edward Gower, who died nearly at the same time. Also their sons George,
John, Robert and his wife.
32. Sacred to the memory of Robert SHOOBRIDGE, who died November 26th
1874 aged 79 years.
33. Sarah, wife of Robert Shoobridge of this parish, who died May 9th
1828 aged 39 years. Left issue surviving 5 sons and 1 daughter, viz: Thomas,
George, Robert, James, Charles and Silvester.
34. Sacred to the memory of Robert SHOOBRIDGE of this parish who died May 10th
1848 aged 81 years, leaving a widow, four sons and two daughters, viz: Richard,
John, Robert, Samuel, Mary and Sarah. Also of Sarah, wife of the above who died
February 23rd 1854 aged 84 years.
35. In memory of William SHOOBRIDGE who died 26th June 1819 aged 46
years. Also of Philadelphia his wife who died 7th April 1845 aged 77
years.
36. Sarah SHOOBRIDGE died November 22 1781 aged 1 year and 10 months.
37. In memory of James, son of Joseph and Ann SHOOBRIDGE of this parish who died
the 21st of May 1825 aged 10 months and 10 days.
38. (Upright cross). Charles NEVE, late curate of Woolston, eldest son of
Richard and Emma Neve, born December 15 1858, entered into rest March 12 1886.
"Watch and pray".
39. In memory of Charles MARSHALL, M.A., Vicar of St Bride’s, Fleet Street for
36 years, and Prebendary of St Paul’s, who died 29th of January
1883 in the 80th year of his age. And of Sarah Elizabeth, his wife,
who died at her residence, Ripley Court, Surrey on the 4th of August
1883 in her 72nd year. "I know that my redeemer liveth".

40a. In memory of Francis BOYS, born 31st May 1821, died 10th
October 1878.
40b. In affectionate remembrance of Daniel BOYS, the eldest son of the late
Reverend Daniel Boys, for many years vicar of this parish, born 28th
August 1808, died 23rd October 1873.
41. Erected to the memory of John DUNGEY, late of Maidstone, who departed this
life July 8th 1831 aged 63 years. Also Ann, wife of the above, who
departed this life January 28th 1830 aged 60 years. "And as it
is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgement". This
stone was erected by order of his sole executor, Mr John KIRBY of Maidstone,
victualler.
42. "Our days upon earth are a shadow". Job. 8 Chap. 9 Ver. Sacred to
the memory of Jane, wife of Owen SOUTHON, who died December 4th 1852
aged 24 years, leaving a husband and one son, viz: James Shoobridge, aged 16
months, to lament the loss of an affectionate wife and a kind mother. Also of
the above named James Shoobridge Southon, born August 7th 1851 died
April 16th 1855. "The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away:
blessed be the name of the Lord". Job. 1 Chap. xii Ver.
43. In memory of Jane, the kind and affectionate wife of James SHOOBRIDGE of
this parish, who died on March the 3rd 1847 aged 71 years. Also the
above named James Shoobridge, who died on May the 4th 1853, aged 77
years. "Life is short, death is sure, sin the cause, Christ the cure".
44. In memory of Elizabeth, wife of William BARROW, who died July ye 22nd
1770 aged 20 years. Also William her son, who died an infant. "She like a
rose was fresh and gay, but now is cut down and lies like clay".
45. (Double headstone). In memory of James BARROW of this parish, yeoman, who
died ye 19th of August 1757 aged 47 years. Also in memory of
Elizabeth, wife of James Barrow. She died May ye 15th 1782 aged 71
years. Left issue 5 sons and one daughter: James, William, Thomas, Larence, John
and Elizabeth.
46. In memory of John BARNS of this parish who died December 11th
1833 aged 26 years, leaving a widow and one daughter, Mirriam, to lament their
loss. Also of Miriam CLARK, daughter of the above who departed this life
September 1st 1862 aged 29 years.
47. (On the side of a ledger stone). In memory of Emma EDGE, born 27 November
1817, married 31 January 1839, and died 25 November 1871.
"The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away. Blessed be the name of the
Lord".
48. Sacred to the memory of George LANSDELL of Eaglesden in this parish, who
died August 8th 1881 aged 71 years. "His soul to Him who gave it
rose, God led it to its long repose, its glorious rest". Also of Harriet,
wife of the above who died April 30th 1887 aged 73 years.
"Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord".
49. In affectionate remembrance of Joseph RELF of Mount Pleasant, who died June
26th 1865 aged 43 years, leaving surviving a widow and 4 children,
viz: Eliza Jane, Joseph, Katherine and John.
50. Sacred to the memory of Joseph RELF, yeoman of this parish, who died May 12th
1844 aged 73 years. Left surviving Frances his widow and two children, 1 son and
1 daughter, viz: Joseph and Frances Jane, also Caroline Elizabeth, daughter of
the above Joseph and Frances Relf who died September 13th 1843 aged
22 years. "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his
saints".
51. In memory of Rohn RELF of this parish, who departed this life 24th
February 1823 aged 85 years. Also Elizabeth his first wife, who died 8th
September 1772 aged 28 years. And of Jemima his second wife, who died 30th
July 1790 aged 43 years. Also of one daughter Elizabeth, aged 25 years, is
buried in the adjoining grave. Left surviving by his former wife 2 sons and 2
daughters, and by the latter 2 sons and 3 daughters.
52. In memory of John GUDE of this parish, who died January 20th 1793
aged 59 years. Left issue 1 son and 2 daughters, viz: John, Mary and Elizabeth.
Also Mary his wife who died September 20th 1797 aged 67 years.
53. In memory of Mary, eldest daughter of John and Mary GUDE, second wife of
John SPARKS of this parish, who departed this life (with a cancer in the breast)
February the 24th 1817, aged 54 years.
54. In memory of John GUDE, bachelor, son of John and Mary Gude of this parish,
who died March 16th 1832 aged 68 years.
55. In memory of John WENMAN of this parish who died June 21st 1821
aged 46 years, leaving a widow, 3 sons and 1 daughter. Also Elizabeth, wife of
the above who died September 14th 1845 aged 79 years.
56. In memory of George, son of John and Elizabeth WENMAN of this parish who
died January 19th 1837 aged 31 years. Also Emma, born January 9th
1843 died September 18th 1848. Thomas Smith, born June 19th
1833, died October 4th 1848. Ellen Elizabeth, born July 29th
1847, died March 25th 1849. Frederick George born January 13th
1839, died April 6th 1861, children of John Gude and Sarah Wenman.
57. In affectionate remembrance of Mary GUDE, the beloved wife of Frederick
TURTLE, M.D. of London. Born January 11th 1832, died December 10th
1864.
58. (Close to the Vicarage gardens). Sacred to the memory of John SPARKS, late
of Stansted in the county of Hertfordshire, who departed this life November 30th
1825 aged 61 years.
59. In memory of Mary, wife of John SPARKS, who departed this life January 18th
1807 aged 42 years.
60. In memory of Amy, wife of Thomas DAY of this parish who died April the 30th
1806 aged 51 years. Left issue one son, James.
61. Sally BROWN died November 13 1778 aged 20.
62. Ann BROWN died June 17 1771 aged 7 months. (Register 1771. June 21, Ann,
daughter of Greenland Brown, infant).
63. Sacred to the memory of Ann, widow of Mr W. MASTERS of Rolvenden, formerly
the wife of Mr J. SPARKS of this parish, and for twenty years a faithful servant
and friend to the family of Thomas Law HODGES, Esq., late of Hemsted. She
departed this life in humble hope of a blessed resurrection through the merits
of her Redeemer on the 4th of September 1860, aged 77 years.

64. Sacred to the memory of William BUCKLAND of this parish, who died March 11th
1833, aged 71 years. Left surviving Rebecca his wife, two sons and one daughter.
Also of Rebecca, wife of the above who died January 10th 1852 aged 89
years.
65. Sacred to the memory of Thomas Elcock BUCKLAND, son of William and Rebecca
Buckland of this parish, who died November the 23rd 1814 in the 31st
year of his age.
66. Sacred to the memory of William, son of William and Rebecca BUCKLAND of this
parish, who died December the 22nd 1809 in the 23rd year
of his age. Also James and George their sons, who died in their infancy.
67. In memory of Thomas, son of George and Rebelle ELCOCK of this parish, who
died August 6th 1783 aged 10 years and 11 months.
68. Sacred to the memory of Rebelle, wife of George ELCOCK of this parish, who
died March the 26th 1815 aged 72 years. Left surviving two daughters,
Rebecca and Ann. Also Ann, daughter of the above George and Rebella Elcock, died
January the 14th 1817, aged 48 years.
69. (Covered with moss, difficult to read). Sacred to the memory of two children
[of] Samuel and Philadelphia BARNS, late of this parish. Caroline died October
30th 1815 aged 5 years and 8 months. Amos died December 7th
1815 aged 2 years and 4 months.
70. In memory of William TYE of this parish. He died June 14 1774 aged 60 years.
Also in memory of Elizabeth RABSON, late of this parish, spinster. She died
December 15 1802 aged 75 years.
71. Sacred to the memory of Richard MILLS of Pump House in this parish, who
departed this life March 5th 1845 in the 82nd year of his
age. Also Elizabeth his wife, who died March 21st 1845 in the 66th
year of her age. Left surviving 3 sons, Richard, George and Edmund.
72. In memory of Richard MILLS, late of Pump farm in this parish, who died
January 25th 1882 aged 83 years.
73. "Thy will be done". In affectionate remembrance of Peter PINYON,
Esquire, surgeon of this parish, who died December 31st 1873 aged 42
years. Universally respected, leaving a widow and one son, George Beale. Also of
Fanny WITHERDEN, wife of the above Peter Pinyon, who died April 14th
1884 aged 49 years.
74a. In affectionate remembrance of Richard FARLEY of this parish, who died
February 12th 1874 aged 57 years, leaving Frances Matilda his widow,
to mourn her loss. "Watch therefore, for ye know not what hour your Lord
doth come".
74b. Here rest the remains of Henrietta Matilda, wife of William WESTON, and
dearly loved child of William & Mary CHENNELL. Died May 29th 1872
aged 41 years. "Come unto me all that are weary and heavy laden and I will
give you rest". This stone is erected in fond remembrance by her mother.
75. Sacred to the memory of Charlotte, daughter of Richard and Elizabeth MILLS
of this parish, who departed this life at Maidstone in this county, December 5th
1835 aged 25 years. Also Eliza, their daughter died March 27th 1837
aged 21 years.
76. In memory of Alfred, son of Richard and Elizabeth MILLS of this parish, who
departed this life October 22nd 1810 aged 7 years.
77. In memory of Thomas DRURY of this parish, yeoman, who died January ye 6th
1768 aged 83 years. Also Rebekah his wife who died March ye 22nd 1765
aged 78 years.
78. Here lieth ye body of Sarah, wife of Joseph ILDEN of ye parish. She died ye
5th of November 1748 in ye 85th year of her age.
79. Here lieth ye body of Robert HAYWARD, yeoman in this parish, who departed ye
life November ye 11th 1751, aged 61 years. Left Ann his wife. By her
he had 5 sons and one daughter, William, Isaac and Samuell, deceased, now
surviving him Robert, James and Elizabeth.

80. Sacred to the memory of Thomas BLACKWELL, late of this parish, who departed
this life February 13th 1830 aged 56 years, leaving a widow, 4 sons
and 3 daughters, viz: Thomas, William, Edward, John, Mary Ann, Elizabeth and
Sarah Charity. Also of Mary, wife of the above named, who departed this life
December 20th 1855, aged 68 years. Also of Elizabeth, daughter of the
above who died March 25th 1851 aged 35 years.
81. James, son of Thomas and Mary BLACKWELL, who died March 31st 1829
aged 4 years.
82. Sacred to the memory of John BUSBRIDGE of Staplehurst, who departed this
life May the 2nd 1816 aged 72 years. Also Jane, wife of the said John
Busbridge, who departed this life July the 19th 1817 aged 52 years.
Left issue: Two sons and two daughters, viz: John, William, Mary and Ann.

Ramsden in this parish, who died 28th September 1870 aged 72 years.
Also to the memory of the aforesaid Thomas Wightwick who died 31st
January 1875 aged 81 years.
84. This stone is set up in memory of Sophia Summers, who died at Cranbrook
February 6th 1876 aged 92 years and 11 months, by W.J. EDGE, vicar of
this parish, in token of the high esteem in which she was held by himself and by
all his family, for four generations.

of few days, and full of trouble". Also of Elizabeth his wife, who departed

and three daughters, viz: John, William, Joseph, James, Mary, Sarah and Judith.

88. In memory of Henry DRAWBRIDGE who died November 26th 1818 aged 26
years.
89. In memory of John MILLER, late of Cranbrook, farmer, who died October the 7th
1817 aged 68 years. Also of two sons, William, who died an infant, and John a
youth. Also Elizabeth, wife of the above said, who died November 21st
1831 aged 74 years.
90. In memory of Mary PANKHURST, spinster, who died August 20th 1841
aged 89 years.
91. Here lye ye body of Richard, son of Alexander and Margaret NARWOOD of this
parish, who died ye 13th of September 1749 in the 49th
year of his age. The above Alexander and Margaret had 9 children, viz: Mary,
Ann, Mary, Francis, Martha, Sarah, Alexander and Richard. The said Alexander and
Margaret and 5 children lie near this stone. The 2nd Mary was
interred at Fairly in Sussex, Francis at Thurnham in Kent and Sarah at
Rolvenden. Now surviving only Alexander. (Register 1749. September 19, Richard
Narrwood).
92. "Ever with the Lord". In fond memory of Mary Jane BURT, who fell
asleep in Jesus December 26th 1870 aged 30 years. Also William,
father of the above, died May 20th 1843 aged 86 years.
93. (Altar tomb within iron railings). Sacred to the memory of the Reverend
Daniel BOYS, M.A., late vicar of this parish, and also of Brookland in this
county, who died September 11th 1857, aged 80 years. He left
surviving Sarah RIDER his wife, who was the youngest daughter of William
Barrington RICHARDSON, Esq. of Bermondsey, Surrey, by whom he had issue 12
children, viz: Daniel, Sarah, Thomas, James, Robert Edward, Emily Jane, George,
Frederick, Francis, Charles Octavius, Alfred William and Susannah Catherine.
Sarah died July 1st 1839 aged 29 years. Frederick died March 13th
1844 aged 24 years. George died May 17th 1858 aged 40 years.
94. Sacred to the memory of Sarah RIDER, widow of the Reverend Daniel BOYS, born
20th March 1784, died 4th August 1863.
95. Sacred to the memory of George GOLDSMITH of this parish, bachelor, who
departed this life June 1st 1842 aged 69 years. He was for upwards of
forty years a faithful servant to Mr John RICHARDSON of Sarnden in this parish.
This stone was erected by James GOLDSMITH as a tribute of esteem and affection.
95a. In memory of Amelia S.R. LAZONBY, who departed this life February 22nd
1829 aged 18 years.
96. Beneath this stone are deposited the remains of John Samuel LAZONBY, Esq.
who died a bachelor November 3rd 1835, to whose memory a tablet has
been kindly erected in this church by his friends and neighbours.

Rolvenden and only child of William GIBSON of Benenden. She departed this life
March ye first 1747 aged 22 years. In memory of William GIBSON of this parish,
yeoman, who died November the 21st 1757 aged 62 years. Also to the
memory of Martha, wife of the said William GIBSON, who departed this life
November 28th 1763 aged 72 years.

who died November 19th 1823 aged 28 years. Also Polly COLEMAN, mother
of the above Elizabeth Shoebridge, who died September 29th 1834 aged
62 years. Left issue 2 daughters, viz: Mary and Elizabeth. Also Elizabeth their
daughter who died January 28th 1824 aged 5 months. Likewise 2
children who died in their infancy.
105. In memory of John RICHARDSON of Sarnden Farm in this parish, who died
November 5th 1846 in the 82nd year of his age. Also
Philadelphia, wife of the above, who died November 6th 1843 in the 70th
year of her age, leaving 6 sons and 5 daughters, viz: Philadelphia, Mary, John,
Sarah, Hannah, Thomas, Mercy, James, William, George and Francis.

memory of Elizabeth MILLS, died November 16th 1846 aged 23 years,
eldest daughter of John and Philadelphia Mills of this parish. Also Joseph their

of January 1827 aged 91 years. Also of Sarah his wife who died the 8th

112. This stone is erected in memory of Ann BONNICK, wife of William Bonnick of
Cranbrook, who departed this life May 24th 1799 aged 29 years.
113. In memory of two daughters of Joseph and Sarah HINDS, Molly departed this
life September the 18th 1786 aged 24 years. Hetty departed this life
May the 24th 1777 aged 14 years.
114. Sacred to the memory of Joseph HINDS of this parish, who departed this life
October the 28th 1801 aged 75 years. Also Sarah his wife departed
this life December the 18th 1801 aged 74 years. Left surviving one
daughter, Sarah.
115. Beneath this stone are deposited the remains of Joseph, son of Mr Jenkin
HAGUE of Biddenden, Kent, and Sarah his wife. He died at the early aged of 20,
November 24th 1813, having conducted himself in all instances as a
dutiful son to his parents, and an example of good morals to those of his own
age. His afflicted mother erects this stone to commemorate his worth, and her
own great and premature loss of an affectionate child.

the said time he buried 1022. He died March 24th 1810 aged 73 years.

parish, who departed this life September 5th 1841 aged 70 years,
leaving surviving Susannah his wife and issue two children, viz: Montague and

1863 aged 57 years. Also to the memory of Richard, son of the above named
Richard and Susannah Mills, who died July 27th 1832 in the third year
of his age.

lieth the body of Edmund GIBBON, who died January 1727 aged 53 and Sarah, his
wife, who died June 1751 aged 75. They had three sons and two daughters. The
surviving are Sarah who married Samuel PLUMER of Sedlescomb in Sussex, gent, who
also lies in a vault near. Francis, who married the daughter of Samuel STILEMAN
of Otford in Kent, gent. Here lieth the body of Francis Gibbon of Cranbrook who
departed this life February the 20th 1756 aged 53 years. His said
wife is also buried here. She died 29th September 1785 aged 77 years.
Their only son Walter was buried in Clerkenwell churchyard. The same vault
contains Sarah, wife of the said Samuel Plummer, their daughter Martha, wife of
William WARD of this parish, and their daughters Martha, Elizabeth and Sarah.
The last married William CLEVELAND of London, who died September 1820 and lies
in the same vault with Sarah his wife, who died July 19th 1842 aged
79 years. In the said vault lies also Sarah Cleveland, the youngest daughter of
the said William and Sarah Cleveland, who died April 3rd 1869 aged 77
years. (Register, 1727. January 15. Mr Edmund Gibbon, sen. House holder). At top
of stone a shield, lion rampant bet. 3 escallops. Arms being: Sa. a lion
ramp.guardant or, between three escallops ar. Crest a demi lion ramp. guard. ar.

151. Here lyeth the body of Christopher DIVE of this parish, yeoman, who died
August ye 27th 1729 aged 52 years. Left issue Thomas, Elizabeth, Mary
and Ann. Also the body of Mary, wife of the said Christopher Dive died May 19th
1754 aged 63.

of this parish, who died September 14th 1847 aged 44 years, leaving a
widow and one daughter. Also of Matilda his wife who died April 23rd

parish, who died June 4th 1823 aged 58 years, leaving a widow, three

erected in affectionate remembrance of her long and faithful services by the
family of Thomas Law HODGES Esquire, M.P. of Hempsted.
187. Sacred to the memory of John DEAN, who died at Hemsted in this parish April
12th A.D. 1809 aged 57 years. He lived in the service of Thomas
Hallett HODGES, Esquire and of his son nearly thirty four years, and by his
integrity and fidelity justified the confidence reposed in him. This stone was
erected by Thomas Law Hodges, Esquire to record his esteem for an old and
faithful servant.

1629, buried June the 25th 1684, who left issue two sonnes, John and

this parish 34 years, and of Lydia his wife. He died January the 27th

Lydia, Mary and Jane, of whom Thomas is since deceased and lies interred
close by this stone. He died September the 29th 1761 aged 38

year of his age. Here also lyeth ye body of Mary, wife of ye said John
Crothall, who died the 14 of February 1751 aged 83 years. These stones
were erected to their memory of Richard Crothall.

died February the 1st 1741 aged 40 years. Left issue one son
and one daughter, Edward and Peggy. Also in memory of Edward, son of
Edward Dunkin by Margaret his wife. He died May the 17th 1757
in ye 21st year of his age.
285. In memory of Margaret, wife of John JENKS of this parish, who died
August 26th 1768 aged 61 years. Also in memory of Catharine,
wife of the above said John Jenks, who died February 1 1781 aged 66
years. Also in memory of the above said John Jenks who died May 27 1793
aged 84 years.
286. Erected to the memory of William FARLEY of this parish, who died
June 26th 1847 aged 71 years. Also Kezia his wife died
February 6th 1855 aged 84 years. Left issue surviving six
sons and two daughters.
287. In memory of George MOORE of this parish who died December the 21
1719 aged 55 years. Also Mary his wife died May the 8th 1771
aged 87 years. Likewise in memory of one son and two daughters.
Elizabeth died October the 18th 1785 aged 72 years. Samuel
died October the 10 1786 aged 68 years. Mary died April the 3rd
1782 aged 78 years.
288. Sacred to the memory of Hannah, the wife of John WENMAN of this
parish who died January 6th 1855 aged 44 years.
289. Here lieth the body of David HARLOCK of this parish, who died
December the 12th in 1757 aged 90 years. Here lieth ye body
of Margaret, wife of David Harlock of ye parish, died April ye 12 1749
aged 72 years. Also near this stone lie ye bodys of 1 son and 3
daughters, John, Elizabeth, Eleanor and Mary. Left surviving 3
daughters, Margaret, Jane and Mary.
290. Sacred to the memory of Caroline Jane, the beloved wife of George
CORK, who departed this life May 19th 1857 aged 35 years. She
left surviving two sons, Frederick George and Charles Albert.

carpenter, who died April ye 17th 1769 aged 75 years. Here
lyeth ye body of Elizabeth, wife of Richard Butcher, and eldest daughter
of David HARLOCK, both of ye parish. She died August ye 2 1739 in ye 35th
year of her age. Had issue 8 children, of whom 4 survive, John,
Elizabeth, Thomas and Mary. In memory of one of the best of wives.
292. Sacred to the memory of Ann, daughter of Thomas and Ann REEVES of
this parish, who died June 5th 1842 in the 34th
year of her age.
293. Sacred to the memory of Thomas REEVES of this parish, who died
January 1st 1838 in the 69th year of his age. Ann,
wife of Thomas Reeves of this parish, who departed this life November 21st
1832 in the 63rd year of her age. Left issue surviving four
sons and two daughters, viz: Edward Ayearst, Thomas, Francis, Richard,
Jane and Ann.
294. Sacred to the memory of Mary Ann REEVES, daughter of Thomas and Ann
Reeves of this parish, who died April the 28th 1806 in the 14th
year of her age. And also of John Reeves their son, who died the 9th
of September 1813 in the 7th year of his age.

this parish, who died July 25th 1856 aged 71 years. Left
surviving 2 sons and 3 daughters. "Blessed are the dead that die in
the Lord". Also the above named John Nash, who died January 29th
1874 aged 84 years.
296. In memory of Thomas POTTER of this parish who died May 25th
1810 aged 82 years. Also of Elizabeth his wife who died August 27th
1795 aged 66 years. "Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy
youth".
297. (On top of an altar tomb close to north porch). Here lieth the body
of Francis SMITH Junior and Elizabeth his wife (Elizabeth was daughter
of Luke and Elizabeth WILLORD of this parish). She ……/ 1713 they
left 5 children, viz: ……../ Francis Smith died April 25 1718 in the
28 year of his age (broken). (Register 1713. June 8. Ffrancis Smith
poor).
298. Sacred to the memory of Walter, second son of Walter OTTE Esq. of
Plumbors Hall, Essex who departed this life August 17th 1843
aged 13 yers.
299. In memory of John WENMAN, carpenter, of this parish who died March
24th 1844 aged 73 years. Also Ann his wife died December 1st
1852 aged 79 years, youngest daughter of Edward GOWER of this parish,
left issue Edward Gower and John.
300. In memory of Jeffery GILBERT who died January 28th 1838
aged 83 years. Also of Mary, wife of Jeffery Gilbert, blacksmith, of
this parish, who died November the 14th 1821 aged 68 years.
Left issue 3 sons, Jesse, John and Samuel. "Here let her rest, in
undisturbed dust, until the resurrection of the just".
301. Sacred to the memory of Thomas SOUTHON of this parish who departed
this life November 14th 1826 aged 56 years. Also Elizabeth,
wife of the above named, who died December 24th 1841 aged 71
years. Left issue eight sons and one daughter.
302. In memory of children of Thomas and Sophia SOUTHON. Ellen, born
July 1st 1828, died December 25th 1829. Iden, born
May 23rd 1830, died June 23rd 1832. Sabina, born
January 27th 1837, died March 5 1838. "Our rest together
is in the dust".
303. Sacred to the memory of Harry Frederick, son of Humphrey Robert and
Mary PORTER, born at Hemstead May 30th 1854, died August 27th
1857. "Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not:
for of such is the kingdom of Heaven". St Luke, Chap.18, v.16.
304. Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth, daughter of Frederick and Sarah
Ann SIMMONS, who departed this life January 25th 1853 aged
seven months.
305. In memory of John CARLY, yeoman, who died January 10 1786 aged 74
years. Elizabeth his wife who died April 28 1772 aged 57 years.
Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Carly, their daughter, who died April 8 1777
aged 26 years and of their two children who lie interred at Hawkhurst.
306. Elizabeth, wife of Thomas MUNN of this place, brick maker, died 9th
May 1820 aged 73 years. Also the above said Thomas Munn who died August
21st 1836 aged 77 years. Left issue Thomas, James and John.
307. In memory of Maria, daughter of Thomas and Margaret MUNN of this
parish, who was born January 25th 1813 and departed this life
December 5th 1814.
308. In memory of Elizabeth Jane, daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Ann
MILLER of Frittenden, who died November 27th 1834 aged 1 year
and 6 months. Also Mary Ann, their daughter, who died December 2nd
1836 aged 5 years. Also George Charles, their son died July 16th
1839 aged 4 years and 4 months. Also Henry Lovell their son who died May
8th 1840 aged 1 month.
309. "In the midst of life we are in death". In memory of
Edwin SOUTHON of this parish who died April 21st 1858 aged 30
years. He left surviving a widow and one daughter.
310. In memory of Martha Southon LONGLEY, died at Cranbrook August 8th
1862 aged 15 months, the beloved child of Giles and Martha Ann Longley
of London, formerly of this parish. "Suffer little children to come
unto me and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of God".
311. Sacred to the memory of George SOUTHON of this parish, yeoman, who
departed this life April 19th 1856 aged 63 years. Left
surviving a widow, five sons and three daughters. Also of Sarah, wife of
the above who died July 15th 1870 aged 71 years.
312. Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth, wife of Cornelius COLEBROOK of
this parish who died April 13th 1857 aged 33 years, leaving a
husband and infant son, Ernest, to lament the loss of an affectionate
wife and kind mother. "Prepare to meet thy God".
313. In memory of Frederick SOUTHON, youngest son of George and Sarah
Southon, who died 28th December 1865 aged 32 years.
314. Sacred to the memory of John ASHMOLE, son of Elias and Ann Ashmole,
who died June 29th 1842 aged 1 year and 10 months.
315. Sacred to the memory of Thomas MUNN, late of Tenterden, cordwainer,
who departed this life 25th February 1816 aged 58 years. Left
issue by Elizabeth his wife Jarvis, Thomas, Sarah and Charlotte.
316. Erected to the memory of Elizabeth, wife of Jarvis MUNN of this
parish, who died November 13th 1839 aged 64 years. Also of
the above Jarvis Munn who died July 17th 1861 aged 80 years.
Left issue surviving 7 children, Jarvis, Samuel, William, Thomas,
George, Sarah and David.

317. In memory of Martha PUXTY of Rose Cottage. Born December 8th
1828, died January 4th 1888. "A light is from the
household gone, a voice we loved is still, a place is vacant in our home
which never can be filled".
318. Sacred to the memory of Henry CORK who died December 30th
1886 aged 82 years. Also of Mary, wife of the above, who died March 20th
1878 aged 74 years. "It is sown in weakness, it is raised in
power". Left surviving Sarah, Elizabeth, George, Albert, Henry,
Maria and Edwin.
319. Sacred to the memory of Reynolds MARSHALL who died May 3rd
1887 aged 83 years. Also of Martha, wife of the above, who died March 4th
1867 aged 64 years. Left surviving 3 sons and 2 daughters, viz:
Reynolds, John, Elizabeth, Stephen and Lydia.

During the restoration of Benenden Church 1861-62, the gravestones lying
in the floor of the north and south aisles were necessarily covered by
the New York.
The following are faithful copies of the several inscriptions:
320. At a distance of 2ft 6in. from east wall, and 9ft 8in. from south
wall lies a stone on which is inscribed a shield, containing per chev.
three elephants’ heads erased. Crest: an elephant’s head erased (the
lines denoting colours are obliterated). Just below the Coat of Arms is
the following:
Hic jacet Johannes SAUNDERS LL.B. quondam Vicarius de Bennenden in
Comitatu Cantii. Obiit 5 die Aprilis 1724. Aetatis Suae 50.
Serius aut citius Sedem properamus ad unam: Heu dimus (?) huc omnes,
haec est domus ultima nobis.
On the same stone under the foregoing is the following: Richardus
Saunders, Clericus, quondam Rector de Westley in Com. Cantabrigiae, et
nunc Minister de Hawkhurst in Com. Cantii. Amantissimus fratri posuit.

321. At a distance of 13 feet from east wall and 8ft 4in. from south
wall is a very large stone with merely the inscription F. BOYS 1844.
322. At a distance of 22ft 6in. from east wall, and 7ft 8in. from south
wall is a large stone with following inscription: Sacred to the memory
of Anna Maria, eldest daughter of William and Harriet GOBLE of this
parish, who departed this life on the 25th July 1822 aged 15
years. Also to the memory of Harriet, wife of William Goble (spelt Gobee)
who departed this life March 30th 1837 aged 51 years. Also to
the memory of Mary Ellen, third daughter of William and Harriet Goble,
who departed this life September 9th 1845 aged 21 years. Also
to the memory of the above William Goble, who departed this life April
11th 1849 aged 68 years.
323. At a distance of 7½ft. from north wall and about 11ft 6in. from
chancel aisle steps is a stone with the following inscription: In memory
of Henry HEATH, yeoman, who died July the 22nd 1787 aged 30
years. Left issue one son and two daughters. "Calm are the slumbers
of the just, and peaceful rest their sacred dust. Till the last trumpet’s
solemn sound awakes the dead and cleaves the ground. Then shall this
body joyful rise to meet our Saviour in the skies". Also Anna
Maria, his wife, who died June 18th 1800 aged 38 years. Their
eldest daughter, Anna Maria, who died January 30 1810 aged 19 years.
324. At a distance of 7ft 6in. from north wall and about 18ft from
chancel aisle steps is a stone with the following inscriptions: Sacred
to the memory of Henry, second son of Samuel and Ann HEATH of this
parish, who departed this life on the 9th of December 1822,
aged 3 years. Also to the memory of Mary Ann, second daughter of Samuel
and Ann Heath who died February 9th 1838 aged 21 years.
325. Opposite door of stairs leading to chamber over the south porch is
the following: Here lyeth the body of Samuel HUNT, late of this parish,
who departed this life December ye 28 1735 in ye 84th year of
his age. Also here lyeth the body of Mary, wife of the said Samuel Hunt,
daughter of Richard and Mary GRANT of this parish, gent. She departed
this life October the 24th 1740 in the 84th year
of her age. They had issue 2 sons and 3 daughters, of whom 4 survive,
viz: Mary, Samuel, Deborah, Ann, and Thomas deceased.
326. In north west corner of nave, close in corner, is the following: In
memory of Samuel HUNT of this parish, gent, who died December 22nd
1783 aged 64 years. Also Ann his wife, who died May 26 1778 aged 64
years. Also Ann their daughter who died March 18 1774 aged 21 years.
Left issue one son, Samuel. Also Deborah, daughter of Samuel and
Elizabeth Hunt. She died October 1 1781 aged six months. Likewise
Elizabeth their daughter died February 8 1785 aged seven months.

animabus Johanis BRENCHLEY et Willmi MORE. On the gravestone in Mores
Chapel in Benenden: Hic jacet Wateri More Armigeri qui obijt 24 die
mensis Martij ano 1504 et Aliciae uxor dicti Walteri quae obijt. quor
aiabs ppitietur deus. (Brit. Mus. Harl. MS 2129, f.221, b. also
Arch.Cant. xi.396; xiii.137. Harl MS 3917, 20.b.).
