Ashford Baptists Church Minute Books - collected by the late Arthur Ruderman

First Minute Book  - 1689 - 1738
This church appears from papers in the church book to be of ancient date.  In the year 1653 we find there was a Congregation of Baptists assembled here at Wye, Naccolt and places adjacent who formed themselves into a church of Ashford, and constituted eleven Articles of their faith and practice.
In 1689 we find it to be a church of Great Note for it the head at 4 Elders and Pastors John Searles Senior,
Thomas Jordan, George Ellis, Henry Longley,  Elders and Pastors Thomas Quested & John Searles Junior,
Deacons and a large number of members.

The Agreements of these  Association holden at Ashford the
9th day of ye third month 1705.
Messengers names of the six churches are as follows:
Biddenden: Andrew Robins,, John Cooper with Rainor, Poseph Piall, Thomas Burgess, Robert Tanton.
Ashford: Henry Longley, George Ellis, John Searles, Christopher Cooper, Abram Flint, Sampson Peirce senior,
Sampson Peirce junior, Benjamin Barham, Thomas Wilson, Thomas Draper, Thomas Moon.
Rolvenden: Thomas Potton with Baker,  John Sassoll, Thomas Pain, Samuel Hawkins.
Smarden: Thomas Gilham, John Edmott, Thomas Haffenden, Andrew Pasttendon,  Robert Wilson, James Jarvis,
   John Rich.
Hawkhurst: Davis Russell, John Exeter
Canterbury: Samuel Newman, Richard Godfrey, Steven Challow.

Argument 1.
The Church at Ashford query what further ought to be done with Norton Jarman and that party with him that bring offence because our ministers preached up the Doctrine of the Holy Trinity upon which they rout off and are gone to the Church at Canterbury under the care of Luke Daniel Savoury, Samuel Ongly and Searles Jarman.
Answer: That their having been a first and second Admonition given and they still continuing in their Dissout; that it be noted in the Church Books that Norton Jarman being gone disorderly to the said Church at Canterbury that he and those with him are henceforth to be looked upon as members of this Church at Ashford.  Romans 16.17, Titus 3-10.  Signed by us the messengers above said.

Argument 2. Once you today bring the 10 day of ye third month a case of the Messengers of the Church at Canterbury, what the Church shall do or how they shall act towards a person or persons that shall be  …….. in his or their communion with the Church  ……. Anything in principle or practice ……….. may differ from another which this church  ….. the founding thereof did agree to be ……… in and yet on the same account of ……… as to communion and all the Churches ………..Association.
Answer: The church should admonish such persons according to Gospel Riche but if he or they be noted persist in their disorders that then they be noted in the Church Books for disturbing the peace of and  routers from the Church and Breakers of the rules of ye Association.  Phill. 3:15-19, 2 Tim.2: 3-4, and 2 Thess. 3:6

Argument 3: Ashford query what the Church hath to do or how to act towards such a person or persons that shall halt ye good works or away part of the meriting case of Salvation or that the doctrines of God doth lay away necessity upon man to fix or that he is the Author or  Aprover of Sin.
Answer: The Church should use all methods of Love to reduce such persons from such dangerous errors, which if after due admonition according to Gospel  Rules, they shall still persist in their errors, that  then they should be excommunicated from the Communion of the Church.   Titus 3:5, Romans 3 :26-27, James 1:13,14., 2 Timothy 2:25, Galatians 1:6-8

Argument 4: Smarden  Query for as much as their hath been a separation and division in this Church which is known to most of you our Brethren and how it hath been carried on both sides; and how they that have made a dissention from us  than now  what we are to do further in that respect.
Answer: Having heard what hath passed on both sides and finding by Daniel Kingsnorth’s own confession that in several things matters have been so managed that we can see no other at present but that the Separation is altogether unwarrantable by the word of God.  And therefore do advise that Brother Gilham and his Brethren have nothing to do further (they having Admonished them) for as much as that needs not to be cut off that hath rout it false off, and that we conclude that ….. nor none of our members ought to-……….. them but look upon them disorderly in ….. our proceedings.

……. …… Association next year at Brother Thomas ……….. at Smarden ye 8th day of third month   …………..;
                      Brother Ellis to preach.
                          Signed by ye Assembly.

Also in the year 1706, March 3rd an Association of 7 churches where this church sent  12 Messengers.
H. Longley, George Ellis, John Searles, Christian Cooper,  Abram Flint, Samson Pearce senior, Samson Pearce junior, Benjamin Barham, Thomas Wilson, Thomas Draper,  Thomas Moone.

In the year 1735, April 2nd, George Green was ordained Pastor, Thomas Turner and Thomas Clover Deacons by John Exeter and Thomas Haffenden.  We find unity and brotherly love of a large increase at this time and these good men.

On 27th of October 1754 Benjamin Harrison, George Goldsack and Samuel Wanstall was ordained Deacons by  prayer and laying on of hands by Rev. George Green and John Burch.

We find on 21st October 1761 it pleased God to remove this valuable Pastor Green by death – the church appoints a day of Fasting and Prayer the Wednesday after to seek the Lord’s direction in what steps to be taken for seeking a Minister  but it was until 1766 that  Mr Brooks was appointed pastor by imposition of hands by the
                        Rev. D. J. Kennett         )London
                        Rev. B. Wallin  MC        )
                        Rev. B. Copping           Southend
Also John Sutton, Thomas Purssord were ordained Deacons at the same time.
Mr Brooks continued several years as pastor.  After that the church was in an unsettled state for many years.
M. Morgan was the next Pastor but he being of an uncomfortable disposition he left us in the year.

May 15th  1763.
Brother Samuel Brooks having been unanimously chosen as our stated minister and Recommended by letter from the Church at Northampton under the Correspondent Ryland, was received in as a member of this church by Prayer, laying on of hands by Mr. Thomas Birch.

May 15th 1711   The twenty pounds two shillings Brother Goddard gained by with is disposed of accordingly.
Signed by: George Ellis, Henry Longley, Samson Pearce Senior, Benjamin Barham, William Wanstall,  Thomas Moon.

August 20th 1738
At our Church meeting this 20th day of September 1738 we consulted about our friend Ilden’s case he being dispriviledged of his communion with us in the Sacred, order of the Gospel occasioned by several disorders he unhappily fell into as a stain to his profession to the Interest of Christ which he has been convicted of and  fell under it as acknowledging the truth of it.
We first having sought the Lord by Prayer, enquired into his Conduct of late, found nothing to charge him with, only a query of a Debt owed to the church which he owned and did settle it as to all claims which he demands of the people as to former rights to the House of the subscription to him when he served us in the Ministry.  Balancing the whole affair he promising to pay by his Note of Hand what appears owing to the several persons therein mentioned, which they accept of: he now desiring to be admitted as a member with us.  We from his acknowledgment of his sin and declaring in the presense of God his hearty sorrow for his former miscarriages and visible signs we hope ounfained Repentance and a sincere desire in the strength of Grace to live to the Glory of God and honour of the Gospel being thus moved hereunto, do the rest of our fellow Members concurring and confessing their satisfaction in it our friend Ilden himself subscribing with us to this short account of his case and the grounds of our acceptance of him, now receive him a Member in full Communion with us.
God of his rich Grace grant that he with us and we with him, may have sweet intercourses at the throne of Grace for our mutual comfort furtherance and joy of faith.
Signed by us:  George Green, John Moon, George Haffenden, Thomas Clover, Thomas Franklin, John Harrison, George Quested, John Johnson, Thomas Austen, Charles Kettle, John Longley, John Cloake, William Wanstall Senior, John Wanstall, Thomas Wanstall, Henry Johnson, Thomas Knott.
