of Roger LICHFIELD of Betteshanger, Kent 22 June 1512
Roger LICHFIELD, 22
June 1512.
Buried where God shall dispose.
To reparation of Church of Bettshanger 20s. To reparation of Church of
Northborne 6s.8d. To Maison Dieu of Dover 20s.
Edward LICHEFIELD, son and heir unto my son William LICHEFIELD,
deceased, all my title, right in the Manor of Bettshanger and West
Court, also all rents, etc. thereto. Also West street with
appurtenances, and my land at Rolling and to his lawful issue. If none
to my son Gregory LICHEFIELD and his lawful issue, for default to my
three daughters, Alis COKKES, Joan RUTTER, Beatrice WOLETT, and their
lawful issue.
Edward RUTTER, son of my daughter Joan my lands at Napcestere freely,
with their charge of rent, for which I resign (sic) yearly ten
quarters of barley.
Residue of lands and tenements not entailed to my son Gregory LICHFIELD
and his issue. In default to Edward LICHFIELD aforesaid and his lawful
issue. In default to my three daughters and their lawful issue.
To the marriage of the daughter of my daughter Alice COKKS £6.13s.4d.
To my daughter RUTTER £6.13s.4d. and to Roger WOLETT, son of my
daughter Bertice, deceased, 40s.
If I die in Dover then to be buried in the Maison Dieu "in church
place as the master there shall be pleased and think most
convenient", and a priest sing where I am buried for one year. That
my Executor pay to the Master there £6.13s.4d.
A secular priest sing for my soul, Joan my wife, my parents, etc. half a
year at Bettshanger, and half a year in Northborne church, and have
£6.13s.4d.
That the revenues from all my lands for two years after my death – to
perform my Will and if Edward and (?or) Gregory refuse then all
willed to those refusing shall remain to him that refuseth not, but if
both refuse, then they shall be sold to perform my Will, and the surplus
in works of mercy among my own kin.
Feoffees of all lands, etc. - Sir John FINEUSE, Lord Justice, Richard
FINEUSE of Dover, gent, and John WARREN of Dover, gent.
Executor – Edward LICHEFIELD, with John CLARK, Master of the
Maisondieu, and John WARREN, overseers, each to have 20s.
Residue of goods after paying debts, etc. to Edward LICHEFIELD, for to
see me buried, pay my debts, etc.
Witnesses – Lord John CLINTON, Lord SAY, Sir Edward PONYNGS, Lord
Warden, Master Mayor of Dover, John CROKE, John CLARKKE, Master of the
Maison Dieu, Robert RUTTER, Thomas WODWORD, town clerk of Dover, Thomas
COBBS (?or Cokks) of Tilmaston. At Dover in the Vigil* of the
Assumption of our Blessed Lady the year abovesaid.
