Abstract of Will from Ebony, Kent from Arthur Hussey’s Manuscripts

Will of William POTYN of Ebony, Kent 14 April 1497

William POTYN of Ebbeney, husbandman, 14 April 1497.
Buried in churchyard of Ebbeney.
High altar for tithes 12d. Light of the Crucifix there 4d. Of Blessed Mary 8d. St Stephen 4d. Of St Thomas 4d.
High altar at Wittresham 12d. Light of Blessed Mary there ?. Ad opus of new campanilis of Wittersham 26s.8d.
A secular priest celebrate in church of Ebbene for half a year, five marcs (66s.8d.).
Executors – Wife Margery and James POTYN.
Wife have residue after paying debts etc. during her life, then to John my son, on condition that John pay to Joane wife of John COOKE, of Iden 20s.; and to Margaret, wife of Robert SILVESTER my daughter 20s; and to Mariane, wife of William COLYN my daughter 20s.
If daughter Joan die in lifetime of Margery my wife, then wife have all aforesaid goods and chattels for her life and after death of Margery to be sold and money to daughters.
Wife Margery have tenement I dwell in with all lands thereto, for her life then to son John and his issue. If none then my Feoffees – William COWPER, James POTYN, Richard POTYN the younger and John MOSEDEN shall sell the same and from the money ten marcs to the church of Ebbeney, ten marcs to a secular priest to sing in the church for one year, and residue to my daughters then living.
Also son John have five pieces of land upon the Denne of Ewlase with appurtenances which were late Austin POTYN’S, the father of me.
If wife Margery interrupt or let my son John, then she not to take the vayle of my tenement or other of my lands.
