Chatham conference will commemorate England’s ‘Day of Infamy’

The 350th anniversary of the Battle of Chatham, during which Dutch raiders captured HMS Royal Charles, flagship of King Charles II’s fleet while it was anchored in the Medway, will be commemorated at an international conference in the town’s Royal Dockyard Church on Fri 30 June – Sun 2 July.

Sponsored, among others, by the Kent Archaeological Society and hosted by the University of Kent’s School of History and the Chatham Dockyard Historic Dock Trust, the programme will include talks by naval historians from the UK and The Netherlands, a private viewing of this summer’s ‘Breaking the Chain’ exhibition at the dockyard, and a visit to Upnor Castle.
