Third century. The assemblage studied is incomplete, owing to
the retention of certain pieces by the excavator: these
include ibid., nos. 3, 4, 6 and 7 in Oxfordshire red
colour-coat (Young 1977a). No. 11 was stolen from the site and thus not available for
examination. The
net effect of these absences will be to understate the importance of Oxfordshire wares, and
also of grey
'fine' (sandy?) wares, to Chalk in the third century.

published sites utilising vessel rim equivalence analysis have
been consulted. These are: Bishopstone (Green 1977), London,
Angel Court, Walbrook (Orton 1977b) and Ranscombe Hill (Green 1978a). The forthcoming report on the
Marlowe Car Park excavations at Canterbury (Blockley and Day forthcoming) will also contain data of this kind, in addition to that
reproduced here (Canterbury (6)-(9)).
