century (ibid.). Canterbury (l)-(3), (6)-(9) studied by kind permission of the Canterbury
   Archaeological Trust.

   +264+273+274+ 289+303 (layers 195, 273 aceramic, 274 and 289 devoid of rim sherds). Pottery

   c. A.D. 180-250. Studied by kind permission of
Mr D.B. Kelly, Maidstone Museum, with whom
   archive is lodged.

Brenley Corner (2) - Pit J6. Late second to mid-third century.
Brenley Corner (3) - Area 3.1, Pit 1. Late second to mid/late third century.
Canterbury (3) - Bennett et al. 1982, Well 101. Mid-second to early third century.
Chalk (1) - Johnston 1972, layer 8 (Group A). Third century. The assemblage studied is incomplete, owing to
   the
retention of certain pieces by the excavator: these include ibid., nos. 3, 4, 6 and 7 in Oxfordshire red
   colour-coat
(Young 1977a). No. 11 was stolen from the site and thus not available for examination. The
   net effect of these
absences will be to understate the importance of Oxfordshire wares, and also of grey
   'fine' (sandy?) wares, to Chalk
in the third century.
Chalk (2) - ibid., layer 7 (Group B). Late third century.
Canterbury (4) - Frere 1970, Trench DII layer 11 + DIII layer 33. Second and third quarters of third century.

   fourth century.

Canterbury (7) - ibid., MIIA caldarium flood silts. Mid-fourth century.
Canterbury (8) - ibid., Mill layer 429. Late fourth century.
Canterbury (9) - ibid., Mill layer 291. Late fourth to early fifth century.
Wye (2) - Bradshaw 1972; Pollard forthcoming, a. Mid- to late fourth century. Studied by kind permission
   of
Mr J. Bradshaw.
Brenley Corner (4) - Trench 3A, unstratified layers 1-4. Mid-first to mid-third centuries.
Joyden's Wood. Total site assemblage (Tester and Caiger 1954). Late first to mid-fourth century.

In addition to these assemblages, a number of published sites utilising vessel rim equivalence analysis have been consulted. These are: Bishopstone (Green 1977), London, Angel Court, Walbrook (Orton 1977b) and Ranscombe Hill (Green 1978a). The forthcoming report on the Marlowe Car Park excavations at Canterbury (Blockley and Day forthcoming) will also contain data of this kind, in addition to that reproduced here (Canterbury (6)-(9)).
