JAMES FENYS, Knight, Lord of Saye and of Sele, 12 April 1449. To be buried in the church of the Friars Preachers called ‘Grayfreres’ in London. To the same Friars in the day of my burial to pray for my soul £100. To each friar of the said House celebrating mass 6s. 8d. I leave to the work (opus) of the church of Herne where greatest need may be to pray for my soul 20 mrcs. To the work (opus) of the church of Seuenoke where greatest need is 20 marcs to pray for me. To the works (opera) of the churches of Kemsynge and Selee where greatest need is 20 marcs. To the work of the church of Merworth (in same form) 20 marcs. To William Geadynge late rector of the church of Herne for my tithes "male detinatis" and to pray for me 20 marcs. 
To Jane my daughter to her marriage 400 marcs out of my goods or lands. To William Grenelef my servant to pray for me 20 marcs. To William Sherewode my cook £10. To Richard Brokton, to pray 10 marcs. To Robert Rowe my servant 100s. To Lyonell my servant 66s. 8d. To Gaynesford 20 marcs. To Thomas Cook my servant 40s. To Jenyn Frenshman my servant 40s. Residue to Emily my wife to pay my debts etc. Executors: Emily my wife, Richard Miller esquire and John Fraye and Sir Wm. Waynflete clerk Bishop of Wynton to be supervisor. To Thomas Grenelane my servant 66s. 8d., Wm. Tettenere chaplain 66s. 8d. (Will in English as follows:) 
This is the wille of Syr James Fenys Knyght lord Saye and of the Selee made the xij day of Aprill the xxviij yere of Kyng Henry the syxte First it is my wille that myn executors fulfille my testement and paye myne dettes Also y wol that myn enffers enfeffe Emelie my wyf in the manoir of Herne wt al appurtencs to the same manoir be longing In the manoir of Knolle Panterys Jotes and in the manoir of Selee wt al appurtences to the same maners lands and tenements belonging Also in the manoirs of Crowthorn and the advouson of the Chirch of Middlee lyng in the parissh of Romney Crowthorn, Hope, Althalwyn, Iuyechirch, Demechirch, Saynt Marie Church, Burwarde Mersh, Lymene, Newchirch, Orgarswyk, Snaue, Wherehorne, Bakmanston, Orlaston, Rokyng, Kenerton, Lyde, Estbregge, Bylsyngton, Oldromeneye, Middlee wt a litill Hope of Saynt Peter wt ynne the shire of Kent. Also y wol that myn enfeffees enfeffe Emelye my wif in al the lands and tenements wt al appurtenances the which that y bowght of the feoffees of Syr William Sevavuse, Knyght wt in the shires of Kent and Sussex terme of hyr lyf and after hyr decese y wol that al the manoirs lands and tenements Rentes and seruyces abouesaid retourne to Syr William Fenys my sone and to his heres of his body frely begoten. And yf the forsaid Syr William decese wtoute heires of his body frely begoten that thanne al the forseide manoirs lands Rents abousaid retourne to Elizabeth Emely and Jane my doughters and to hyr heires of hry body frely begoten. And yf the forsaid Elizabethe Emelye and Jane defayle wt oute heires of hir body frely begoten that thoome y weol that al the forseide manoirs lands and tenements rents and seruices abouesaid be solde and the moneye therefor recyued be do for my sole my faders soule and my moders soule And for al cristen soules. Also y wol that Sir William Fenys my sone haue the manor of Merworth the maner of Huntyngsfeld the manors of Kenerton wt in the shire of Kent to hym and to his heires of his body frely begoten (with remainders in default as before). Also I wol that al the londs and tenements the which that y haue by the Kyng lettres patent that Syr William Fenys my son haue hem to hym and to his heires malys asmuch as in me lyeth and yf the foreseide Syr William decese wtoute heires that thanne al the seide lands returne ayen to the Kyng. Also y weol that myn executor fynde iij prests iij yere as my wif lyketh best for to praye for my soule. Also y wol that myn executours finde iij pouer men iij yere after myn decese as in mete and drinke and clothing and al that to hem belongeth during the same iij yere Also y wol that there be songe for me wt in vj wykes after my decese CCC messes Also my wil is that William Cheuenyng had ij den a day terme of his lyf to be paied of my manoir at Herne.
