JOHN GILBERT, of the parishe of Benenden, 18 June 1589. To be buried in the churchyard. To be distributed at my buriall as shalbe thought meete by my executors. To Elizabeth Allen my ioyned chest with all such lynnine as is in yt and one flocke bed. Last will of all my landes and tenements. Executors shall pay all debts, legacyes etc., as my fathers last will doth make mencon of they having the letting of my messuage, landes etc., in the parish of Benenden and Cranebrook uppon the dennes of Leasden and Richmanchest. My will is my sonne John Allen shall inhabit and dwell in the said messuage lands etc., payinge £6 yearly to my executors and the Lords rent and he shall have yearly 4 lodes of woode and 2 loades of faggetts for his fewell to burne, and he shall maintayne and keepe ye wood belonging to ye said messuage from hurtinge of the *sheets wth sheeper or any other cattell nor he shall not loppe, toppe or cut downe any tree or executors to displace him and put some other in and after my will is fulfilled to Alice Allen my daughter the said messuage on dennes of Leasden and Richmanchest. If it fortune my said daughter Alice Gilbert (sic) to dye the messuage etc., to remain to my brothers children. I make my brother Thomas Gylbert and William Bence executors. Witnesses, Wm. Burre, Wm. Leides and Tymothy Ledington. Proved at Ashford 27 June 1589. N.B. The Testator’s name is Gilbert but his children appear as Allen except as shown above. (265a Whitgift I).
* "Sheets" = young hogs of the first year – Dictionary Kent Dialect.
