RALPH MELCHBORN, vicar of the parish
church of Wrotham, Saturday next before the feast of St. Alban the Martyr 1404.
To be buried in the Augustine Friars London if it happen me to die there
otherwise in the parish church of Wrotham. To the Prior and Convent of Austin
Friars, London 3s. 4d. To Brother William Bedeford of that Order 3s. 4d. To each
brother of that convent 2d. I leave for the stipend of a chaplain to celebrate
for my soul in the parish church of Wrotham 9 marcs for a year. I leave for a
fix for the Body of Christ to hang in the church of Wrotham 6s. 8d. For a canopy
to be amended and covered with to the same church 6s. 8d. To making three
surplices for those administering in the said church
To each priest celebrating for my soul in Wrotham church on the day
of my death and month’s day each 12d. To each virgin married in the said
parish of 15 years and more who has no father able to marry her nor any
hereditary estate to each 2s.
To Matilda Feiroa(?) 20d, Geoffry Wymark 20d, John Gonge 20d, Eliz
Bokhorn 20d, Isabel Dyne 2s, Johan Croft 2s, and a pair of short sheets of
linen. To the same Johan for the sustentation of her boys a pair of sheets with
canvas with covering. To Cecily Pyrye 3s. 4d., Johan Sote 20d, Johan sister of
Robert Knocker -----, Agnes wife of Thomas ate Hoth 20d, Luke Ouerey and his
wife 2s, Richard ate Hale 20d, Denis Goder 20d, Ellen Goldyng 20d, John son of
John Kyng my godson 6s. 8d, John Kynge his father 6s. 8d. To Sir Richard Wyker
chaplain a gown lined with fustian and a hood to the same.
To Sir John, chaplain of Stanstede my best furred gown. To Sir John
Robyn my next best. To John clerk of Frenyngham my old green gown with a pair of
sheets and a blanket. To Thomas my ‘famulus’ an old red covering a ‘whytell’
and a pair of short sheets with two tunics one of Russet and the other of blue
‘faldyng’.
To William Fysshmonger, London, a gown of Russet furred, with a
hood. To Alice his wife a green lined coat. To the same William and Alice a bed
with coverlet of red powdered with ‘rosys’ with tapestry of stags and birds
a materas with two pairs of sheets with three curtains and a selure. To
Elizabeth sister of the same Alice a coverlet of green powdered with birds and
stags heads with a tester to the same a pair of sheets a new ‘qwylt". To
the said William and Alice a ‘doser’ and a ‘banker’ with six ‘cussyns’
a basin and ewer, three cups of maser
with all my pewter and brass and napery to be divided between Alice and
Elizabeth, and to the said Elizabeth a ‘forsey’ [small press].
To each poor praying for my soul jd but not to exceed 20s. Residue
to my executors, whom I make John Kyng and William Chapell of London.
Afterwards he gave for painting Saint George 6s. 8d, for buying
bells 4 marcs. Present: Thomas Barbur, John Kyng, and Thomas attendant (famulus)
of the said vicar.
Proved 28 June 1404 at Maidstone by William Chapell, fysshmonger of
