HUGH HALSHAM, Knight. 7 February 1441. To be buried within the parish of Westgrensted (Sussex) in a certain chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary. To the Cathedral church of Chichester 20s. To the parish church of West Grensted a whole vestment of cloth of gold, green colour for a priest, deacon and subdeacon, with a cope to the same and a certain new ‘gurdale’. To the parish church of Horsham a silver gilt ‘table’ of the Salutation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. 
To the parish church of Braborne 40s. To the parish church of of Possewyk 13s. 4d., of Stuley 6s. 8d. To the parish church of Combes 20s. and to Robert Wilwes rector there 40s. To the parish church of Shepele a vestment of damask cloth black and white. To the Wardens of the House of Friars minors, London 20s. To each Doctor of Theology of the same house 13s. 4d. To the Prioress of Rowsparre 6s. 8d. and each nun 3s. 4d., and to sustain and ornament their church 70s. with a damask ‘thoga’ of black colour.

I leave for funeral expenses £30. Residue to Thomas Fawkes, clerk, Edmund Mille, George Stydolff, Thomas Grene and William Brent my executors and John Fysshelake, clerk supervisor. Witnesses: Patrick Grene, John Barker, John Gravelyng, William Stoke clerks, Richard Clothalee, John Hake, Nicholas Stydolff. Dated at West Grenstede. To all trew crystynmen to whom yis present writyng comyth to Hughe Halsham, Knyght, sendith gretyng in God. For as moche as hit ye not vnknowe that I have made a state to Thomas Fawkes. John Fychlake clerks, Edmunde Mille, George Stydolff, Thomas Grene and to William Brent of all ye londis and tenementz rents and seruices wt. all ye appertinants the whiche I hadde in the parechches of West Grensted, Horsham, Nothehurst, Cowfold and Shirmanbury as in diuerce euidencs to hem by me mad opynly apperith to what extent I wyll that hit be knowe to hem and to all othir men that this is the last wyll of me the seyd Hughe that aftir my desese I wole that my seyd feefees by good avice and deliberacon 
Sell all the seyd londys and tenements, rentis and seruises to the most availe for me that they may take therefor and the good that they may take therof I wole that they performe my bequetthes to all my seruantz and to eueri of hem accordyng to my testament and the ouerpluce that they take of the seyd landys and tenements I wol that they be sett it in the Countre there as hem semyth the werks of mercy beth most nedefull for helpyng of my soule my faders my moders my wyves my brother Richard and all my auncestirs aftur ther good discrecion. 
Also wher that I made estate to certen feffes of the manere of Braybourne wt. the appertenantz by licence of the Kyng to hem and to her heyres for euere asin the seyd licence and a dede of feffement thereof to hem by me I mad more opynly shewith I wold that hit be knowe to the seyd feffes that I pray and require hem as they wole answer to God that they suffre myne executours to tak up all the profitz and availes of the seyd manere of Braiborne wt. all the apportinantz fro the day of makyng of this my will onto the terme of Michelmesse next comyng and fro that terme of Michelmesse next comyng vnto the ende and terme of iij yer then next folwynge and wt. the profites and reuenues of the seyd manere of Brayborne 
I require and charge my seyd executours that they kepe my houshold at Grenstede and all my seruantz souche as lykyth to abyde there xij monethes aftir ye day of my dying wt. mete, dryngke and clothyng souche as langyth to there degree and the ouerplus of the profitz of the seyd manere I wole that they ordeyne ij honest prists for to synge for me and for my fadir my modir my wyves my brother Richard and for al my auncestres and for all cristyn soules as long as the seyd ouerplus wole laste. 
Furdermore I pray my seyd feffes of the seyd manere of Brayborne that anone aftir the terme aforseyd in the manere and forme abouseyd do that they make Estate of the seyd manere of Braiborne wt. all the apportionatz to my next heires so that they do not besy to lette this aforeseyd my will and if hit so be that my next heyers wold in ony manere wyse lette my sayd will Thanne I pray requir and charge my seyd feffes of the seyd manere of Brayborne that they make estate of the seyd manere of Brayborne [crossed out] a noone aftir soche lettyng of my last will by my seyd heyres to my seyd executours and her heires for euer Also and hit may be knowe her aftir that any other persone or persones have any estat tytill or enteresse in any of the forseyd landis tenementz rentis or seruisez in the parushes aforseyd by reson of ony feffement or otherwyse to the vse and profite of me the seyd Hughe whiche I cannon remembr at this time I pray requir and charge hem as they woll answer a for God that they make souch referrement or relees ther of to the seyd Thomas Fawkes, John Fyshlake, Edmond Mille, George Stydolff, Thomas Grene and William Brent what tyme they woll requir hem as they shall desir resonable in performyng this my last will and in enforcyng of their estat. In wytenessyng of the which thyng to this present writyng I have sett my seal the X day of Feuerer the yer of the regne of oure souerayn lord the Kynge Harry the sexte aftir the conquest the XXti.
