... on the 19 day of Aprill Anno Domini 1635 in the 11th yeare of the reign of our Sovereign Lord Charles by the Grace of God of England, Scotland, France and Ireland King, Defender of the Faith.
   I Joane Eaton wife of Nichas Eaton of the town and parish of Dover in the County of Kent, Jurate, being at present sick and weake of body but of good and sound memory and remembrance (thanks be given to Almighty God) and being willing to set an order for such estate as my good and gracious God hath lent me have thought good and doe advisedly make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and forme following.
   First and before all other things I give my body and life to God that gave me ... and my soule to Jesus Christ who redeemed me and is the true Messuis by whose death I hope to live for ever. And for my body I commit it to the earth whereof I was made to bee in decent and fitting manner buryed in the churchyard of the parish church of St
Mary in Dover aforesaid at the discretion of my said welbeloved husband and my exor hereunder named.
   Item: I will and give unto the poore of the said parish of St Mary the sum of £3 and to the poor of the parish of St James the Apostle in Dover aforesaid the sume of 40s of lawfull money of England to be distributed amongst them at the discretion of my said husband and exor within one month next after my decease. Item:
   I will and give unto my said welbeloved husband the sum of 10£ to bee paid unto him by my son hereinafter named. Item:
   I will and give unto Wm Eaton my sonne in lawe the sum of 30£, one diamond ringe and one tapestrie coverlett. Item:
   I will and direct unto John Eaton and to Nicholas Eaton my sonns in lawe the sum of 10£ apeece to bee paid unto them at the end of 3 monthes next after my decease by my exor herein named. Item: I will and give unto Sarah the wife of Bennett Hickson of the said town and parish, marriner, my welbeloved sister one silver salt, 1 silver cupp, 6 silver spoones, 1 featherbed, 1 feather bolster, 6 pair of sheets, 2 petticoats the one of redd champlet with 3 ?god laces and the other of mowhaire of a greenish colour, 1 ?diaf table cloth and 1 canvas cloth to bee delivered unto her or to her assigns within 1 monthe next after my decease.
   Item: I will and devise unto Thomas Hickson and Gibs Hickson sonnes of the said Bennett Hickson 30£ apeece (that is to say to each of them 30£ of lauful money) of England to be paid to their said father by my exor herein named for the use within 2 months next after my decease. Item:
   I will and devise unto Joane Hickson daughter of the said Bennet Hickson her exors and assigns all that my messuage or tenement with the appurtenances scituat lying and being at the peere within the libertie of the said town and parish holden by indenture of lease of the Honoble Warden and Assistant of the harbor of Dover aforesaid for ?dwei yeares yet to come and ... now in the occupation of Simon Bowden, she and they yealding and paying the yearely rent reserved for the same when and as often as the same shalbe due and keeping the same repayed and performing and keeping all and singular the Covenants, Articles and agreements on the tenants or leeses parte to bee observed, performed and kept specified or declared in the said Indenture of lease. Item:
   I will and give unto John Tyddeyman sonne of John Tyddeyman my late deceased brother the sum of 30£ of lawful money of England to bee paid unto him by my said exor within 1 weeke nexte after the end of his now apprentisehiff or at his age of 20 and 1 years if he shall not continue out the terme of his said apprentisehiff. And if it shall happen that the said John Tyddeyman shall depart this world before the end of his said apprentisehiff or age of 20 and 1 years then I will that my said exor shall well and truely pay 20£ parcel of the said 30£ unto the said Thos Hickson, Gibs Hickson and Joane Hickson or to the survivor of them to be equely devided betwixt them. And the other 10£ residue with Richd Gibbs sonne of Thos Gibbs my brother in lawe at his the said Richd his age of 20 and 1 yeares.
   Item: I will and devise unto the said Richd Gibbs the sum of 30£ of lawful money of England to be paid with the said Thos Gibbs his said father by my exor herein named for the use of the said Richd within six months next after my decease.
   Item: I will and give my lovinge Uncle Thomas Tyddeyman of Dover aforesaid Jurate 20s for a remembrance.
   To my brother in lawe Bennett Hickson the like sum of 20s for a like remembrance. And to ffrancis Rawworth, Towne Clarke of Dover 20s for a like remembrance to be paid to him and every of them within 1 month next after my decease by my exor herein named.
   Item: I will and give unto Richd Bageant, Robert Hamon, Katherine Winter and Zamack Harvey my said husbands servants 10s appeece to be paid to them and every of them within 1 month next after my decease. Item:
   I will and give unto Jane the wife of Wm Freeman 10s and to John Higham 10s to bee paid to each of them within the like time of 1 month. Item:
   I will and bequeath unto Elizabeth Smith my kinswoman 5£ which I of late lent with Thomas Rudder her sonne in lawe and which is yet by him owing with me.
   Item: I will and give unto Alice the wife of John Rolfe the sum of 10s to be paid unto her by my exor herein named and as touching all other my goods, chattels, household stuff, ready monys, debts and credits
   I will and devise the same to the said Wm Eaton my welbeloved sonne in law whom I make sole exor of this my last will and testament for the paying of my debts and legacys aforesaid, discharge of my funerall expenses and probat of this my last Will and Testament. And this giving Almighty God prayse and thanks that hee hath given me memory and strength of body and minde to effecte this my said last Will and Testament and revoking all former.
In witnes whereof I have hereunto set my hand and sign the day and yeare first above written, Joane Eaton her marke.
   Read, sealed, ..., published and declared in the presence of Cockrell Harwood, John Lamberte, Francis Raworthe.
   Having read over and ? this above written will of my well beloved wife Joane Eaton lately deceased I doe approve and allow of the same and of every parte therof for her last Will and Testament as it is now written and by her sealed and subscribed, consisting of 3 sheets of paper. In witnes whereof I hereby ... set my name with mine owne hand the sixt day of July Anno Domini 1635. Nich. Eaton subscribed in the presence of us Francis Raworth, Samuel Ferrier.
    Probatim fuit huis testament 7 Julii 1635. Coram Mr Edwardo Aldey clici Surrogate etc. Jurant Exec. Dco exor primitor jurat etc.
