Alen Marden of Beningdon in Kent, 2 Oct. 1540. To be buryed in the churche yarde of the parishe churche of Seynt George the Marter of Benyngdon. An honest preest to rede & singe in the churche of Benyndon for the helthe of my soule & all christian soules by the space of one hoe yere, Tenne marks. I will Robert my sone shall have my principall mesuage & gardens thereto that I nowe dwell in and foure peces of lande wherof the first ys called Welfeld the seconde Longefeld the thirde Bentton and the 4th Bakhousfeld and a garden and one pece of lande that Edward Hunte now holdith in ferme. Also all my parte of the mesuage & lands that I late bought of Alen Hothe and all my fee lands that I late helde of the Pryor of the churche of Caunterbury in the parisshes of Benyngdon and Byddenden. Also the half deale of 6 acres I late bought of Rychard Sym in the parish of Beddynden, also the parcells of lande calde Brosynden and two peces of Woodlande lying upon the dennes of Brosynden and Rydden and also 4 acres of woodlande lying in a woode called Susternewood in the parish of Byddenden.
Also I will that Wylliam my sone shalhave whan he comyth to his age of 26 yeres all my lands, tenements & Mylle in the parishes of Hothfeld, Westwell & Assheford. Unto Water my sone when 26 my mesuage garden & lands I late bought of Robert Fowle deceased, also a pece of lande calde Hamons conteyning 4 acres and a pece of land calde Brodefeld & another calde Welneham and all my landes caled Lincas & Dokynden and one pece of lande called Strode the which I late bought of Richard Bigge & 18 acres of woodland at Castlens Crosse in the parishe of Byddenden.
I will that Richard my sonne when 26 have all my lands & tenements in Rowynden I late bought of John Daye of Rowynden & Lawrence Daye of Benyngdon and all landes I bought of William Peyrse of Tenterden & all lands I late bought of Thomas Bigge except if he will pay me executors ten marks I will the said Thomas Bigg shalhave
ye said lands.
I will John my sone the yonger when 26 all my lands I late bought of John Moreleyn thelder of Benyngdon. Also one pece of wood called Brokewood (7 acres) and another pece of woodeland lying at Dokynden in the parish of Cranebroke of 5 acres and all those landes & tenements I bought of John Morelen the yonger in the parishe of Benynden (except he pay in1542 £30 then he shall have them again).
Eche of my said fyve sonnes shall paye unto the said Joane yerely 13s 4d & I will the said Joane my wyf shall have & occupye during her wedowhode my parlour & chamber over the said parlour, fyre & flette in my haule & kechyn & her easement in my backhouse and also to feche water at my waters where they use to feche water & to washe & to wringe & to hange her clothes at all tymes convenyent and the said Joane shall have a cowe the best she can chose & Robert my sone shall kepe her said cowe aswell in wynter as in somer. If my wyfe and my sone Richard cannot agree in my said mesauge then I will she shall have my mesuage & garden & lands that Edward Hunt holdith in ferme and 6 lode of wode brought home unto her house.
I will Joane my wyfe keepe Richard & John my twoo yonger sones unto the tyme they come to the age of 14 yeres & have 40s by yere for keping of eche of them. Also to Joane my wyfe a bedd the best she can chose and all my other instuf of household except I will to Robert my sone my bedd in the parlor that I nowe lye in.
Also to the said Robert all my Tanne Tonnes wt the ledder & hydes & all other Implements & all my tooles belonging to Copers Crafte wt all borde & tymber therto belonging. Also one cople of oxen wt all my wenys, courts and yoks and all my tanne in my housing & all the tanne that I bought of Gervays Gebon & John Geborn in Upgatewoode and all the heye that dyd growe upon the londs this yere. Also three pipe cokers and threhalf pypes.
Also I will that Water my sone shall have all the Residue of all my Syder vessells. To the maryage of Tomsyn my doughter £20 & if not maryed before she comyth to her age of 20 yeres she shall have & take the profytt of the said £20. To John Marden my sone dwelling in Caunterbury £4. To Katheryn my servaunt 6s 8d.
My executours to take to ferme all lands etc willed unto my fowre yonger sones, William, Walter, Richard & John unto the tyme they come to 26 yeres. To Joane my wyfe & Robert my sonne all my hoggs, all my poultre & all my chese. My executours to buy lands to the value of fourescore marks to thuse of my fowre yonger sones. I will that John Daye of Rowynden shall have in ferme one pece of land callyd the Feylde before the gate wt a house theruppon stonding & another pece wt a barne theruppon for terme of his lyfe paying yerely 20s.
Executours: Alexaunder Quoscheman of Cranbroke and John Roger of Byddenden. Wytnes: Stephyn Roger, Thos Bygge, John Daye, Laurencie Daie, John Quoscheman & Richard Peryman.
