William GROS - Will 16 April 1464

William Gros 16 April 1464. To the light of
the Brotherhoods of Holy Trinity & St George to each 3s 4d; to the
parish priest 12d; to John Caxton 2s; to Wm Brownflet 12d,
Wife Agnes one cow & all the store of the Inn being in my
house such as vessels of brass, tablecloths, towels, sheets, beds &
all other things there belonging to my tenement. Feoffees: John Breggis,
Andrew Bate, Robert Hough.
Thomas my son my chief tenement formerly Thomas Jan’s
to ferm, with all necessaries of the same tenement for the trade of an
innkeeper (pandoxetor) or brewer (brasiator) for 7 years, paying yearly to
Agnes my wife 5 marcs (£3.6.8); also at the end of 7 years. Thomas to
have the same tenement to ferm in like manner paying 4 marcs (53s 4d) a
year to Agnes.
Wife all my other lands & tenements for life, then the
tenement late Richard Aleyn’s to be sold & from the money a chaplain
to celebrate in the Church of Lydd for one year for my soul, parents &
benefactors etc, also to the Church one jewel (jocale) of silver that my
soul & all other benefactors be prayed for in the Church. Another
jewel of silver value 100s to the Abbot & Convent of Tintern & the
residue to buying that jewel for use in Lydd Church.
After death of wife Agnes my chief tenement formerly Thomas
Jan’s with all necessaries belonging to the same for the occupation of
an innkeeper or brewer to be sold & my son Thomas buy the same paying
for the same in 26 years, each third year a portion of the money &
when all the money is received then six marcs (£4) to son Richard, to son
Laurence 4 marcs (53/8d) to Joan daughter of John Gros my son 20/- &
the residue to pious uses.
But the residue of my lands & tenements after the death
of Agnes my wife to remain to Thomas, Richard & Laurence my sons &
to their heirs for ever. Executors: John Breggis, Andrew Bate, Robert
Howgh with Thomas my son.
