Stephen CHEESEMAN Snr - Will 30
April 1489

Stephen Cheeseman senior 1 January 1489. To
be buried in the Chapel of St Mary near the grave of Iden my wife. To the
high altar for tithes 3s 4d & to each parish clerk 6d; the Brotherhood
of Holy Cross & of St George 8d each.
To Joan the daughter of Stephen my son £10. Wife Isabelle
£10, three silver cups, 3000 billets, my red cloak, also the red girdle
for life; then the girdle to the repair of the nave of the church.
Son Stephen my best padded breeches (bombicinium) &
second salet (helmet) best cloak, second girdle of murray (ie reddish
purple or mulberry) colour with silver mounts, second cloak, six silver
cups & a maser.
Son Peter my best girdle of murray colour with silver mounts,
second padded breeches & salet, cloak, six silver cups and a maser.
Residue of household things to be divided into four parts viz
(1) to wife Isabella (2) son Peter (3) son Stephen & (4) disposed for
my soul. Executors: sons Peter & Stephen with James Bate supevisor.
Feoffees – son Peter & James Bate.
Son Stephen my chief messuage with a garden, from the broken
post there beside the kitchen as far as the pales standing there alongside
of the post, & so fronting three unto another post standing beside the
stable; one acre of land at the place called Westbroke towards the land of
Richard Fytypace esquire to the southeast; three acres recently bought
from Simon Makett situated at Dengemarsh; 3 acres & a half recently
obtained from Herbert Finche; 3 rods of land at Legye & one kydell
with cabin there standing as the marks & bounds show & to his
heirs for ever.
Son Peter the tenement in which he now lives 4s yearly rent
from half an acre formerly Stokhams near the tenement of Laurence Gros;
one acre and half at Westbroke, 5 acres obtained from Richd Aylewyn, one
acre & half called Esmerett and 2 acres called Thurdrave at Dengemarsh
& to his heirs for ever.
Roger the son of Stephen to have when 21 my tenement with
lands at Dengemarsh also the land there called Northnover, & ten acres
at Southmede & to his heirs for ever but if Roger die before 21 then
to be sold & the money disposed for my soul, Iden my wife, father
& mother etc & other works of charity. Witnesses: Thos Buntyng,
John Adowne, John Wulvyn.
