Henry Bate (in printed calendar he is called
‘or Bath’) 29 May 1478. To each of the parish clerks 12d; to each of
the Brotherhoods of Holy Trinity, St John the Baptist & St George 20d
& to the Mass of Jesus 6s 8d. Agnes, Margarete, Joan & Marione my
daughters each 20 marcs (£13.6.8) to their marriage.
Wife Agnes all my household things, 28 ewes & the half of
my lands in the custody of Wm Clyve, 10 cows, one mare, two sprot-nets, 8
acres of corn growing at Nordlade & all oats & barley growing in
Oxynlese at Langport.
John, Thomas & George the sons of James Bate 20s/-;
Juliane daughter of Andrew Bate 6/8; Agnes wife of John Parker my kinsman
6/8; John and William sons of Thos Bate junior 13/4; Margaret dau: of
Simone Bate 6/8, & Margaret wife of John Clark of Rye 6/8.
To my daughters my best girdle with silver mounts that
formerly belonged to John Bate my father, also another green girdle, but
if my wife be with a son, he shall have the best girdle. Feoffees: Andrew
Bate, John Breggys, John son of John Bate junior upon the Ripe and James
Bate, & they to sell my messuages in which Laurence Hanson tailor now
dwells & with the money buy a chalice value £5 for the church, &
the residue of the money to buy one Crismatory for the church, to pray for
my soul, parents & all the faithful departed.
To Richard Cowper a certain messuage with appurts in which
the same Richard dwells. John Kempe 3 rods of land that formerly was Wm
Makettys situated at Westbroke. Thomas Caneston? 3 acres of land. Thomas
son of Andrew Bate to have & hold 2½ acres of land at Dajehnwall that
formerly belonged to Sir Walter Moyle Knight.
Wife Agnes for life my chief tenement with appurts (formerly
Richard Fordys) one acre & a rod of land formerly belonging to Richard
Glover, 2 acres of land late James Lucas’, one acre & a rod formerly
Richard Burston’s, 10 acres late Wm Wanstall’s called the Rype, 10
acres formerly Robert Chambers. After death of wife Agnes the chief
tenement to my boy, but if he die before 18 then at the death of Agnes my
daughter Agnes to have the messuage formerly
Thomas Brokye & to her heirs, but if she die under age
then to the other children & if they all die under age then to my
heirs. To each of my daughters 20 acres of land when of age, if they die
then the 80 acres to that son if wife Agnes is pregnant. After the death
of Agnes all remain to that son but if no son to my other daughters.
