John Motesfont, Vicar "In the name of
God Amen, the 25th day of Septr in the year of the Lord 1420
– I, John Motesfont Vicar of Lydd, ill in body but well in mind, make my
will as follows. First I bequeath my soul to God Almighty, the Blessed
Virgin Mary, and all the Saints and my corruptible body to be buried in a
grave in most holy (sacrosancte) mother church."
To the College of St Mary Winton (ie New College) in Oxford
my books both old and new and one Book of Innocent, which Master John
Norton, has at Oxford; also a Book of Surgery & a folio "de
Residus". To Master John Norton all my Repertories which he has in
his charge with a chest and other. To Dom. John Chynnok 6s 8d; to the
parish church of Lydd five marcs (66-8d) for buying one Antiphonal; to the
wife of John Baker my best cloak with a hood to be chosen by her; to my
servant Robert my russet cloak & one pair of sheets; & to John my
servant 20d. To Walter Type a piece of cloth of which he may make himself
a cloak. Master Wm Stapilford a tractate & folio "Rex Dominus"
also an incomplete book called "Magistri Historiam" with a
genealogy of the Old Testament. To Wm Quarle precentor (cantor) of
Crythyngton my dagger & best belt. To my laundress my long cloak of
bright colour; to Idone Englond a long cloak of deep red, and to John
Broke a short cloak of deep red, lined. To Dom Andrew Aylewin one book
called "Pupilla Oculi".
The residue after paying debts to my executors & each to
have 20s for their labour viz Dom. Andrew Aylewin, priest, John Baker
& Richard Bromley of Lydd, to dispose for my soul.

He died 6 November 1420 and his grave on the south side of
the chancel has a fine brass representing him in academical robes &
with marginal verses.
