William Cheryton
borne in the parrishe of Cheryton in Warwickshire & nowe enhabyting
in the parrishe of Lydde in Kent, being in good helth etc 16 January
(1544?). My soule to Almightie God & my bodye to xpen????? buriall
and for the discharge of my soule agenst God because that I being a
mortall man and have soulde certeyne landes in Warwickshire to the
yerely vallue of eight pounds & tenne shillings of right belonging
to one John Cheryton of the parishe of Hemyocke in Devonshire & with
the money I have purchased of Sr Edwarde Boughton knighte certeyne lands
& tenements in the saide parrishe of Lydd & thereabouts.
Therefore I the saide Wm Cheryton by this my last will & testament
of myn owen handewryting doo make & ordeyne John Cheryton, citezen
& marchaunte of the Cytie of Exeter in Devonshire sonne & heire
of the above named John Cheryton of Hemyocke my sole executor to have
all my forsaide purchased landes & tenements for ever, excepte my
howse wherein I now dwell wt a cottage in Lydde the whiche I gave unto
Ellen my wiffe before the making hereof.
Also I geve to the vicar of the parishe churche of Lydde for all
forgotten tithes 20d. An honest preste to pray for my soule & Stevn
Cheryton my father & mother & all xpen????? soules to kepe there
foure solempne dyridges att foure soundry tymes and at every dyrige the
Curat & 6 pristes, giving to the Curat every tyme 12d & to every
other prist 8d, & to the Clarke & Sexten at my executors
discretion according to the custome & to the parrishe for theire
ornaments & for their bells & for theire foure dyeriges 20s and
to all the pore people that ys in the parishe of Lydde a half penny loke
(sic) or a halfepenny in monye they comying to the saide dyridges &
masses to pray for the saide soules.
Resydue to be equally devyded & my wiffe Ellyn to have the moytie
thereof & the other for my soule & all xpen????? soules. The 16
Januarye that I wrott the will & it was not seeled & my name
written till was the 12th of Marche Anno RR Henrici octavi
XXXIIII to & then I took it to kepe to Thomas More in the fins of
John Cycell, John Rosse, Wm Ap Rice & I desired the same Thomas that
if that he harde that I were departed out of this worlde than then he
shoulde delyver yt to the undernamed John Cheryton of Exeter myne
execatour. By me William Cheryton.
Proved 11 Nov 1546 by John Cheryton executor. Sentence 26 June 1548 (1
Edward VI) in cause between John Cheryton executor & Margaret Watts,
sister of the deceased. [PCC 19 Alen]
