JOHN GOLDWELL thelder of
the parish of Bydenden [Biddenden] in Kent, Gent. 1 June 1557 (3 & 4
Philip and Mary) of my landes in the Townes and parishes of Grete Charte,
Olde Rompney, Medlaye and Seinct Lawrence Pounltney, Pevington, Egerton,
Charynge and Esshetissford in Kente.
To William Goldwell my second sonne my lease for terme of 9 peece of
ferme landes called Hoks in Greate Charte the which John Hills or other
of Greate Charte now hathe to ferme and after decease the said lands
called Hooks to his heirs and for default to John Goldwell myne eldest
sonne, on condicon that the said William paie to Margery my wief duringe
her lief £10 halfyerely to be paid and to Marione my daughter at her
mariage 100 mrks.
To George Goldwell my thirde sonne all my landes in Olde Rompney, Medley
and Seinct Laurence Pountney wt in the County of Kente (sic) the which
Stephyn Affright nowe hath to farme and to his heires male &e with
remaynder to Richard Goldwell my youngest sonne and remainder to John
Goldwell thelder of Bydynton and myne eldest heirs males. The said
George to paie Margery my wief £6 for life half yerely to be paid and
to Richard Goldwell my youngest sonne £6 yerely and in default the said
lands to Margery my wief for lief she to paie to Richard Goldwell my
youngest sonne £6 and therewith shall fynde the seid Richard to schole
to learne to reade write and gramer and other learnyng and science
untill he come to the age of 21.
To Margery my wief all my landes and tenements in parishes and townes of
Pevyngton, Egerton and Charinge in Kent during her lief on condicion she
doo fynde to Richard myne youngest sonne sufficient and honest rayment,
meate and drynke and also learninge at schole to read write and gramer
wt other learnings and scyence until he come to 21 yeres.
All myne landes and tenements in Esstotisford in the Northe Lane there
shalbe solde and the money to John Goldwell the yonger my sonne towardes
the advauncement of his lyvinge when he shall come oute of his
apprentizehed.
In the name of God, Amen, I John Goldwell of the parish of Bydinden,
gentillman, make myne laste will and testament. To be buried where it
shall please God in xpian buriall. To the parson of the parishe church
of Bydinden 6s. 8d. To the parson of Tenterden ---. Towards the
reparacion of the parishe church of Bydynden £3. Towardes the
advauncement of the stony waye in the highe streate in Bydynden leadinge
bitwene Hykynfold gate and Thorn Castell forge £3. To 10 poore maydens
mariages of the same parish £3. 6. 8. to euery 6s. 8d.
To myne two doughters Margarett and Marye a cheste bounde with iron with
all in it that is to saye: a Bason and an ewer four chardgers 12
platters 12 dishes 12 sawsers 6 poryngers a quarte potte a pynte potte a
chamber potte and a Colender all of pewter three litell brasse pannes a
chapendishe wt a foote thereto of latten tenne candelsticks of latten 2
little rounde spilles of iron, to be equally delyuered unto them by my
executor on their mariage or at 21 (also beds, bolsters &e).
To Margarett my daughter myne beste gold rynge wth a turkas stone that
was Richard Treshers graundefathers. To Marye myne daughter a golde ryne
with a crispell stone.
To John Goldwell myne eldest sonne a cheste with 3 streaks of iron uppon
the lydde wt 2 chardgers &e., a coverlett of Imagery lined wth
Canvas, a littell leathe chaire a bowe of ewe a seeler of a Tester of
yelowe damaske and blew satten &e a Kervid joyned cheste in the
chapell chamber a fyne christening sheete with a seame therin wrought
with gold [also sheets, tables, pillows &e] a littell hoope rynge of
golde graven with in with ‘Goldwell’, the hanging in the hall and
the Targett with the Armes of Englond; a lyttell rounyng candelstick wth
the scokett hanging upon the speare in the hall, a bibell, all myne
bookes of Statutes.
To myne daughter Anne the saied John Goldwells wief a rynge of gold like
a crowne of thorne, a bracelet of golde with jacent stones, a paire of
beades of small currall gauded with beads of gold and an edge of perle.
To Margery myne wief £20, a rynge of gold with a jacent stone and a
littell rynge of golde that is broken and was hir weddynge rynge, a
paire of hookes of gold and another paire of hookes of siluer, two paire
of beades wth gaudies of siluer thone paire of Corall and the other of
white awmber, a cofer of Sprewswood callid her rayle cofer, a chiste of
waynescotte that is in the chamber over the new parlour and a chiste of
waynescotte that rose sheats were wonte to lye therein [and more
household stuff].
To myne seruaunts 6s. 8d. above their wages.
Residue to myne executor for deades of charite.

To William Goldwell my second sonne page 36 a gowne of pewke furred with
foynes, &e. To George my third sonne a littell rynge of gold with a
Turkas therin. To William Sumynge my sonne in lawe a ringe of gold with
a great stone that was William Summyngs his father.
My landes in Rayneham in Kent callyd Makeland which -------- Howman nowe
holdeth to farme shalbe sold and the money to my two daughters the daye
of their mariage.
On 6 May 1558 a commission to Margerie Goldwell relict, John and William
Goldwell sons of deceased to administer goods &e.
