JOHN FLETE of Bedenden
[Biddenden?] in Kent, 8 August 1556, 3 &4 Philip and Mary. To be
buried in the earthe where it pleaseth God. At my buriall fyve or sixe
poundes to the poore. To Margaret my wife one half of all my stuffe
cauled in the vulgar tonge householde stuffe, except bedsteddels &e
in the gessen chamber over the parlor and other half between my sonnes
when 21 or at mariage. To wife Margaret £80, three of my best kyne and
best gelding or mare that shall remayne after my harriotts are paid
according to the lawe and 5 seames of wheat and barlie malte.
To euerie of my men seruaunts and women seruaunts and to euerie ladd
dwelling in my howse 3s. 4d. To my three sisters 20s. apeece and to
eueryeof their children 20s.
To euerie of the sonnes of William Flete my brother 40s. and euerie of
his doughters 20s. To my brothers wif 20s.
To mending of the high waies betwene the bowse I nowe dwell in and
Stubbe Crosse beyondes Lasshinders where the foote waye turnes to
Bedersden £6.
To my sonne William Flete my golde ringe that hath my marke, at the age
of 21.
To all my saide four sonnes all my siluer plate. If they all die then to
my doughter Alice. Residue to my executors for my debts and bequests and
to take profitts &e until my sonnes come to 21.
Item I will that Margaret my wife shall have the keping of my said
children and she to putt all my sonnes to schole vntill they be of the
seuerall ages of 15 yeres and then put them to suche honest occupacons
as they shalbe apte and willing to lerne.
My executors shall not sell the implements of my workhouse nor the
hardills nor the tampers nor sell my Iron beame in the storehouse nor
the weights nor the beame and waights in the collinge chamber nor the
coopes that serve for the pultrie for I give them to him that shall have
the howse after my decease.
I ordeyne Flete (sic) my brother and William Flete my sonne executors of
each to have £6 and my wife ouerseer. Written wt myne owne hand and
setto my seale. By me John Flete.
Last Will: Margaret my wife one yerely rent of £20 and if she will not
be contented wt this my gifte of £20 a yere but she will have the half
of the profitts of my landes as the custom of the Countie will give her
so long as she is vnmaried then my gifte to my saide wife of £20 is
voyde.
To William Flete my elder sonne all landes and woodes in Charing and
Westwell of Lyttle Charte and Pevington in occupacon of my fermers and
my two mylles cauled Fordemill.
To Thomas Flete all my lands and woods in Halden and Bedersden and the
howse and land I bought of William Roper that goeth for £3 11s. clere
and the howse and land I bought of Bone and padyam that Richard Stedman
doth hier and ?£110.
To John Flete my 3rd sonne my howse and land I nowe dwell in
the three feldes I bought of Steven Harlackenden and all the woods and
lands I bought of Laurence Daye and Marden (sic) and £240.
To my sonne Samuel Flete my 4th sonne all my annuyties and
yerely rents save one fee symple that was bought of Rooper and £170.
My four sonnes shall paie their mother of my lands £5 a pece all her
life.
I give to my doughter Alice the wife of Robert Gibben -------- (not
stated).
Proved 9 December 1558 by William Flete ‘senioris’ executor.
On 12 July 1560 a Commission to William Flete ‘junior’ of goods not
