WILLIAM BROKHILL of Apuldre
in Kent, 25 December 1519. To be buryed within the chauncell where my
last wif lyethe.
My executors to pay and perform all such bequestes as I am bounde to
paye for the last will of my brother John Brokhill viz a yerly obitte
for John Brokhill in the church of Mydle the 4th of Merch for
15 yeres and to the said church of Mydle to buye a cope and a chalice of
silver and gilte £6, and I give more to the said cope and chalice £6.
To seint Stephens Churche for my broder according to my promise to the
edificacion of the Rode loft there £4.
To Anthony Colman £6 percell of £40 I gave to my suster of my broder
is goodes.
Richard Corks £3. 6. 8. of my said broder in bequest.
I thynke in my conscience I have £66. 13. of the goodes of my said
Broder of the which I gyve towarde the makyng and buylding of the Rode
loft at Midley and to other necessaries for the same church £10. I gyve
to Old Romney church a cope of the value of £7.
I gyve £10 for a Rode loft in Lyde church towards to be doon or made.
To Yve churche of my said brothers goodes for the bye lede therewt the
some of £10.
To the churche of Apuldore £20 and of my goodes £10 to bye therwt a
goodly sute of copes to the honour of god.
To high altar of the said church of Lyde 6s. 8d. and of Midley and
Brokland and to the reparacion of the said church 20s.
To thirteen poore nedy men 13 gownes of Friese redy made, they to hold
and bere my torches and tapers at my burying. A trentall and 5 seames of
wheyte to be baken at euery of the said tymes, 2 seames of malte and 4
bushells of ootes and an ox to be Kylde at euery tyme to the value of
26s. 8d., fyve weders and a calf at the same tyme, and if it happen to
galle to be vpon a fisshe daye then to bestowe 46s. 8d.
To 20 poore maidens marriages £6. 13. 4., 6s. 8d. a peece, 10 of
Apuldore 5 of Lyde 5 in Old Romeny and Mydley.
To amending the evill and comberous wayes bitwene Old Romeny and Lyde
£4. To amendment of the waye betwene John Frebodies dore and the stile
in Apulldore Courte £4.
To Johane Gounder hir owne kyne and twoo heffers gyving mylke and 20s.,
and also to Marion Garade 26s. 8d. and to Thomesyn 26. 8d. To Clement
Browne 26s. 8d. To Laurence Gounder, William Yaldiche and Laurence Heuer
20 owes which 60 owes be in the hands of Tallowe to ferme.
To euery servant at my decease 20s. To the sonne of Henry a Wode 40s. To
euery child of Mighell Boumassell and Steppyngs children beying by
Johane Worsparake and to euery of Colyns children beying by Brokhells
doughter of Lyde to euery one 3s. 4d.
To William Quylter thre of my best gownes. To Jane Quylter my doughter
myne old Guyldyng called Skneppyn. To William Cobbe my best worsted
doublet &e and a bonet of 2s. 6d. To William Horne my father in lawe
twoo of my trotting guyldings.
A prest to syng for me and my father and mothers soules in the church of
Apuldre and to receive £6. 13. 4.
To the exhibicon of Sir Thomas Coke beying at scole in Oxforthe 53s. 4d.
To Jamys Whatman a seme of whete. To John Brixe 20s., John Clerke 20s.,
Augustyn Dyne 10s., William a Vane 13s. 4d. To Benett 10s. and to Henry
Eliot 3s. 4d. To William Cobbes my servant my guelding called Bayard,
henxsten, sadell, brydall and all that perteynes to hym. To Lytull Agnes
Bonevessell 20s. To Ingram a Vane 53s. 4d. To William Robyn and Henry
Robyn the sonnes of Philipp Robyn 10s. To the heire of Baldewyn if there
be but oon heire 13s. 4d.
To the amending and reparacion of the stepull of Kenarton churche 20s.
Residue to Johanne and Jane my doughters and I will that Johanne Quylte
my doughter shal have hir parte that is to saye the halfyndell of all my
said goods.
My executors shall yerely accompte wt Maister John Baker for the other
haf which is my doughter Jane is parte and my doughter Jane my yonger
doughter to have her parte at 17 yeres of age.

Reigge a cowe or 8s. To Danyell of Newchurch a cote. To Symon Godderde
oon hundreth ewis at myghelmas. To George Colman a horse called Ansby.
Last will: 25 December 1519 reherssed personally to John Edolf of Rye,
Jamers Swan and Thomas Swan of Lyde, Robert Edolf of Brenset and John
Epse of Old Romoney the yonger my feoffees of lands &e in parishe of
Apuldore, Kenarton, Brensett, Brokhellam, Snave, Ivechirche, Old Romoney,
Pownteney, Midle and Lyde. My feoffes to suffer my executors to take the
profits &e vnto the tyme Jane my yongest doughter come to age of 17,
except landes I nowe have in my possession to the vse of my sister Agnes
Colman in the parishes of Lyde and Old Romony, that is to say a Tenement
called the George with an other lytill tenement therto next adjoining.
Also a tenement that Richard Vmffrey nowe dwells in a messuage at
Dyngemersshe beying parcell of my said suster Agnes joynter. Also all
the landes there late purchased of John Gregory of Douor callid Bakers.
Also a tenement and certen landes late purchased of Henry Howe. Also a
pese of land called Thorn crofte, also 3 acres now leten to ferme in the
hands of lytill John Bate. Also all my landes within the
said parishe of Lyde and libertie of the Fyve Ports nowe being in my
possession.
My feoffees shall enfeoffe 6 or 8 inhabitants dwelling in the parish of
Apuldore in all the foresaid landes and tenements in the said parisshe
of Lyde and lybertie of the Five Ports and with the profits to find an
honest preste which can syng his playn songe and can well tetche gramer
to syng and say dyvyne service in the churche of Apuldore for the helthe
of my soule and all cristen soules and to receive £8 at the frests of
the Annunciation of our Lady and Seint Mighell the Archangel and I will
that the same prest for the said salary of eyght pounds shall kepe the
Quyre euery Sonday and holiday in the said church of Apuldore in
helpying dyvyne service and vpon the work daye contenually at Apuldore
aforesaid shall teche Gramer and kepe a gramer scole provided if the
issues, revenues &e of my said landes and tenements lying in Lyde
aforesaid above the reparacion and all other charges doo nor will not
extende yerely to the some of £8 and 40s. clerely above all charge then
I will my said feoffees shall infeoffe the said six or eight men
parishens of Apuldore in my pryncipall mesuage or tenement wt in the
lybertie of Old Romney and in all my lands wt theire appurtenances there
to fulfill the some of £8. Provided also that the further order and
assurance of the said landes I will and fully remytte all the ordyng,
reformation and accomplishment therof to John Hales Esq. and John Baker
gentilman and they shal be rewarded for theire labour about the
presisses.
And I will that the said prest and scole maister from tyme to tyme
shalbe named elected and chosen by the Vicar of Apuldore for the tyme
being and by the said feofees and theire heires and assignes infeoffed
in the said landes and tenements in Lyde and by the same vicar and
Feoffes the said prest so named and elected shalbe presented to the
Priour of Cristchurch in Canterbury and if the same priour fynde hym
abill in conyng and in good maner then the same prest to be sette into
the same service and salary. And after he be soo sett if he doo not his
duete in the church and also in techyng of scolers or if he doo misordr
hym self and kep not good Ruele, the knowledge wherof hade then I will
that he shalbe warned to kepe better ordre and rule by the said vicar of
Apuldore and after such warning if he do not amende the said defaulte
then he shalbe put oute of his service and an other prest to be chosen.
If the vicar and parisshens being feoffees by neclygence, slougth or
wilfulness do suffer the said service to be voyde by the space of half a
yere the next of my blodde shall enter into all the lands and tenements
for euer.
A tenement Marten Beuerley nowe holdeth to ferme I will my feoffes
suffer William Parke to take all the issues unto Jane my doughter come
to 18.
Oon mesuage and all my lands called Phylipp Robyns and 3½ acres lying
at Eldertonnes Mnsyng my executors shall take issues unto tyme Jane my
doughter is 18, and with the money to fynde William a Grobe and Thomas a
Grobe to scole. My feoffees a non after my decease to delyuer to John
Brokhill a yerely rent of 40s. out of my landes late purchased of Thomas
Godard in parishes of Brokhilland, Brensett, and Fayrefeld to the vse of
the said John Brokhill to fynde hym to scole duryng his nonage.
An anuytie of 13s. 4d. I have of the graunte of Andrewe Blakbourne out
of lands lying in the parish of Ebben(y) and Stone I give to Alice Watts
my servaunt.
Oon half of yerely profytts to Johanne Quilter my doughter wife of
William Quilter and £10 yerely to William Hoorne Gent. for the kepyng
and fynding of the said Jane my doughter and the residue of the money of
the halfyn deale yearly to my executors unto the tyme Jane my doughter
be 17.
Also where my suster Agnes Colman wif to Antony Colman and late wif to
my brother John Brokhill holdeth for lyfe the more part of the landes in
Lyde which I have before assigned and willed to the exhibicion of the
said prest and to teche a gramer scole at Apuldore my feoffes with the
adivse of John Hales and John Baker as sone as they conveniently maye
condecende and aggree wt the said Antony and Agnes to paye them som
certeyn of money yerely duryng the lif of the said Agnes so that the
said landes &e may be put in feoffment as is abouesaid and if they
cannot agree then the said some to be taken from the said other landes
by me assigned for the use of my doughters. So that I always will the
said prest to saye dyvine service and teche gramer scole at Apuldore as
is before said shall in as short tyme as can be after my decease be hade
and provided.
My executors with my goodes and other thyngs shall purchase some
convenient house of shopp in Apuldore for the said gramer scole to be
kepte and children to be taught, in the strete of Apuldore as nere to
the churche as they can so provide for it and a state to be made in fee
sympel to the said six or eight persons to that vse with the said other
landes.
