JOHN BAKER seruaunt in
Christe Churche within the Citie of Canterbury, 31 March 1530.
To be buried wt in the churche of Christ beforesaid where as it shall
please my lord Priour.
£4 to be devided amongst the brethern monks of Saint Augustynes and 4
marks amongst the brethern monks of Christ churche.
To high aultar of the Priory of Bilsington 3s. 4d. To the same Priory
£8 to be laide vpon londes and 8 or 10 men infeoffed in the same and
the yerely profits payed to the said Priour and Convent and the priour
to have nomore for his parte but double that oon of his brethern
shalhave and to kepe a solemp dirige &e and if it be not kept then
the lands to the vse of Thomas Baker of Halden.
To high altar of parish church of Halden 3s. 4d.
To Alexaunder Osbolton brother to Joane Osbolton late my servant all my
best bedde with the hanging and tester and siluer spone and 10s. To
Katheryn wife of John Gybbes of the parish of Saint George Canterbury my
drynking maser. To Nicholas Hare of parish of Willesborough my best
Russet gaberdyne furred with fox. To Thomas Baker of Halden my secunde
Gaberdyn &e. To Nicholas Batkyn of Willisborough my thirde. To the
wife of Robert Philip of
the parish of Saint Mildreds in Canterbury 10s. and my secunde Coverlet
of Tappestrye worke above all suche money as she owith me vpon pledges
as my boke of detts will shewe.
To Sir William Edway chanon at Moots Fontt 6s. 8d.
Residue except £10 which is to be receyved of Mr. Thomas Hardds I give
to John Jenkyns, merchaunt Taillour of London, to Thomas Astyn of
Sellyng next Boughton vnder the Bleu and to Henry Scott of Halden and to
Jamys Peers servant in Saint Austyns whiche said foure men I do make myn
executors and my lord prior of Christ Church in Canterbury their
overseer.
To Henry Clerk of Byddenden sumtyme my servant 3s. 4d. To Nicholas sonne
of John Fisshe grocer in Canterbury an angell noble of golde. All such
money as shall be received of Maister Thomas Hardds gentilman for the
annuyte sold to him out of 31 acres of land in the parish of Hards
[Hardres] I lately sole to him and before that I bought it of Thomas
Woode of Eleham, cowper, I will it be paid to Thomas Astyn, or other my
executors, to be spent in lands to be infeoffed for the fynding of an
honest brethered prest to singe in the church of Halden. I do give my
best coverlet to Katheryn wife of Symond Taillour of Byddenden and
doughter of Thomas Foster of Cranebroke.
Last will: I will that Maister Christofer Hales, John Lucas and John
Lucas the yonger, Henry Scott, John Jenkyn, merchaunt Taillour of
London, Thomas Baker of Halden and William Baker his sonne with all
other my feofees of all my lands in Halden and other in Kent, Canterbury
and Sussex, suffer the churchwardens of Halden to receyve towards the
fynding of an honest bretherede priest of Jesus there to singe and say
mattyns, masse and evynsonge with other divine service within the same
church at all tymes and twyce a yere a solemp dirige and masse of
Requiem for the soules of my Father William Baker, Johane his wife for
my soule and all my brethern and susters [when feoffes die then others
to be chosen of the principal men of substance of that parish by the
advice of the Lord Abbott of Saint Augustynes and Maister parson for
that tyme being]. And in defaulte the said landes to stand to the vse of
Thomas Foster of Cranebroke and Elizabeth his wife and they to doo an
yerely obite.
As towchyng my house and lands in Burwasshe in Sussex I bought of Sir
Martyn Robert parson of Halden the yerely profits to be receyved by
Henry Scott and other his cooperteners to be paid in the churche of
Halden vpon the awter of Saint Anne viz 10/-s. and at euery fest of
Easter to be geven to fyve of the moost pourest persones dwelling in the
same parish 4d., the rest in diriges &e. And after the terme of
yeres then the tenement to my cosyn Thomas Baker. [The parson or other
prest is not to be Brothered Prest but an other prest is to be found].
I will Maister Christofer Hales the King’s attourney that nowe is,
John Lucas, Thomas Scott of Hawkeherst and Thomas Austyn of Sellyng and
my Lorde Priour of Christ Church in Canterbury to advise and have the
chief nomination in executing of the same. Perme Johem Baker manu
