Comptroller (contrarotulator) f the town and marches of Cales, 26 December
1523. To be buried within the church of the blessed Mary the Virgin of the
Order of Carmelite Friars within the choir before the high altar of the
same church next the body of Anne late my wife, in the town of Cales, if I
die in the said town or marches of the same. To the works of the church of
the blessed Mary for licence to be buried there 20s. To
the high altar of Bocton Malherbe in Kent 20s. [so far in Latin]. Item I
will and bequeth to the
churchwerks of Saint Nichas 10s. and to be Resurresction in that church
10s. To Saint George inor lady church 10s. To pour people at my burying in
money and bred £5. to euery ij prsones a brasse penny 11d. ob. To freres
ofservaunts in Caunterbury for 2 Trentalls 40s.
My sonne Edwarde shall fynde one honest prest to synge in the churche of
Bocton Malherbe by the space of 20 yeres. To frere Hans subprior of the
White Freres in Calais to syng for Anne my wife one hole yere after hir
decesse £5. 6. 8. To my doughter Mary to hir mariage £100, £60 in redy
money which is redy in a bagge for her and for the residue £40 I will
that she shalhave the two serplers of wolle stonding in my wolle house at
Calais whiche ij serplers I bought for her purposly and they dyd cost me
at the first bying £42. To the said doughter Mary the cheyne of gold wt a
crosse of gold to the same that was my
wifs.
To my doughter Margaret the lady Marques Dorsset my Ryng of gold with a
Turkes, to pray for me. To my sonne Edward all my harnesse complete as
well for my self as for my folks that I have in Caleis with all suche
Crossebowes handegounes, javelens and halbards as I have
there. All that cloth of siluer which was bought for a coote for me and
the grene velvet also shalbe made by myn executours ina Cope or other
vestment orells in awter clothes and I soo geve theym to the high awter in
the church of Bocton Malherbe and also that the ymage of the Trinitie to
be enbrowdred thereuppon.
To my nevewe Sir William Baker that is at Lovayn towards his exhibicion yf
he do contynue at his lernyng there 10 marcs.
I ordeyn my sonne Edward Wotton myn hole executor to paye my debts &e.
First I geve to my said sonne for the said entent my chayne of golde with
a crosse newe made weying in all xxj ouncs and di. of fyne golde or
thereabouts; all my plate of siluer and siluer and gilt except suche
parcell of plate assigned in this my present testament; also all suche
sumes of mony as shalbe due to me at my decesse too my ordinary wags for
me and my company in Calleis and that shall be due for myn Annuytie and
fee oute of theschequer of Calais paide vpon the wolle beame at the day of
my decesse, also all suche sumes of money as shall be due to me by Thomas
Partriche, Recyvor of all my lands of the Rents and Revenues, also £24.
16. whiche my Fermor Harryes at Bocton Malherbe hath in store of myn, and
all suche shiffe of housholde as I have in my howse at Caleis and in my
placs at Bocton Malherbe and at Paddillisworth.
Residue to my said sonne Edward, except a psalter boke which was my
fathers written and lymoned wt god, which I redemed of the parishe of
Saint Dunston in London, whiche boke I geve to the Parishe churche of
Bocton Malherbe in Kent. Provided that I will my sonne Edward and all
others heirs of him and of me to come hereafter shalhave their pleasurs to
rede or say in the same psalter at their pleasures, that is to sey within
the same church oonly and noo where ells.
Last will: 26 December 1523. My feoffees Sir William Scot and Sir Edward
Gildford Knyghts William Horne, of Hoorne, Esquier and others my feoffees
shall deluer a state of and in the hole maner of Bocton Malherbe, all
those londes nowe called Wotton landes, Powsynes, Southpark, Hames, a
park, Wodysden Grovetts and a medowe I purchased of Hugh Badnor lying next
to the Water Mylle at Bocton with all lande, woode &e I have by
purchase or inheritaunce in parishes of Bocton Malherbe, Lenham and
Heryettisham and forth wt also the manor of East Farborne and a parcell of
Rent paide by Safry Stonehowse or his heires out of the lands called
Calcotts forthwith also almaner of londes, water mylles &e services
and custumes vnto the said manor of Bocton Malherbe, vnto the said Edward
myn eldest sonne. And for defaute of heirs vnto my son Sir Nicholas Wotton,
prest, during his naturall lyfe only and then to George my sonne [all the
lands to reamin whole and undivided].
My feoffees shall deluier a state in the lordship or manor of Thornham and
in my tenement called Bordynhous in the hundred of Middelton and all suche
landes, woods &e in Chestlett vnto my said sonne Edward [remainder as
before] and in default to my doughters in fee taile and for lack of issue
to my suster Philip Combirland, my suster Tomasyn Baker and to suster
Alice Chayne according to the last wille of my fader Nicholas Wotton.
After the decesse of my doughter in lawe Dorathe Wotton nowe wife vnto my
said sonne Edward the manor of Bayhouse and Combes in Essex and all landes
&e I have in Essed vnto my said sonne Edward [remainder as before].
[If goods not sufficient to perform will and specially priest to sing in
Bocton Malherbe or son Edward is negligent] feoffees to levye vppon my
manor of Paddillsworth and Pottymys and upon the manor of Booscombe and
all such landes as I have in Cheryng and Westwell purchased of Hatche and
vpon the 13s. 4d. of annuytie pruchased of John Lachynden in Bydenden, the
sume of 200 mrcs sterling.
After decesse of my said doughter Dorathe nowe the wife of my sonne
Edward, the manor of Wardons in Egerton to remayne to my sonne Edward.
Also the manor of Sherifyscote in the Ile of Thanet and all lands &e
in Ile of Thanet which were my fathers Nicholas Wotton or myn vnto my iij
sonnes Edward, Sir Nicholas the prest and George.
My feoffees shall deliuer a state of an in the manor of Chilton besids
Syttingborne and all other lands &e wt in the hundred of Middelton
except only my tenement called Boiderhouse and of and in my manor of
Wytherst vnto my iij sonnes, in fee taile for euer as gavill kynde lands.
If all dye, as God defende, then to my suster Alice nowe the wife of
Humfrey Cheyney for lyf and to reamyn vnto my nevewe John Cheyney hir
sonne.
