JOHN POKYLL senior of Berghstede [Bearsted] in Kent, 29 May 1483. To be buried in the churchyard of the parish church of Holy Cross of Berghstede. To reparation of the said church 20s. I leve a lb of wax for one light standing before St. John Baptist above the altar in the church aforesaid yearly for 20 years. To the light of the Holy Cross before the Crucifix in the said church 8d. To the light of Blessed Mary there 8d., of Blessed Katerine there 8d., of the Holy Trinity 4d.
I leave to the work (fabrice) of a Rodelofte there five marks. I leave to a noyous way called Pakstreete 3s. 4d. I leave to a noyous way called Prydford 20d.
I will if the Abbot and Convent of Boxley will pay me all the debts they owe me they shall have as a legacy 6s. 8d. I leave for an honest secular chaplain for a quarter of a year to celebrate for me, my parents and friends 33s. 4d. To the Carmelite Friars of Aylesford 3s. 4d. Rest to Alice my wife and I make her and John Wynter of Morston executors.
Last Will: My feoffees shall permit Alice my wife to have for her life my principal messuage with two other messuages adjacent at Berghstede Leese with gardens adjacent and with one Tyle oste and 5 acres of land adjoining and with six pieces of land containing 12 acres called le Ryes together with 10 acres of land lying at Bradstrete in the parish of Holyngborne, together with a piece of land called Anderhole, three pieces of land at Prideworth in the parish of Berghstede, together with a piece of land called Malage in the said parish containing 3 acres.
If my wife be pregnant with a son then the said son and his heirs to have a messuage situated at Melgate in the said parish with a garden adjacent with a piece of ladn called Joyes with a ……….. containing 4 acres in the parish of Thornham and one piece of land called Rattiscroft and Froppilfeld, Sowthentonnwe, Litill Capill, Grete Mellefeld, together with a piece of meadow lying at Aldyngton Melle Dane containing 2 acres of land, Kennawore, containing 4 acres, a piece of land called Holyland. To him at the age of 20 and his heirs. If it should be a daughter then to John my son.
I wish that John Pokill my son when 22 to have to him and his heirs all my land lying at Stone in the parish of Berghstede with a piece called Nedyndiche, a piece called Goore containing 1½ acres and one acre called Goldyng, with a piece called Ryes lying at Howcourt and North at Wood together with Claypette crofte lying at Holyngborn with a piece called Woulpette lying in Thornham.
I will the said John Pokyll my son to him and his heirs after decease of Alice my wife and mother of the said John, if he shall be 22 years of age, all the messuages I have in Berghstede Leese in the parish of Berghstede with all gardens, one Tyle oste and all the lands &e given to Alice my wife for her life.
I will that Godeleve Pokyll my daughter if she live to the age of 18 years shall have to her marriage a piece of land called Mellefeld or 12 marcs.
I will that Alice Pokyll my wife have to her and her heirs all my lands at Reynham on condition she pay to Johan my daughter, if she live to be 18, £10. If my daughters die within 18 years then the money to the church of Berghstede, noyous ways and other works of charity and a chaplain to celebrate in the said church a year.
If John Pokyll my son die before 22 then the child my wife is with, if a son, to have the lands, but if a daughter then the lands to remain to all my daughters when 18. If they all die then I will that John Pokyll son of William Pokyll and my godson shall have to him and his heirs my principal messuage and two others and gardens and the Tyle oste and the residue of all my land to remain tot he sons and daughters of my brothers viz William Pokill, Thomas Pokyll and Philip Pokyll.
I will all my lands and tenements, pastures &e at Melgate in divers parishes assigned to the boy-child, one piece excepted called Veltye, be sold by my feoffees viz Robert Bertye, William Pepir, Richard Chamber and Robert Godyn and the money disposed by the discretion of my feoffees to the church of Berghstede, noyous ways &e within the said town (villa). I will my feoffees find an obit yearly for euer with the piece of land called Veltye in the parish of Berghstede to the value of 6s. 8d.
I will Alice my wife have the custody, reparation &e of all my messuages and that she shall make no waste nor strip &e.
