JOHN GERYN, 8th
April 1438. (16 Henry VI). To be buried in the church or churchyard of
Saint Botulph without Aldrychgate, London or in the church or churchyard
of the Assumpcion of the Blessed Mary of Esshattyford [Ashford] in Kent.
I leave tot he fabric (fabrice) of the said church of Esshattysford
[Ashford] £10. I leave to the books, vestments or other ornaments of
the same church to be amended by the discretion of John Fogge Esquier,
William Brokman and Thomas Chapman of Wynelsborugh and the vicar and
churchwardens of the fabric of the church there for the time being £10.
Two
priests to celebrate for three years, one where I am buried and the
other in the church of Esshettisford [Ashford] £40.
To the high altar of Saint Botulph of Northflete [Northfleet] in Kent
6s. 8d., to the fabric of the same 20s.
I leave to Johan wife of Thomas Rous of Northflete 40s.
To the reparation of noyous ways at Esshettysford [Ashford] for the way
between the house late Master John Egyndens and the town there 40s., for
the way between the house of Thomas Parys at Bybroke and the town 40s.,
for the way between le Beuersbrigge and the same town 40s., for the way
between le Kekede [or Lekede?] and le Bergh called Berghstrete 20s.
To my servants at the time of my death £6.13. 4.
I leave to the amending of a way between the Cross called Steyham Crosse
in the parish of Wynysbergh and the said town of Esshetysford [Ashford]
40s.
To the friars of Canterbury and Sandwich 20s. To Johan my daughter of
her marriage £100 and my jewells &e.
To the Master and Brethren of the hospital of Saint Bartholomew next
Smythfeld to say "exequias" &e. after my death 20s.
To Johan my wife my messuage at Esshettisford [Ashford] for life and all
goods not bequeathed and £66. 13. 4. in money.
I wish that £10 be spent in reparation and amending of a way between
Webard and the mill of Esshettysford [Ashford].
I leave to the painting of the altar of Saint John in the church of
Esshettysford [Ashford] 40s.
I leave to John Thorneton chaplain within 3s. 4d.
Executors: Johan my wife, Robert Cawode, and Thomas Genendale and I give
Robert Cawode a little chest ‘toussibilem’ in which are £100, in
custody of Thomas Hordford, living at Baynardes castell, London, and
another little chest bound with white iron in which are £100. (Latin)
